2012 Oscar Nominations: 'Bridesmaids' Gets Few Academy Award Nods

Bridesmaids Oscars

We couldn't help but notice that last year's popular laugh-out-loud comedy, "Bridesmaids," wasn't on the list of 2012 Oscar-nominated Best Pictures, which were announced Tuesday morning.

Though it did receive a few nods from the Academy -- actress Melissa McCarthy was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, and star/writer Kristen Wiig and co-writer Annie Mumolo were nominated for Best Original Screenplay -- many experts guessed that the raunchy wedding comedy, which centers around one maid-of-honor's hilarious journey to her best friend's wedding, would have made the list for Best Picture or even Best Actress.

It has already received significant acclaim, snagging an award for Best Comedy from the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, Favorite Comedy Movie from the People's Choice Awards, and nominations for Best Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture at the Golden Globes. What's more, it did astoundingly well in theaters -- rare for a female-focused mainstream comedy -- clocking up more than $288 million at the box office worldwide. It even surpassed 2008's "Sex and the City" as the top-grossing R-rated female comedy of all time.

Historically, Academy voters have been "reluctant to honor movies that provoke belly laughs instead of jerking tears," according to The Daily Beast.

"Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig has his own thoughts on the matter: more stylistic films seem to appeal to the Academy, he says, which is difficult to do when it comes to comedy: "It's hard because most comedy needs to be very relatable," he told MTV before the Golden Globes in January. "If I were to do "Bridesmaids" kind of very stylistic, I think I would alienate the audience."

What do you think -- should "Bridesmaids" have been nominated for Best Picture or Best Actress at the Academy Awards this year?

Absolutely not! There were so many things wrong with that movie including the fact that someone the editors/directors/producers managed to ruin some funny writing and a lot of funny ladies. My assessment- it was a really long-winded, dry and sad movie with a dusting of funny parts. In fact, I was sure we misunderstood the movie's classification and it is really a drama with light comedy. And still it wasn't tied together enough to actually be a drama. I was so confused. There were so many loose stories that never came back to produce a thread that could tie the thing together. We kept thinking "we can't turn it off it's got to get funny soon", and nothing. I can't even talk about the "events" surrounding the engagement b/c besides the dress fitting and the engagement party the rest was a blur. I don't even remember if they made it to Vegas!!! They didn't! Why not? Anyway, I feel bad for the people who wrote the movie and acted in it b/c it had potential. I just can't figure out which upsets me more- the fact that all of that couldn't produce a good movie or that sooooo many people demanded it was award worthy. Ahhh!

Where where all these people who hated Bridesmaids, a few months ago, when the Huffington Post ran a piece.... And I was just about the only one here who hated, Bridesmaids?

Remember ???

I said it before and I will say it again:

Birdesmaids was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I hated it.

Does that sound familiar?

LOL...

It was AWFUL. I can't for the life of me figure out who "acclaimed" it. I very nearly walked out of the theater and demanded my money back. It wasn't nominated for an Oscar because it was sophomoric, insipid and unlikable. That's why. Thanks for asking.

"Bridesmaids" SUCKED. Kristin Wiig and that other girl "Helen" were both characters who were totally unlikeable. The "food poisoning" scene in the bridal salon, which might have been funny if the characters were guys, was HORRIBLE and HUMILIATING. Melissa McCarthy's character was a stupid, comic book stereotype. No reason this movie should be nominated for any awards, except maybe the Razzberry.

Bridesmaids was a terrible movie! The talents of those wonderful female comedians were ill-used and wasted.

Are you kidding me? We Need to Talk About Kevin, Shame, Iron Lady, and Take Shelter were all far superior films also overlooked. And I can name a few more as well.

What the Oscars have become is if a movie is really popular they almost expect it to be nominated. It tells us where our culture is going or rather, where it is.

Remember all the fanboys saying Cameron was snubbed for Avatar and he only lost because they wanted to give it to a woman? Avatar was one of the most formulaic movies since Titanic. Best picture? And then Blind Side actually gets nominated. The movie was basically a Life Time flick. No depth. No levels. Just White savior goodness. And then Bullock actually wins! Actually beats Streep.

I h@te where American culture is now. It was always how the crappy movies made all the money but at least I could see the real talented people get what they deserved at the Oscars. Now we're thinking movies like this is getting snubbed. Jesus.

I work in the industry and we knew once they added a staggering 5 more nominations for best picture, it was to get all these cr@ppy movies in. So the masses can actually watch the award show. Now they might actually win.

Someone is on drugs, and not the good kind.

I liked Bridesmaids a lot, but I'm not kidding myself that it's anything other than a poop joke comedy.

I absolutely loved this film, specially since The Goddess herself Kristen Wiig wrote this screenplay using the good old Syd Field manual (a lesson that should be MANDATORY in any film school).

Oscar worthy? Not really....almost, but not quite.
