Mitt Romney's Reported Rise In Support From Florida's Jewish Voters Appears Fabricated

Mitt Romney Jewish Voters

A report purporting to show potentially historic levels of support from Jewish voters for Mitt Romney in a general election matchup with Barack Obama appears to be either profoundly flawed or simply fabricated.

Last week, the website Miami Political Buzz Examiner published a story stating that the former Massachusetts governor was "a new political star (of David)" in Florida. A "newly released poll" conducted by the Florida Coalition of Independent Jewish Congregations (FCIJC), the article said, showed that 52 percent of the state's "registered Jewish voters would support a Romney-led Republican presidential ticket."

The results, wrote author Jay Schorr, would resemble a "sea change in Florida's political landscape." In late September, the Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling found that President Obama would beat Romney by a margin of 78 to 11 percent among Florida Jews.

While Schorr's piece hadn't spread widely around the Internet, it was picked up in some corners of the Jewish blogosphere. It was also sent to The Huffington Post by one shocked Floridian and one confounded Democratic operative, who worried that it would feed a narrative about the president having trouble garnering support from Jews.

A tiny scratch beneath the surface reveals multiple problems with the story. For starters, it was impossible to find anyone in Florida's Jewish community who has actually heard of the Florida Coalition of Independent Jewish Congregations.

"No. I'm sorry, I have never heard of them," said Carol Brick-Turin, director of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's Jewish Community Relations Council, in a typical response to inquiries about the group.

A search of the IRS database of non-profit organizations turned up nothing on the FCIJC. Nor did a Lexis-Nexis search of records from the past five years or a search of corporate registrations in the state of Florida. A Google search only turned up Schorr's article and links to it.

The Huffington Post reached out to Joe Berkofsky, managing director of communications at The Jewish Federations of North America to see if he knew of the organization. "Sorry," he replied via email, "I have no knowledge of them."

Schorr, who bills himself as a "nationally renowned, award-winning writer, producer and author," has at least one book to his credit ("50 Ways to Look Busy At Work – Even When You're Not"). He responded to a request for comment via email.

"The FCIJ," he explained, "is a private organization comprised of both religious and secular individuals culled from Jewish houses of worship across Florida. While not a PAC, their agenda seems to be quite political. They are backed by some deep pockets and pretty much operate under the radar. I am not surprised they don’t have a website."

As for the polling data, Schorr wrote that the numbers were "conducted for internal use" but had been "leaked" through "the Jewish grapevine down here on condition of anonymity." Schorr acknowledged that he did not know the "statistical methodology" of the poll and wrote that the "margins of error, cross-tabs/contingency tables, etc. were not available for public consumption."

But because his sources for the story were "impeccable," he went with it. "The big mahkhers who conducted this poll wield political influence statewide and have a solid track record of polling on Jewish issues," Schorr wrote.

This statement, naturally, left several other questions unanswered, including regarding why Schorr would run a poll without knowing its methodology and what other work the FCIJC has done. Schorr didn't respond to a request for follow-up. He ended his first email by apologizing for being unable to "be of more assistance."

But the problems with his story don't end there. In the piece, he quoted a "political analyst" named "Bob Allen" without providing any identification or affiliation. There was no immediate evidence that such a person actually existed. Schorr also quoted Jeff Goldenblatt, a 19-year-old sophomore at Florida International University in Miami, as saying of Romney: "I don’t think he’ll change his stance on Israel, unlike what Obama has done."

Lissette Lanza, an official with the Office of Media Relations at Florida International University, told The Huffington Post that her office "could not find a student with the name and age" as reported.

A hat tip is due to HuffPost reader Marsha B. Cohen, who tipped off OfftheBus about this report. If you see campaign news, ads, robocalls or flyers you think The Huffington Post should see, email offthebus@huffingtonpost.com.

Well here is one Jewish publisher who doesn't seem to like Obama very much.

I am hearing rumors (which usually turn out to be true) that Mitt fathered an illegitimate child more than 25 years ago when he was a "Missionary" in France. The secret bank accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands are to cover up payment to the child and mother. We can't know whether or not Mitt actually married the French woman and is now practicing Mormon polygamy. When you have Mitt's money, you can hide alot. It always comes out in the end. Remember...Arnie, Strom, etc.

Mitt Romney if he is the GOP candidate will receive the votes of Jewish Republicans, Jews who blame the economy on Obama entirely, and Jews whose Zionism is so warped that they can't understand that Pres. Obama, altho mistaken in his now-failed middle east policy, is a friend both of Israel and Jewry. Romney might get a marginally higher proportion of Jewish votes than McCain but not much. As for the other Republicans, they could eat bagels all day and publically circumcise themselves they will get only the bedrock GOP Jewish vote.

Could not agree with you more. Happened to recently attend a cocktail party of wealthy NYC Jews - all avid Republicans and staunch supporters of Israel to the exclusion (of what I consider) common sense. Their stand against Obama is simply to blame him for the recession, conveniently avoiding the role that the Bush administration played. Further, they credit Obama with the bailout of Wall Street (et tu Bush, Paulson) and cannot seem to get their minds around the fact that the Republican party graciously accepts their money (and focus on Israel), but would, in a heart beat, abandon both if their right wing religious allies deemed neither essential to the 2nd coming.

Anone who has any concern for their fellow citizens well being (or their own well being if they are not in the 1%) , and does not rely on the smugness of a "personal relationship" with their savior could not, with any smattering of common sense, support or vote for the current republican agenda/candidates.

So the guy was simply lying through his teeth. Doesn't he realize how easy it is to uncover lies in this day and age?

And he may call himself a "nationally renowned, award-winning writer, producer and author", but Amazon has never heard of him - or Powell's Books, for that matter.

It is funny that most US politician believe that all American jews favor fascist Israel as run by Netanyahu. My guess is that most of them want Israel to become the socialist state it once was founded as.

I think that all too many of them are trying to court favor with people like the Adelsons, who are big givers to political campaigns. If the US is dragged into a military conflict with Iran, it will not be a good day for all parties concerned, including Jewish voters in Florida.

Adelson's agenda is to open a casino in Israel and he is doing everything that he can do to convince the rabbinate (ultra-orthodox and orthodox) that his support for Israel as funneled thru Gingrich should be his payback .

This news is old news. But come to think of it, I read about it first on the Toronto Globe and Mail web site. There are some Jews who don't like Obama, more than in 2008. If you did a precinct by precinct check of how people voted in 2008, you'd find that some of the most pro-Republican precincts were overwhelmingly Jewish (ultra Orthodox). Start with Kiryas Joel, NY.

When it comes to hating abortions and gay marriage, the ultra Orthodox and the Evangelicals are 2 peas in a pod.

That Jewish or Christian conservatives hate Obama is one thing, but calling for his assassination in a column is quite another!! Imagine if a Muslim had done the same thing?

Remember, we are not talking about an off-the-cuff comment at a cocktail party after having sippled too many martinis. This man publishes and edits his own newspaper in which he wrote, proofread and published the article. It was a premeditated call for assassination but he got off scott free!

I am not against Jews or against free speech, but the way the US media and justice system have handled this matter exposes a GLARING DOUBLE STANDARD WITH RESPECT TO ISRAEL'S SUPPORTERS.

Sorry if that offends some decent people, but we need to start calling a spade a spade!!

It happens more than you would imagine, and often times the person who makes the despicable comment never makes national HP type news.

Here's one example. Very disturbing, and the guy is still free and rants regularly:

Here's another:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-01-03-obama-effigy-probe_N.htm

Then there were these guys, both still free to continue their hate speech:

At least the editor you refer to was condemned by Jewish and non- Jewish organizations, as he should have been.

Mitt promise to bomb iran. hint hint hint.

we live in interesting times. we claim free press free speech and freedom to a lawyer and a day in court. all have been taken away and most americans dont have a clue what is coming next.

americans love their capitalism as it takes away their rights one at a time while the 1%ers smile all the way to their banks that cannot fail and their foreign banks to avoid taxes.

If the reports of Romney's growing support in Florida's Jewish community have been fabricated, does that mean that Sarah Silverman and Mik Moore don't have to issue another edict for Jewish young people to book flights to Florida to visit their Jewish grandparents and convince them to vote for Obama again? ("The Great Schlep").

I quit following the debate of lies; especially where the media has developed a format where an audience shouts for one side or the other which is similar to a sports event.

Sadly this should be a debate for the highest office in the land and I hope the Obama handlers refuse to debate in such a venue.

I want to hear cold calculated information about the positions where I can fact check. I'm not interested in listening to an audience which reminds me of a football game; that's why we have the super bowl.

The whole Republican series of debates have been shameful and not much better then the debates we have on this site; which are silly and misinformed information ( but it's entertaining though).

I'm not interested in a president to entertain me doing most of his time in office.

Really? Florida Coalition of Independent Jewish Congregations? Don't they know that if they are going to invent Jewish groups, they need to have better acronyms than: FCIJC? How about JCRAP? Jewish Coalition of Retired Activist and Professionals. Anyway, it is obvious that both sides of the isle will do whatever it takes to win the hearts of our Bubbys and Zeidyes!

So profoundly stupid, I almost have to wonder if it wasn't some diabolical political false-flag sabotage from one of Romney's opponents. Which then leads one to ask "Well who among them would be this brilliant *and* this devious?"

Pretty easy answer, wouldn't you say Newt?

Either way, just LoL at the GOP. May they shrivel up and blow away finally....
