Navy SEAL Hostage Rescue Operation: Obama Praises Special Ops

Obama

By LOU KESTEN and KIMBERLY DOZIER   01/25/12 09:14 AM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- "Good job tonight," President Barack Obama told his Defense chief as he arrived for his annual State of the Union message.

Unknown to a global television audience watching the speech moments later, a bold hostage rescue operation had played out half a world away with an elite Navy SEAL team's rescue of two hostages in Somalia, one of them an American. It was the same SEAL unit that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, a U.S. official said Wednesday.

Publicly, Obama did not tip his hand during his speech, though microphones picked up his congratulation to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta as he entered the House chamber Tuesday night. Obama pointed his index finger to Panetta and said, "Good job tonight. Good job." Panetta smiled broadly.

Unknown to those watching the speech, Obama had learned shortly before that the operation to rescue American aid worker Jessica Buchanan and another hostage had been successful. Immediately after the speech, Obama returned to the White House to inform Buchanan's father that she was safe and "on her way home," according to a White House statement.

It was a dramatic bookend to the pomp and ceremony of one of Washington's most elaborate rituals – the State of the Union. The president did not mention the operation during his address to Congress and the nation, though he did refer to another successful military operation – the May 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan by Navy SEAL Team 6.

"One of my proudest possessions is the flag that the SEAL Team took with them on the mission to get bin Laden," Obama said in his speech.

Tuesday's hostage rescue in Somalia was carried out by the same SEAL unit that carried out the bin Laden operation, two U.S. officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the operation. The unit is the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, also known as SEAL Team 6. The members of the unit who carried out the rescue operation were not the same personnel as those who killed bin Laden, the U.S. officials said.

In a predawn White House statement, Obama praised U.S. Special Operations Forces who rescued Buchanan and Dane Poul Hagen Thisted, who had been kidnapped at gunpoint by Somali pirates in October.

"As Commander-in-Chief, I could not be prouder of the troops who carried out this mission, and the dedicated professionals who supported their efforts," Obama said in a statement.

U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the top secret operation, said the SEAL team parachuted into the area and got to the rescue site on foot.

Panetta, in a separate statement, said Buchanan and Hagen Thisted "have been transported to a safe location where we will evaluate their health and make arrangements for them to return home." He said the two hostages were not harmed during the operation, and no U.S. troops were killed or injured.

"This was a team effort and required close coordination, especially between the Department of Defense and our colleagues in the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Panetta said.

On NBC's "Today," Vice President Joe Biden said the U.S. decided to move after determining that Buchanan's health "was beginning to decline."

"We wanted to act," Biden said.

Obama approved the mission Monday. On Tuesday, Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, gave the president half a dozen updates on the movement of forces and the progression of rescue operation.

About two hours before Obama was scheduled to begin delivering his State of the Union address, Brennan told him Buchanan and Thisted were safe and in U.S. hands.

After delivering his address, Obama called Buchanan's father. In his statement Wednesday, Obama said he told John Buchanan "that all Americans have Jessica in our thoughts and prayers, and give thanks that she will soon be reunited with her family."

"The United States will not tolerate the abduction of our people, and will spare no effort to secure the safety of our citizens and to bring their captors to justice," Obama said. "This is yet another message to the world that the United States of America will stand strongly against any threats to our people."

Biden had high praise for the special forces. "It takes your breath away, their capacity and their bravery," he said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "These guys and women are amazing."

So, if I get this right, Obama and his Navy Seals will go to any length to extract US Citizens from any country that may hold hostages? I did not see the Navy Seals go in and extract or liberate those citizens in North Korea! So, we only pick on the small, easy to manipulate countries? This President is a big CHICKEN!!! And LIAR!! He will only do what is Politically good for his election bid. It is so funny to see this all come out at the SOU address, even if it was only a quick statement under his breathe. This was done so that all the news media could ask what it was about. He opened the door. Why not do this say, two days prior or for that matter months ago. Because he knows the average American does not have a memory more that a few days, when it comes to issues like this. Way to go Barry

Listen, I'm not an Obama supporter, but, aside from the fact that I agree with you that this was timed a little conveniently for his campaign, there is a legitimate reason not to send the SEALs into N.Korea.

That would amount to an act of war with DPRNK, and that is not what anyone wants.
The SEALs, especially SEAL team 6 are bad motherf*ckers, but even they couldn't take out an entire advanced military with just 4-8 men.

ok, nice that these two people were rescued but I have to say, I am so SICK of these do-gooders, rock climbers, and hikers, etc, who think they have to go to war-torn, dangerous countries on the other side of the world to do their thing. Then when they get into trouble for their stupidity, our military has to go in to rescue them. There is SO much here in their own country that needs to be done-how about staying here and doing what needs to be done at little or no cost to the American taxpayer or endangering members of our military? I don't care who takes credit for this in Washington with all the back-slapping and rah-rah stuff. These people need to start taking responsibility for their own rash decisions and not keep expecting that the US is going to keep bailing them out when they find themselves in a dangerous situation. They knew what they were getting into when they went into these areas. STAY THE HELL HOME and be a productive citizen in the United States. Lord knows, we have enough porblems here that need to be solved. Why do we have to constantly save the world? Do you see any of these third world countries' leaders stepping up the plate to help their own without a hand-out from the U.S.? Sick of the whole thing.

Exactly, These two were lucky that the SEALs are badass enough to save them!

From the comments posted about this rescue, it's easy to see the deep divisions
among us. I am not well spoken and I am often taken to task by some of the super
duper users on Huff post, but I love this crazy country and most of the people in it.
I am proud of our military men and women and salute them, everyone. How could
anyone consider the seals and other special forces anything less than "HEROES"?

The GOP/TP'ers are the ultimate hyprocrites.
Remember how severely they trashed Jimmy Carter after his failed mission to rescue the Iran hostages. The POTUS takes the heat & deserves credit where credit is due.

Every President would of giving the order. Big deal Seals trained for that. Of course Somalia rejects so well trained and equiped was a hard task. Use them more often there about 6 guys who make the world unsafe.

Like I said yesterday, I bet the republican party wish they had candidates of the quality of a Seal Team 6 group because their candidates are so widespread, they couldn't come together as a team if they super glued each other. This party has no concept of "team work" and camaraderie for the cause, which is for the country as a whole. They are individual combat fighters out for their own selfish ends and certainly don't give a rat's petuit about the people of this country like our Seal Team 6 does. The Seal Team's first priority is country first.

This is what Obama was trying to get across to that group of misfits at the SOTU address. He wants us to come together as one and fight for the cause of the country, not for individual success and profits. The republican party will NEVER even understand this concept because they are so far apart from each other that a wind tunnel could go through that party and never touch two people at the same time.

What a hopeless bunch of selfish misfits these men are and they want to lead this country? NOT ON YOUR LIFE repubs.
08:36 AM on 01/26/2012
You are so far out touch its a shame. The Seal team was trained under Bush. Why did it take 3 months and on the day of a 10 cent speech. Campaign Campaign. Team work they all walk around over paid kissing his a@@like he is a king.

It doesn't matter who the team was trained under so what you're saying is meaningless. My point was the team's commitment to what matters, this country, and not personal wealth and power. You angst is overwhelming and blocking your good sense it seems.

That is just it. WE DO NOT HATE AMERICANS, WE ARE AMERICANS, who do not want the Constitution trashed any more. We are Americans who have work ethics, thats right. We work for a living, not off the backs of fellow Americans. We do not allow illegal immigrants to collect SS or Disability or welfare, as these are programs set forth for American Citizens!!

I am so proud of our President. I feel safe again with him at the helm. He does not kill flies with cannons. He gets it done succinct and deftly. If I as an American ever got lost or captured in a foreign country, I want Obama answering my 3:00AM call.

how come the media, or obama and his staff didn't mention that last Saturday.. over 500,000 Youth and college students rallied to Save Babies Lives for the annual March for Life???
not one mention in obama's state of the union speech about the half million youth that rallied in the capital.
I wonder if he would have mentioned it if the rally would have been a pro abortion and pro obama rally?
I think that the main stream media would have been covering 500,000 youth day and night if they were protesting or supporting a "main stream liberal media goal"
10:41 PM on 01/25/2012
Why should that have been in the SOTUA??
05:22 PM on 01/26/2012
500,000 college students and youth rallying in DC should be a major story on anyones paper.
