Gabrielle Giffords Resignation: Congresswoman Finishing Meet-And-Greet Event

Gabrielle Giffords Resignation

01/23/12 12:56 AM ET   AP

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is finishing the meet-and-greet political event Monday that erupted in a deadly shooting spree a year ago.

The announcement Sunday of her appearance in Tucson comes the same day the democrat revealed she plans to resign her congressional seat.

Giffords' office says the congresswoman will finish the Congress On Your Corner event. In a private gathering, she will meet with some of the people who were at the Jan. 8, 2011 event in a Safeway parking lot when a gunman killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Giffords.

Those attending will include some of the wounded, others who helped them, and people who subdued the attacker.

Also Monday, Giffords will visit a family assistance center that was set up after she was seriously wounded.

Her office says the visit will be her final act as congresswoman in her district.

I greatly admire this lovely courageous, brave and inspirational woman. My hope is that she continues to improve and that she can indeed "be back,"

She has a great guy by her side with lots of friends and support and the best and newest therapies out there. It's not easy and I'm sure she has her down times. Gabby has been added to my HERO list and I send much caring compassion her way.

As someone who lives in her district & voted for her, I'm obviously sad. But I totally understand. I KNOW she'll be back better, faster, stronger (Six Million Dollar Man reference).
We wish her nothing but love.

I, too, am saddened by her decision. But I think she knows what's best for her to get back up to 100%. I do hope and pray that she's not leaving office to spend her [last] days at home. I remember a few other political and business figures that have resigned their position to spend their last final days at home. I pray that this isn't one of them.

This is sad. We need more people like Ms. Giffords in Congress right now. Still I understand and I wish her a speedy recovery.
