Rand Paul TSA Debacle Prompts Fundraiser From Father Ron Paul

Rand Paul Tsa Ron Paul

Hours after a controversy in which Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) claimed he was held up at a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint in Nashville because of concerns over the screening process, his father, GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul, is seeking to make a little money off a newly emphasized campaign to "end the TSA."

On Monday, Paul set off an alarm while passing through a scanner at a security checkpoint at the Nashville Airport in Tennessee. He then reportedly refused a secondary screening procedure of a full-body pat-down, instead insisting that he be allowed to run through the scanner again. The TSA refused his request, which then led to Paul's removal from the area.

The Huffington Post's Amanda Terkel reports:

The TSA said that Paul "was not detained at any point."

"The passenger triggered an alarm during routine airport screening and refused to complete the screening process in order to resolve the issue," TSA said in a statement. "Passengers, as in this case, who refuse to comply with security procedures are denied access to the secure gate area. He was escorted out of the screening area by local law enforcement."

TSA spokesman Greg Soule said in a statement, "When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport."

Soule added later that Paul "rebooked on another flight and was rescreened without incident."

Both of the Pauls have frequently stood as vocal opponents of the TSA and its increasingly tight security procedures. Now Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), in the middle of a campaign for president, has launched a money-bomb in which he asks for supporters to "help me win this race and fight back for our civil liberties by making your most generous contribution right away."

"The elderly. The disabled. Little kids. All victims of an out-of-control police state that, while doing nothing to make us safer, is working overtime to strip away our freedoms, our rights, and our basic dignity," Paul writes in the release. "As President, I pledge to do everything in my power to strengthen our national security by ending the theatrical sham that is the TSA."

Below, the full text of Paul's release:

Earlier today, the internet was buzzing with the rallying cry "Free Rand Paul!"

And this image was at the top of the Drudge Report:

What happened to set off such a firestorm?

My son, Senator Rand Paul, simply stood up for his right not to be the latest victim of the TSA's disgusting full body pat-down.

I'm writing today to ask for your help in fighting back against the out-of-control TSA, but first, let me tell you what happened.

After an "anomaly" turned up in his body scan as he was trying to board a flight in Nashville, Rand showed that he was clearly no threat and asked to go through the scanner a second time.

Instead of tolerating this common-sense idea, TSA officials demanded he undergo a full body pat-down.

Rand stood up for his rights and refused - and was then detained by the TSA and prevented from getting on his flight.

Though the TSA finally caved after Rand didn't back down for two hours - and allowed him to go through the scanner again - Rand caught a later flight but missed his commitment to speak at the March for Life in Washington, D.C.

As soon as word got out that Rand was being detained, grassroots Americans responded in outrage over this latest abuse of power by the TSA.

Which leads me to a critical point.

Rand was able to speak up for liberty today thanks to the platform he has as a U.S. Senator.

I'm proud of my son's stand, but just imagine those who receive this kind of treatment every day in our nation's airports and can't fight back?

The elderly. The disabled. Little kids.

All victims of an out-of-control police state that, while doing nothing to make us safer, is working overtime to strip away our freedoms, our rights, and our basic dignity.

Thanks to your support, I have a chance to stand up for all those who have been assaulted by the TSA and END these abuses once and for all.

As President, I pledge to do everything in my power to strengthen our national security by ending the theatrical sham that is the TSA.

I know it's short notice, but we've put together a mini-Money Bomb to bring even more attention to this critical issue tonight and tomorrow.

Will you help me win this race and fight back for our civil liberties by making your most generous contribution right away?

You see, not one of my establishment opponents - and certainly not the incumbent, who stands idly by every day while this disgrace operates in our airports - will lift ONE FINGER to stop the TSA, stand up for our Constitution, and preserve passengers' dignity.

I have led on this issue with my Plan to Restore America, which, along with cutting $1 trillion during the first year of my presidency, abolishes the TSA!

My Plan will take the responsibility for security from this reckless bureaucracy and return it to the private property owners who will do everything possible to keep their customers safe.

Whether it's honoring our promises to our veterans, or securing our borders, or ending the policies that keep our troops under the thumb of the UN, not one of my opponents measure up to the standard we need when it comes to this nation's defense.

Sure, they'll talk a good game on the campaign trail, but every one of them ignores the simple truth that national security begins at home.

Let's follow "Free Rand Paul" with another rallying cry - "End the TSA!"

And this election gives us a better chance than ever before to do just that.

Please, give whatever you are able right away to our End the TSA Money Bomb to help us keep the spotlight on this out-of-control organization and restore respect for freedom and common decency to the White House.

For Liberty,

Ron Paul

P.S. Earlier today, my son, Senator Rand Paul, was detained by the TSA in Nashville, prevented from making his flight, and missed his commitment to speak at the March for Life in Washington, D.C.

All because he refused to be the latest victim of the TSA's disgusting full body pat-downs.

I'm proud of my son's stand, but there are many more who receive this kind of treatment every day - and never have a chance to speak out.

My Plan to Restore America stands up for the rights and privacy of every traveler by abolishing the TSA.

Please, make your most generous contribution today to my End the TSA Money Bomb so I can have every possible resource to win this race, abolish the out-of-control TSA, and lead the fight to keep our nation safe - instead of allowing bureaucrats to continue sacrificing our security for this theatrical sham.

TSA budget now exceeds $8 billion.  They are expanding VIPR teams - now at $110 million to randomly check trucks on the highway - where chance of success is worse than winning the lottery. Now policing trains, TSA sent 4 agents to the Dubuque Iowa inclined railway - all 296 feet of it - to provide security.  This is a Federal Police force out of control and spending taxpayers dollars to do little to add to the security of our transportation system.  But it is good business for the contractors who supply whole body microwave scanners....
Time to stop. I am willing to risk someone taking a cupcake on board to save $8 billion.

You'll be happy you weren't violated, right up until the point where the plane you're on hits a building, right?

You people should fly El Al. Once. You'd stop complaining about the TSA.

The cnn pundits could barely talk over them. RP signs dominated. You are in denial...and I have my own insurance; I don't need the government to take care of me.

It's ironic. Rand Paul, the Libertarian and champion of freedon was on his way to the March For Life, where he was scheduled to speak in favor of big-government regulation of women's bodies. I wonder how he'd feel if he were a woman? Equal rights demands that men be subjected to the same government scrutiny. If a group was demanding men be subject to vasectomies if fathering children out of wedlock, my guess is that he'd be against that. I can't imagine any sane woman is going to be in favor of the government controlling their bodies. We are not cattle. We are living thinking human beings and demand we be treated as such. He wants freedom for himself but not women. That's a twisted convoluted attitude and should have a government warning on it...
03:13 PM on 01/26/2012
That's why the bloated federal government won't do it under Paul's plan, it's your neighbors and friends in your state that would regulate a woman's choices in that area. This is called freedom for all not just men... Maybe you should respect a persons opinions if you're not going to take the time to find out about his actual legislative beliefs. Take the time to watch the debate tonight, hopefully his dad gets enough time to speak on these issues for about the 50th time, since no one is capable of looking it up on their own... Constitution baby!!

NO ONE should "regulate a woman's choices" except for each individual (liberty) woman.

Period.

Rand and Ron Paul AND you are hypocrites.

@Gbyestranger --- Part 1 --Don't be condesending to me when you have no idea what I've read or how informed I might be. You know what assume means. Maybe you should take your own advice and respect my opinion based on the facts as I KNOW them. In my volunteer work I saw a 14 yr. old brought in who was beaten badly and raped. She has no parents and her Uncle told her she had to leave because he couldn't deal with it, so she had no place to go. Her eyes were beaten so badly she will need surgery. She's pregnant as a result of this rape. Thank God she doesn't have you to tell her to go read some information.

In my state our Governor is trying to eliminate services to women as I write this. He has singled women's services out to be cut. He's not talking about eliminating services to men. We have corporate sponsers taking over our cities and these Republicans who are in charge by a majority, are certainly not following the Consitution "baby".
07:41 PM on 01/28/2012
Lin96, the article is about TSA. But if you want to make it about abortion ... Paul's position is entirely consistent, he stands for the rights of all individuals. If you consider your child a person, then the stance that the Federal government should not suspend your child's rights to life by law is consistent with protection of that freedom for all.
10:33 AM on 01/26/2012
It is an argument of semantics. In proper Orwellian fashion, the TSA didn't call Rand Paul detainment what it really was.
12:01 PM on 01/26/2012
Of course it was detainment, anyone saying otherwise is an apologist for a naked emporer.

01:43 AM on 01/27/2012
well considering it wouldn't take much for them to just walk across our border unimpeded with whatever weapons they want (thousands of impoverished mexicans pull it off every day) I dont really see the whole point of Hijacking a plane again, there are thousands of much more vulnerable targets. Actually, now that I think about it, the TSA hasnt stopped a single act of terroism yet...

If anything we should secure our vulnerable points. Since the EPA passed that last round of regulations which shut down more coal plants, our power grid barely meets demand. All it would take is a coordinated attack at 3 or 4 plants, to bring down the Northeastern Power grid for a few weeks untill they can repair the damage. Doesnt sound bad? Remember that its midwinter and in the timespan the power is out, millions of homes are without heating, the loss of life would eclipse 9/11.

THAT is what scares me about our government's security priorities. Lets strip search a 6 year old and ignore the complete lack of security at dozens of oceanfront power stations. Seriously, anyone with an 8ft boston whaler has the ability to pull right up to the facility. Its friggin scary. O_O

I don't know if anyone has made comment on this yet or not but on my local news here in TN they just showed video of the TSA detaining Rand Paul at the airport. They made him stay in a secure location where he was seated in a chair using his cellphone and there were security personel all around him to make sure he didn't leave, so if that's not called "detained" then I don't know what is. I saw the video with my own two eyes, so if anyone want's to tell me he wasn't then I know that's false.
06:25 PM on 01/25/2012
So this guy raises extra money because his kid didn't want to obey the laws the rest of us have to? Once again we have an elected official making a statement saying that the rules only apply to the little people right?

Unbelievable.

06:41 AM on 01/26/2012
As a true leader should, he is demonstrating to you that you do not have to submit to a physical molestation. Reasonable humans do not let their children's genitals fondled by strangers. After they were caught molesting children on video, signs are now posted restricting recording devices in the screening area. That only restricts your right to free speech since most people can't imagine that this activity is occurring if they don't see it.

All together what do you think there were last year 10,000, 20,000, 30,000 complaints about the TSA?

Well actually according to the Dept. of Transportation, there were 1,418 consumer complaints against the TSA filed by September 2011 for the current year. Wow that's a big number.

Well let's examine that in context. Being VERY VERY CONSEVATIVE I know that just one terminal at JFK sees about 5000 passengers, a day times 365 days per year, which comes out to some 1.8 million people. Now remember X-File Conspiracy Theorist, that’s 1 airline, in 1 terminal, in 1 airport, 1,800,000. So if we apply the total US complaint number to just that single location it’s 1 complaint in every 900 passengers or 900 to 1.

The real picture? According to a CNN in 2010 report over 1,billion people will fly in the US in 2011. So let’s look at those numbers again 1,000,000,000 applied against 1,418 complaints. Let me see here that’s 705,218 to 1. ONE problem in every 705,218 passengers.

1,418 complaints, that’s less than half the number of poor souls that lost their lives on 9/11…
06:50 PM on 01/25/2012
The TSA hasn't stopped a single terrorist. So 9/11 is irrelevant.

Oh really Franky? Please define "terrorist"... TSA officers have confiscated more than 1,000 guns that were discovered by security personnel as passengers traveled through airport security screenings in 2011. Now unlike Poppa & Baby Paul and X-File Fans like yourself that is a fact from an NBC news story in November of 2011.

So tell me Franky when does one become a terrorist? Is it only after he kills an innocent traveler? Hey I've left a lot of things in my carry-on luggage while traveling but a firearm was never one of them....

I don't know what frightens me more alarmist like the Pauls or the fact that they are developing a following like yourself.

Ron Paul deserves huge credit for educating people about what he has learned. Showing them how their own government has become a giant wasteful debt creation machine for the banks, robbing us of our prosperity and freedoms. It takes a man like Paul who studies history and economics and isn't swayed by lobbyists and Corruption. The nation has not had a leader like Ron Paul in a very long time, and it is about time!
