Rand Paul Says He Was Detained By TSA, Agency Denies Report

First Posted: 01/23/2012 11:23 am Updated: 01/23/2012 1:01 pm

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Rand Paul's (R-Ky.) staff said Monday morning that the senator was being detained by federal Transportation Security Administration agents in Nashville, Tenn.

Moira Bagley, Paul's communications director, tweeted around 10:00 a.m. ET, "Just got a call from @senrandpaul. He's currently being detained by TSA in Nashville."

On Facebook, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), Rand Paul's father, wrote, "My son Rand is currently being detained by the TSA at the Nashville Airport. I'll share more details as the situation unfolds."

Bagley told CNN that Paul went through a scanner and set off an alarm. He reportedly wanted to go through the scanner again instead of getting a full-body pat-down, but TSA officers refused.

The TSA said that Paul "was not detained at any point."

"The passenger triggered an alarm during routine airport screening and refused to complete the screening process in order to resolve the issue," TSA said in a statement. "Passengers, as in this case, who refuse to comply with security procedures are denied access to the secure gate area. He was escorted out of the screening area by local law enforcement."

TSA spokesman Greg Soule said in a statement, "When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport."

Soule added later that Paul "rebooked on another flight and was rescreened without incident."

Paul and his father are two of the most outspoken libertarians in Congress and are strong critics of the TSA. Paul's father spoke out against the TSA in a statement Monday afternoon.

"The police state in this country is growing out of control," the statement said. "One of the ultimate embodiments of this is the TSA that gropes and grabs our children, our seniors, and our loved ones and neighbors with disabilities. The TSA does all of this while doing nothing to keep us safe."

In June, Paul criticized TSA administrator John Pistole for the agency's procedures being overbearing and unproductive.

"I guess this little girl would be part of the random pat-downs, this little girl from Bowling Green Kentucky, one of my constituents," he said. "They're still quite unhappy with you guys as well myself and a lot of other Americans who think you've gone overboard, you're missing the boat on terrorism because you're doing these invasive searches on six-year old girls. Same week that this happened I got a call from another neighbor of mine in Bowling Green, a little boy had a broken foot and crutches. They didn't want to go through all the screenings, so they took the crutches off and the cast and he wanted to hobble through on his broken foot. His dad was helping him. TSA said 'back away, back away.'"

You don't make the law, Rand Paul, but you need to abide by it. Wait, you do make laws? Then stop your whining!

TSA budget now exceeds $8 billion.  They are expanding VIPR teams - now at $110 million to randomly check trucks on the highway - where chance of success is worse than winning the lottery. Now policing trains, TSA sent 4 agents to the Dubuque Iowa inclined railway - all 296 feet of it - to provide security.  This is a Federal Police force out of control and spending taxpayers dollars to do little to add to the security of our transportation system.  But it is good business for the contractors who supply whole body microwave scanners....
Time to stop. I am willing to risk someone taking a cupcake on board to save $8 billion.

phillip k dick...on the rise!!!

I have here on my desk a volume recently edited and published,"the exegisis of phillip k dick," and books arent published in a vacuum. Never! Book publishing is often a reflection of what is going on in the world, especially for a writer dead so many years. Dick's works, and there are many, show a world gone wrong for the most part. I was unaware of this writer, and introduced to him,and he became one of my favourites. Almost a prophet of sorts of what's wrong with the modern world..that's why he's still read today and is so absorbing. His books all deal with his home country,in the future. The book is titled exegisis..which is a religious word used by scholars...dick was also a person who studied cultures, and his own culture from many standpoints, and to be honest he thought the world of the future would show humanity at its worst..instead of using technology to help people...it would be used to cripple confine and make it a not very free place, with drugs abundant and not much contemplation of any sort around...of course that's not the modern world...his worlds of often drug induced people state frenzy and psychos...but he is a long dead and famous american...another book

RAND PAUL

We have an article and we really dont know what's going on. First of all we should keep in mind mr paul is a member of a movement to restore what they movement sees what was lacking currently in america, and it needed to be restored or the country would enter into a period of demise. Now we dont know what was found just an"irregularity." This kind of business is unacceptable and i'll tell you why? HIs father is a candidate for office,of president,he is a senator, and is representative of a large number of constituents,it is a real problem if he was search for something illegal,or whether it was for the safety of the passengers. For safety ok?
It's not a good idea to search a senator for wrongdoing, for the simple point if he wanted to partake in wrongdoing he wouldnt be doing it going through an airport...it just sounds like pure harrassment. Its reported world wide....does the country much harm. Even if there is a problem of a similar nature in the future...i would ignore it unless on a massive scale...this whole situation may cause all kinds of problems in that state if instigated for the wrong reason...they do not attack mr paul but those he represents...and they know it.

Paul is happy to deny women the right to use their bodies as they wish, but objects to being screened by the TSA?

In what way is he "happy to deny women the right to use their bodies as they wish"?

He's anti-abortion.
01:16 PM on 01/26/2012
Mike, another way to interpret anti-abortion by Paul is that he stands for individuals rights and considers the fetus an individual. It is hard to argue that a Federal government should sponsor or mandate by law someone's ability to freely suspend an individuals right to life - the consequence of abortion. This point, although you may not agree, is consistent with wanting civil liberties for all individuals and to promote a government that takes as little liberty away from citizens as possible. Hence, the use of the TSA has the potential, if not managed, to take away freedoms.

He took action deliberately to get himself detained. I think TSA is a nightmare though, so I'm all for his stunt (but I still recognize that's what it is).

Arrogance to put it simply. This in not an exercise of civil disobedience. He thinks he is above anybody else.
05:41 PM on 01/25/2012
Hardly. He disapproves of their action towards anybody and everybody and about a year prior to this criticized them for patting down a 6-year old. He's for the freedom of all. The fact that happens to entail freedom for himself doesn't make it arrogance.

I think you're wrong about that. He's always been against it. He doesn't think ANY American should have to put with some of what the TSA is doing. I agree.

Don't be such an ideologue. I may not agree on a lot of things with Paul, but if I happen to I'm going to admit it, I don't care what party he's in.

A TSA pat-down is somewhat less invasive of my personal space than being crammed into one of those flying cattle cars next to a sweaty stockbroker who thinks he's entitled to half of my seat in addition to his own... which is pretty much how sweaty stockbrokers think of everything, but I digress.

The key to this was that EVERYONE that sets off a scanner has a mandatory patdown.

Rand obviously thinks he's above any law. If he doesn't like a certain law, perhaps he can work to change it - and OBEY the laws that EVERYONE else has to until then. Dad Ron, then screamed that the TSA is a police state, and he'll abolish it. Who knows how many attempts to down planes have been stopped, and how many perps have had second thoughts because of this rule.

Rand is the same guy whose supporters knocked a woman protestor to the ground, then one stomped on her face (alledgedly he had to stomp on her face because he had a back back)... while Rand just sailed on by, totally unconcerned.

Don't much care for the elitists who think they're totally above the law, while the 99% are beneath.
02:32 PM on 01/24/2012
Yeh we should paint all politicians by the most extreme thing one of the supporters of one of the relatives of the politician did one time. R u reading what you're typing...good god.

Rand and Ron are actually just concerned with the civil liberties we're giving up as part of this so-called "war on terror". Go figure they're a libertarian. One might expect as much, when one sees current laws as unconstitutional. And personally, couldn't possibly agree with them more.

The TSA is out of control, recently we were traveling from DFW to las vegas, on family vacation. The TSA patted down my 3 year old son. What are they thinking! A 3 year old is a terrorist. This country was once about freedom! It was founded on the ability to travel around freely. Not a communist police state.

Some people would use their children( Im not saying you would) to smuggle things onto the plane. So it is fair to check eveyone, young or old to be safe.

Tell me, has that ever happened? No, it hasn't. So we have to give up more of our freedoms, move the line closer to that of a police state, just because of what some random TSA person imagines? Maybe I'll imagine that you're hiding something in your home, better kick the door down and hold a gun to your head while we toss the place, just to be on the safe side. What, you do believe in being safe, don't you? If you don't it must be because you're an enemy of the state.

grow up, will you? Drug dealers have used baby carriages to hold their wares while peddling them on streer tocners, and terrorists have often used children to transport bombs. If I wanted to hijack a plane, I'd conceal my weapons anywhere that might escape scrutiny.

Want to save your kids the discomfort of a search? Make sure they are not carrying that which would set off a metal detector. Even better, don't fly--and leave the seats to the sensible.
