Mitt Romney's Maids' Salary Raises Questions (UPDATE)

WASHINGTON -- For a woman with three houses and sixteen grandkids, Ann Romney doesn't have very much help around the house, according to her 2010 tax return.

IRS forms released Tuesday by Mitt Romney's presidential campaign show that despite reporting income of $21.7 million, the couple paid only $20,603 in taxable wages for household help in 2010. This figure was divided among four women: Rosania Costa ($4,808), Kelli Harrison ($8,667), Susan Moore ($2,238) and Valerie Cravens Anae ($4,890).

According to a number of Boston-based domestic staffing agencies, the salary range for a housekeeper is between $20 and $30 an hour, which adds up to an annual salary of $40,000 to $50,000 based on forty-hour weeks and two weeks of paid vacation a year.

But this number is only for one house, and the Romneys have three houses -- a 2,000 sq. ft. townhouse in Belmont, Mass., a 5,400 sq. ft. lake house on 11 acres in Wolfeboro, N.H., and a beach house in La Jolla, Calif., that is undergoing renovations to double its size.

Even if the Romneys avoided spending time in La Jolla in 2010, they spent plenty of time in New Hampshire, with regular visits in the summer from five sons and their families.

Yet the Romneys still paid only half of the lowest range of an average housekeeper's salary, which raises the question of who cleaned the Romney houses the other 50 percent of the time. A Romney campaign adviser declined to respond to questions from The Huffington Post about the housekeeping salaries.

Wouldn't it be nice to learn that the Romneys split up household cleaning between them on days when the housekeeper was out? After all, Mitt Romney was "unemployed" in 2010, as he infamously reminded a group of voters in Tampa, so he had some extra time. And Mitt even knows how to do laundry, according to a photo tweeted Monday by his son Tagg Romney.

The more worrisome alternative is that the Romneys underpaid their household help.

The Massachusetts Coalition of Domestic Workers holds a meeting on the third Tuesday of every month to work towards passage of a statewide Bill of Rights for domestic workers, but so far their efforts have fallen short.

UPDATE: 5:27 p.m. -- At least one of the four women paid for domestic work by the Romney family in 2010 also worked as chief of staff to the executive director of Mitt Romney's Free and Strong America PAC at the same time.

Kelli Harrison was paid wages of $8,667 by the Romneys for personal assistant-type tasks and errands, said a source with knowledge of the situation. Harrison was the most highly paid of the four women listed as domestic employees of the Romney family, and the other three women did not work for the Romney PAC at all, the source confirmed. Harrison was paid for her PAC work with PAC funds.

The designation of household employees is broad, and can include housekeepers, baby-sitters, personal assistants and other house-related tasks. It's possible that the Romney's hired an outside cleaning service to clean their houses and that managed the payroll, but the campaign declined to elaborate on their arrangement. Given the private nature of jobs like these, most high-profile individuals prefer to maintain their own staffs of people who know them well and who they trust.

Another employee, Valerie Cravens Anae, may be the same woman whose Facebook profile indicates that she attended the Mormon-affiliated Brigham Young University. Anae was paid $4,890 in taxable wages for domestic work at the Romney house in 2010.

The campaign declined to specify whether Harrison was still working for the Romney family personally. The other two women listed as domestic employees, Susan Moore and Rosania Costa, could not be located.

Or maybe the maids live there, and the Romney family provides shelter, food, and transportation. The money earned may be their allowance. IDK. I'm trying come up with a likely scenario of why these women receive such slave like wages.

Or scenario 2: The women use the same tax accountant as Romney and after their magic deductions they have little income. Romney uses that number to avoid paying more in payroll taxes.

This is called TRICKLE DOWN economics. about "Trickle Down" is that you don't have to feed, house or transport your employees, and if they happen to get sick...Oh Well, time to find a new one.

Since when do you pay a slave? How do you think Mitt got so rich? If his Bain record tells us anything, his typical MO is to bankrupt them and sell off their body parts. That's why you can't expect to see very much in labor expenses. Check out his capital gains. He's running for president, for Christ's sake!

It just has an underhanded feel, but it could be that I just don't want Romney to be my president.

Did none of you ever consider that maybe those women don't work full time? You're really quick to vilify the Romneys with your "slave labor" talk, but have any of you ever had an objective thought? Doubt it. I pay a housekeeper these "slave wages" as you call them. She's a US citizen, thrilled with the extra money, and only works for me about 16 hours a MONTH. Her hourly rate is right in line with what all of you are crowing about that Mitt should be paying.
10:54 AM on 09/18/2012
Of course she is thrilled with the extra money because she likely cannot find anyone willing to pay decent wages for her services so she accepts what she can get to provide for her family. When it comes to feeding your family some people are willing to do anything. I just wondered how many times you have encouraged her to go back to school for adequate education so she don't have to work hard manual labor or is her services she provides to you more important than encouraging her to do better for herself. I worked years in housekeeping and not one person even attempted to encourage me to do better for myself.
11:06 AM on 09/18/2012
Actually, we encourage her all the time, and help her with letters of recommendation. She already has improved her own situation. And as for what we pay her, she's happy because it's extra cash in addition to her other job, and we pay her about $30 per hour. Hardly inadequate. My beef is with the OP who called wages like this "slave wages". Not a chance.

We're talking about Mitt Romney here.. that alone speaks for itself. He's the man who loves to pay Chinese workers $1.00/hr.

So Rosario disappeared, huh? She must be undocumented from south of the border, or illegal as they say. I wonder if she is the Hispanix woman seen washing dishes in the background of the Romney PR video at the RNC?

Once again , the Romneys are busted lying to the IRS. You know they had more help than that. Please.

Let's keep digging on this so we can conclude that 1. Mitt and Ann really did split house-cleaning duties (ha ha!) 2. Discover who really did clean their homes, let world see AGAIN how much respect they actually have for workers 3. Expose the viciousness of his character in all its ugliness, by demonstrating yet another way they use people for their personal gain. Keep digging!

I also think that this shows the disregard for those he feels beneath him. He is not striving to boost their income to help make it a better world...but he is trying to save money and get the most for the least. I am sure these people appreciate having the jobs and will not complain but I myself paid 65.00 per hour and up to 90.00 per hour for an occasional housekeeper for one hour. This man will never relate to those who are struggling because if he did ...he would not try to get the most for the least...he would try to uplift those working for him as a good christian or Mormon. Mormans help the poor and do lots of good work for the poor. This, to me is kind of taking advantage of the poor. I don't mean to pile on but his insensativities to others overwhelms me.

While others are paying 40.00 per hour to 65.00 per hour for housekeepers...Romney pays half of the lowest range of an average housekeeper's salary. I, myself have paid 65.00 per hour for a cleaning lady from time to time and yet one of the richest men in the world pays half that amount. According to the Huffington Post...the Romney's paid in taxable wages for household help $20,000 while the average salary range annually adds up to 40,000 to 50,000 per year. It was also found that many had multiple duties at various homes. Now I don't want to accuse him of being cheap but maybe frugal. There were four women involved one made, 4,808, another 8,667,and another 2,238 and 4,890. While being one of the wealthiest in the country and possibly the world...he obviously does not like to share his wealth. I guess he had to do this because as he said he is "unemployed" but things like this make me go Hummmm.

Really? Really?? Really?????? Is this all you libs on Huff Post can get your undies in a bunch about --- Romney's prior year taxes and what he paid his housekeepers? Give me a frickin break, this is pathetic. At least he didn't hire illegals and I don't hear the housekeepers complaining about what they were paid --- I'm sure if they had a problem with it we would have heard it here on this whacky left leaning site first! They were probably paid an above average wage for the hours they worked, but the libs would rather make baseless accusations as the primary campaign strategy. Good luck with that in November!

Ahhh....but he did...he had illegal gardners and when he claimed he found out he fired them. He claims he did not know they were illegal...remember the primaries when this was brought out? For one of the richest men in the world to pay half the regular pay of what housekeepers make nationwide seems unreal. Annual salaries for these people whether or not they are hispanic range from40,000 to 50,000 per year and yet he paid 20,000 in total for 4. $4,808 for one, $8,667 for another, $2.238 another and finally $4,890. Now I don't want to accuse him of being cheap but maybe frugal. Besides, wasn't he unemployed as he said...so I guess that was the reason. The more I hear...the more Idon' t like.

So basically Mitt is either paying them OTB, under the table, however you want to say it - which is illegal.

OR

He is paying them ridiculously low SLAVE LABOR wages which is also illegal.

Yeah...............the Romney camp may want to clear this disaster up asap.

My guess, they'll ignore it and hope it goes away.
