YouTube Video Views Hit 4 Billion Per Day

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - YouTube, Google Inc's video website, is streaming 4 billion online videos every day, a 25 percent increase in the past eight months, according to the company.

The jump in video views comes as Google pushes YouTube beyond the personal computer, with versions of the site that work on smartphones and televisions, and as the company steps up efforts to offer more professional-grade content on the site.

According to the company, roughly 60 hours of video is now uploaded to YouTube every minute, compared with the 48 hours of video uploaded per minute in May.

YouTube, which Google acquired for $1.65 billion in 2006, represents one of Google's key opportunities to generate new sources of revenue outside its traditional Internet search advertising business.

Last week, Google said that its business running graphical "display" ads - many of which are integrated alongside YouTube videos - was generating $5 billion in revenue on an annualized run rate basis.

Still, most of the 4 billion videos that YouTube now streams worldwide every day do not make money. Three billion YouTube videos a week are monetized, according to the company.

YouTube recently redesigned its website to more prominently showcase specialized "channels" organized around different types of content. In October, YouTube announced that it had struck 100 original video programming deals with media partners including Madonna and Jay-Z. Thomson Reuters and YouTube recently announced a partnership to create a Reuters TV channel for the website.

I'm a huge fan of Google but I'm watching for them (along with Apple and Facebook) to sell their workers and customers up the river. It makes me sad, but I suspect it won't be long before they too are financing campaigns, hiring lobbyists, and exerting their own control over our government in their (not our) best interest. It seems inevitable with all these big businesses. I give it 5-10 years before they stop being pioneers and become another cog in the wheel.

Apple is really starting to become the Home Depot mentality of paying people less and less and less. When Apple retail stores first opened up they were paying employees on average of 30 % more than they do today.. this is morally the wrong direction to be heading, but who said big business has morals.

google and you tube were built on the violation of copyright laws

however, once you get as big as they are those violations no longer count cause you can pay people to buy into the big boy's club

if you are single mother uploading a couple songs you'll pay for google's spoils

there is a small group of people in the corporate media industry wanting to hoard all the knowledge and keep you stupid and slaves - so far they are winning

True, religion and corporations see knowledge as a threat but, so far Google is free and so is the knowledge you can access through Google. The way I see it the powers behind our politicians are loosing this battle, and we need to make sure the trend continues.

funny how google, like most US corporations have their HQ offshore, google's HQ is in Ireland where corporate taxes are low, any losses they may find they are allowed to write off in the US - thus paying less than they should.

And just as a reminder Google was developed at Stanford with tax payer dollars

here's a tip - since corporations own your government, if you want it back break it up then share the wealth

Making money through the AdSense program on YouTube is a joke. I must get around 1700 clicks on links put on my music videos in order to make a measly 100 bucks. Most people hate the links and click them away if they like the video so in order to get 1700 clicks on the ad links an enormous amount of viewers have to watch my videos. So YouTube makes money from the advertisements, the advertisers get a bunch of really cheap marketing, and the content provider gets mostly nothing unless really popular. .

Adsense is mostly pay-per-click. So the advertiser only pays if someone clicks. Both you and YouTube only get revenue if someone clicks. I wouldn't say you're getting ripped off. In fact, it's a surprisingly fair model. If anything, the greatest benefit goes to advertiser because if the ad is displayed but not clicked (which means it was seen), they don't pay despite having gained some visibility.

Hollywood is trying to get back our attention after they blew it bigtime before. Good luck with that. The people have the power in what they want to see and hear, and it's mostly not that crap being produced by the powers that be.
