John McCain Goes Off Message, Predicts 'Major Scandal' Related To Unlimited Political Giving

First Posted: 01/25/2012 12:35 pm Updated: 01/25/2012 1:55 pm

WASHINGTON -- Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was supposed to do a conference call with reporters Wednesday hitting Newt Gingrich on behalf of Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.

Things didn't exactly go as planned.

McCain did talk about the announced topic, how the number of earmarks in Congress increased when Gingrich was House Speaker from 1994 to 1998. But his attacks on Gingrich (R-Ga.) were vague and listless.

"I can't remember any specifics," McCain said at one point.

But when a reporter asked McCain about the increasingly "negative tone" of the Republican primary, that got the "maverick" off in a direction he was interested in going: campaign finance.

"I dislike it, and the fact is that we all decry negative ads and negative tones but it does move voters and as long as it moves voters it's going to happen," McCain said.

"As you know, I think the outside super PACs and others is so disgraceful that I'm ashamed of the United States Supreme Court in their decision on United," McCain said, referring to the 2010 Citizens United decision that allowed corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money in political elections.

The decision by the nation's highest court gutted rules put in place by legislation sponsored by McCain and then-Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) in 2002.

McCain went further.

"I predict to you there will be a major scandal associated with the Supreme Court decision on Citizens versus United. There is too much money washing around," he said.

The problem, as a reporter on the call pointed out, is that McCain and Romney are at odds on the issue of campaign finance.

Romney has decried the role of super PACs, calling them a "disaster." But his issue is not with the unrestricted giving. He has said he remains in favor of placing no limits on campaign expenditures. The only change he has said he would make is to do away with super PACs and let donors give unlimited funds directly to candidates and campaigns.

"We already have unlimited contributions," Romney said last month in an interview with Real Clear Politics. "The question is: Is the campaign going to be responsible for them or is the campaign going to not have control of its own message?"

McCain shrugged off the disagreement, arguing that jobs, the economy and national security are the key issues that voters care about.

He tried to turn the campaign finance discussion in a direction that was aimed at Gingrich, going after Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino magnate who is the largest donor to a super PAC supporting Gingrich.

"I note with some interest that a casino owner has given $5 million and his wife has now given $5 million, so you have one family throwing in $10 million into a primary race. I don't think that's what our Founding Fathers had in mind," McCain said.

And with that, Romney communications director Gail Gitcho promptly ended the call.

"Senator McCain, thank you very much for taking the time today," she said. "I appreciate your comments and we'll talk to everybody tomorrow."

Once upon a time, getting money out of politics was one of the few things that both parties agreed on. McCain was one of the most vocal.

I say this as a liberal who admired him in many ways before the 2008 elections, despite our differences. He actually used to be a "maverick". He got the name because he made decisions based on his own ideals and not marching in lock-step, so he actually did  Read More...

I have to agree with McCain on this, there will be a major catastrophe. There is entirely TOO much money being pumped into the primary alone. This is what a conservative majority on the Supreme Court gets you....even a republican is speaking out against it.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ...this guy cracks me up. I am so glad he represents the glorious state of Arizona. He does....right? I mean I don't know what he has done for this state. Does he ever come to this state? Has anyone seen him lately? He has no idea what the American people are concerned about.

Of course, everyone is ignoring the huge (Republican) elephant in the room, and that is the fact that the SCOTUS is completely corrupt, especially Thomas and Scalia....taking money directly from people with direct input on the cases they are hearing, which is against over 200 years of Supreme Court tradition and any ethical code that has ever existed.

I long for the old days (3 years ago) when McCain seemed like the craziest clown in the car.
08:42 PM on 01/26/2012
Before that, he seemed like a logical person. He was called a "Democrat in disguise" by some of his peers. Now he's just as out there as his fellows. The only problem is, they still consider him a moderate somehow.

I agree. I liked the McCain of 2000. He sold his soul in 2008 and still lost.

I agree with McCain. Too much money is going to cause corruption. My question is why would the couple who own casinos give Gingrich 10 million dollars. Is it because they know that Newt is unstable and unpredictable so he would bomb Iran if that it what is behind it.

I like MdCain too... don't have the same respect for him I used to though. Let me say, I'm a democrat but think McCain is right about campaign finance, and is also right about SCOTUS.

Way far more, and are about as Supreme as....ah, it's just really frustrating these people appointed for life, are able to make the Final decisions on issues that effect us all. Talk about term limits, this is one group that really needs them.

I believe the scandal began when the Supreme Court handed down the decision...it will not get any better until it rescinds the decision or something in Congress or some modification to the Constitution abolishes what was perhaps the worst decision of any Supreme Court in our modern era. Considering the makeup of the Court, let's say, the decision was no surprise....

I agree with Senator McCain 100% about the money involved with the Super PACs -- money is flowing and there doesn't seem to be one bit of accountability. Some of the worst ads are out there by Super PACs and it is obvious the truth means little. I would be more shocked if there is not a scandal. There is way too much money being spent foolishly by Super PACs in the GOP Primary. If some of our candidates had any ethics they would tell the Super PACs to shut it down but then Newt has been kept afloat by a Super PAC and my guess this is where the scandal will eventually come as he doesn't a good job of keeping track of his own campaign finances. If find the whole idea of these Super PACs distateful. If I had my way the limit on individuals would be lifted but candidates would have to account for every penny. If someone donated $5 you need to get the same info as if they donated the max. If you don't have all the data on a donor, then the money needs to go to charity. Get accountability back so everyone knows who gave and how much.

In an interview McCain said this about the Citizens United decision which he said is shameful, "I predict to you there will be a major scandal associated with the Supreme Court decision on Citizens versus United. There is too much money washing around," he said." I am very intrigued about this and guessing he thinks money was exchanged for votes. I'm thinking Scalia, Mr. Framer's Intent because, at least in my mind, Scalia voted to install another right which the Framers never intended. It always seemed like a hypocritical decision but no one ever called him on it and no one ever explained to me how it wasn't a hypocritical decision for him to make. If money was given in exchange for votes I pray it comes out now!

The only way I ever heard super pacs existed was by watching the Comedy Channel. That is sad and comical, if it wasn't so serious.
