Mitt Romney's Maids' Salary Raises Questions (UPDATE)

WASHINGTON -- For a woman with three houses and sixteen grandkids, Ann Romney doesn't have very much help around the house, according to her 2010 tax return.

IRS forms released Tuesday by Mitt Romney's presidential campaign show that despite reporting income of $21.7 million, the couple paid only $20,603 in taxable wages for household help in 2010. This figure was divided among four women: Rosania Costa ($4,808), Kelli Harrison ($8,667), Susan Moore ($2,238) and Valerie Cravens Anae ($4,890).

According to a number of Boston-based domestic staffing agencies, the salary range for a housekeeper is between $20 and $30 an hour, which adds up to an annual salary of $40,000 to $50,000 based on forty-hour weeks and two weeks of paid vacation a year.

But this number is only for one house, and the Romneys have three houses -- a 2,000 sq. ft. townhouse in Belmont, Mass., a 5,400 sq. ft. lake house on 11 acres in Wolfeboro, N.H., and a beach house in La Jolla, Calif., that is undergoing renovations to double its size.

Even if the Romneys avoided spending time in La Jolla in 2010, they spent plenty of time in New Hampshire, with regular visits in the summer from five sons and their families.

Yet the Romneys still paid only half of the lowest range of an average housekeeper's salary, which raises the question of who cleaned the Romney houses the other 50 percent of the time. A Romney campaign adviser declined to respond to questions from The Huffington Post about the housekeeping salaries.

Wouldn't it be nice to learn that the Romneys split up household cleaning between them on days when the housekeeper was out? After all, Mitt Romney was "unemployed" in 2010, as he infamously reminded a group of voters in Tampa, so he had some extra time. And Mitt even knows how to do laundry, according to a photo tweeted Monday by his son Tagg Romney.

The more worrisome alternative is that the Romneys underpaid their household help.

The Massachusetts Coalition of Domestic Workers holds a meeting on the third Tuesday of every month to work towards passage of a statewide Bill of Rights for domestic workers, but so far their efforts have fallen short.

UPDATE: 5:27 p.m. -- At least one of the four women paid for domestic work by the Romney family in 2010 also worked as chief of staff to the executive director of Mitt Romney's Free and Strong America PAC at the same time.

Kelli Harrison was paid wages of $8,667 by the Romneys for personal assistant-type tasks and errands, said a source with knowledge of the situation. Harrison was the most highly paid of the four women listed as domestic employees of the Romney family, and the other three women did not work for the Romney PAC at all, the source confirmed. Harrison was paid for her PAC work with PAC funds.

The designation of household employees is broad, and can include housekeepers, baby-sitters, personal assistants and other house-related tasks. It's possible that the Romney's hired an outside cleaning service to clean their houses and that managed the payroll, but the campaign declined to elaborate on their arrangement. Given the private nature of jobs like these, most high-profile individuals prefer to maintain their own staffs of people who know them well and who they trust.

Another employee, Valerie Cravens Anae, may be the same woman whose Facebook profile indicates that she attended the Mormon-affiliated Brigham Young University. Anae was paid $4,890 in taxable wages for domestic work at the Romney house in 2010.

The campaign declined to specify whether Harrison was still working for the Romney family personally. The other two women listed as domestic employees, Susan Moore and Rosania Costa, could not be located.

Willard the Android is simply not programmed to relate to such issues as how those who do not make 20 million or so a year survive. For all of his bull***t stories of getting no help from his family to attain the level of success that put him in a position to make 20 mil a year, he is really a product of wealth and political connections. He has made his fortune to a large extent because of the inequity of  Read More...

So basically Mitt is either paying them OTB, under the table, however you want to say it - which is illegal.

OR

He is paying them ridiculously low SLAVE LABOR wages which is also illegal.

Yeah...............the Romney camp may want to clear this disaster up asap.

My guess, they'll ignore it and hope it goes away.

They had to have domestic help to run all those large homes. But likely they just pay "the girls" with old Vogue magazines and bacon grease - oh and maybe a few bucks under the table.

The Romneys saved money by tying their dog (Seamus ?) to the roof of their car. There's no way that they would pay a paid more than they had to.

So Mitt makes Ann, a breast cancer survivor and MS sufferer, clean her own mansions? Am I reading this right?

Or does Mittens just pay everyone under the table to avoid having to shell out for taxes?

The latter.

Romney is caught yet again LYING and being a hypocrite:

Romney clearly admits that day care is more expensive than staying home with your kids but Romney rather SPEND MORE in daycare subsidies In order for women to get a job & learn the dignity of work

Romney clearly implies that if you are on any kind of assistance raising your children isn't work even though poor women don't have the nannies, drivers, maids,& unlimited resources his "working stay at home" wife did.

This matches the narrative the republicans have against single women and single mothers-you should be punished and not get to stay at home with your kids or go to school. The GOP will be little single mothers and deem them lazy. If they want to be stay at home moms they must be married and or rich.

More so, the GOP has the rhetoric & policies to confirm the above.

I wonder if the Romney's had an au pair? I wonder what the Romney's paid the au pair. It would be interesting to see Willard's tax returns during their child rearing years.

The fact is the GOP already lost the female vote. The GOP has a long track record of rhetoric & policies against women. The GOP has outright contempt for single women and single mothers. The GOP has been belittling single mothers for decades- single mothers should be punished and not get to stay at home with their kids, making it harder for single mothers to even go to school. If women want to be stay at home moms they must be married and or rich. Women are not going to vote for a party than ran on creating jobs yet have refused to do anything about creating jobs, simply saying no to everything even infrastructure investment. The GOP for 2 years have introduced record breaking amount of restrictive laws that aim at controlling women’s reproductive rights. The GOP has introduced laws to redefine rape, domestic some states have stopped prosecuting domestic crimes, vaginal ultrasounds in Texas, Arizona and Virginia, waiting periods to get an abortion. All the while the GOP have repealed laws requiring waiting periods to buy a gun. The Ryan plan guts every program imaginable that women with children depend on, e.g., Pell Grants-how will single mothers receive the assistance to go to college and get a job- the very jobs the GOP is constantly demanding lazy single moms to go out and find?
Yes, there will be women that vote for Romney but thankfully the majority of women who truly care about ALL women won’t.

Not surprising. Most rich people are extremely stingy. They even pride themselves in being "thrifty". If you have ever been a waitress, they can attest to how most rich people are extremely bad tippers.

And yet restaurants are allowed to pay less than the minimum wage, expecting the rest and anything over to be made up in tips.

The burning question here, with no apparent answer is, what was the hourly wage Mitt paid to his domestic persons. It isn't the total amount paid that is important but the total wages paid divided by hours worked. I would think Mitt a real standup guy if the wages came out to more than $20 an hour.

There is NO WAY they got away with paying so little. My guess is they've got Mormons girls cleaning their houses for free or they're paying under the table.

You folks are clueless. The Romneys do a ton of work around the house themselves, like most of us do. And, they have a large extended family, and a bunch of them use the vacation house, for example. It's not the Romney's first instinct to hire people to do work they can do for themselves. You all might find that hard to believe, but that's the way it is. How many of you paid maids to care for your homes? The Romney homes aren't much bigger than most of ours. Their main home in MA is just a condo, and it wouldn't take much to care for it. The larger home is the vacation home in NH, and I bet it gets used by a lot of folks other than Mitt and Ann. Mitt washes his own shirts in the sink while on the campaign trail rather than send them out to be laundered, for crying out loud. I'm sure you all can find other reasons to dislike Romney without assuming the worst because he only paid 20k for housekeeping.

If Mitt Romney wants for us to believe that Ann kept up 12 or whatever houses as well as raising several boys - I have some some swamp land I would like to sell you for a low, low price.
