President Obama 2012: Young, Black, Bourgeois Voters Need Enticing

State Union Osas Ighodaro

First Posted: 01/25/2012 6:51 pm Updated: 01/26/2012 10:29 am

Harvard Law School graduate Diane Lucas and her friends caught Obama fever during the 2008 presidential campaign. They canvassed and campaigned, knocked on doors and lobbied their colleagues and social networks.

They were an army of young, educated and ambitious men and women who'd mustered every dollar and every minute they could to the cause of getting Barack Obama elected president. And there were thousands of others just like them, doing the same thing.

"He was an underdog and it required all hands on deck," said Lucas. "We knew it was going to be a fight -- that if we didn't go hard and if we didn't tell every single person we knew to vote and tell people to rock the vote and go out and do voter registration and anything else that we could do, this man would have no chance."

Obama was elected on the wings of hope and promises of change. The voices of young and old, white and black from all corners of the country were heard. But there was a special satisfaction for African-Americans like Lucas, who helped usher into office the nation's first black president. That group came out in record numbers. Fifty-five percent of eligible blacks ages 18 to 24 voted on Election Day, and 65 percent of eligible blacks of all ages voted, according to the U.S. Census.

Roughly 96 percent of them voted for Obama.

But over a rough and tumble first term chock-full of congressional standoffs and economic crises, hurt feelings and disappointments, the fever some young black professionals caught four years ago seems to have broken into mild support at best, downright apathy at worst.

"Our generation, young professionals, especially young professionals of color who were a huge part of the force that mobilized the vote and were really active in getting Obama elected in '08, now are pretty much apathetic this election and that doesn't make any sense," said Lucas, 30, now a lawyer in New York City. "It's counter-intuitive for the same people who supported Obama with such zealousness, in 2012 to be like, 'Uh, yeah, I could have had a V8.'

"That is very frustrating and scary," Lucas said.

As the election rolls closer and Republican candidates battle for their party's nomination, Lucas and other young and upwardly mobile Obama die-hards in New York City are fighting to re-energize their peer groups at dinner parties and brunches and froufrou cocktail parties in Harlem and Brooklyn -- the social orbit of fashionable, educated, ambitious young blacks -- where the Obama conversation can be stickiest.

They are diving into their massive Rolodexes and listserves and email lists and bombarding their peers with invitations to speech-watch parties, fundraisers and soirees with celebrity hosts and the hottest DJs. Some are teaming with club promoters and forming hosting committees, delivering opportunities to be politically active on a silver platter for a group with aspirant tastes -- all in the name of re-electing Obama.

"I try to make it so that its fun," said Brian Benjamin, 35, founder of Young Professionals United For Change, a group that organizes young professionals of color around political and civic issues. "It's meaningful, but they know that I'm going to have events at a venue that's hot," he said. "I just don't see why things that are meaningful have to be boring or in a community rec center basement or something."

Lucas said she is reaching out to her peers through online social networking and fundraising. She and three friends recently launched elevensixtwelve.com (11-6-12, the date of the presidential election), a website with a blog that also sells Obama T-shirts, with all profits going to the Obama campaign and the Democratic Party.

"I think the main thing is making it cool again," Lucas said. "When people see that the people that they respect and that they hang out with are supporting Obama in a zealous way, it's like, 'Oh wait, maybe I need to get into it.'"

The black bourgeoisie is a tricky, finicky group to entice politically, said people who oscillate in such circles. Some are contrarians of the "just because he's black doesn't mean I have to vote for him" set. Some are politically tuned in, but turned off by what they see as Obama's political missteps.

"Young black professionals gave a lot of money last time, checks none of them probably ever thought that they would write," said Benjamin, a former investment banker who now works on affordable housing issues. "Now, the hardest difficulty is they are very committed to not getting fired, so as a result they don't, they just don't have the time and or the interest to really dig in. Many of them work as investment bankers or at some law firm, and politics really doesn't matter much to them."

Lawyers and doctors and Wall Street types are worrying about their own financial security. Their time is money and they simply aren't enthusiastic about spending much on a president who they either think will likely beat the Republican nominee or who has lost the razzle-dazzle of 2008's historic run, some in those circles said.

"They live where they live and they're not getting shot at, so they just don't care," Benjamin said. "What we're doing is building that bridge to where they are and where they can have the most impact."

For Benjamin and his group YP4C, that often equates to the "accoutrements" the "cool crowd" have come to expect.

Just last week, Benjamin, who also serves on the president's national finance committee, helped raise thousands of dollars during Obama's Jan. 19 trip to the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Some younger Obama supporters said one factor is a perhaps false sense of confidence. They say the Republican debates are showing a clear picture of what the alternative to Obama could be: Gingrich's talk of poor black kids and the "food stamp president," Romney's rich-boy arrogance, Ron Paul's relationship with a racist newsletter.

"We have to put our weight behind Obama to balance out whatever stereotypes that people have about who we are as a people," said Calcie Cooper, who co-founded the Joint Interest Group, another networking group that has worked to politicize young professionals. "That representation was lacking, and it still is. There are a million and one Barack Obamas that I know. When he came on the scene it was like see, we exist."

On Tuesday night, Benjamin's organization threw a watch party for the president's State of The Union address at a Midtown Manhattan bar. A week or so earlier, he blasted the event to his network of thousands, tapped Osas Ighodaro, Miss Black USA 2010 to host, a couple of high-profile members of the Obama campaign, and built buzz by tweeting, using Facebook and teaming with Loop21, a popular African-American website for news and politics. There were drink specials, a DJ and flat-screen televisions.

Hundreds of people who Benjamin said "do it big" pressed close to the bar and into nearly every corner. A few minutes before Obama's speech, the din of the crowd fell to a low grumble.

Looming a few feet above, in the DJ booth by the door, was Michael Blake, a 28-year-old political star who emerged as a key organizer during Obama's 2008 campaign. Blake was later appointed the White House point man on African-American outreach.

Late last year, he was tapped to join the 2012 campaign team as a deputy director of Operation Vote, the outreach for blacks, Latinos, LGBTQ, Jews, the young and the elderly.

Blake's gaze during the speech seemed as much on the president as on the crowd. After the speech, as the crowd lingered on, he stepped outside into the cool January air.

"This is the epitome of what you're fighting for, to show the world and show society that as young, aspiring, thriving African-Americans, I can be successful, I can contribute, I can break the stereotypes of what people may believe about me and those around me," Blake said. "And if you want to think about how it changes the paradigm and opens up doors and opens up opportunity and has people think about you in ways they never thought about before, you have got to get excited about this.

"These are once-in-a-generation moments that we are going through right now," Blake said. "And the fact that we have an African-American man that is president and an African-American wonderful first lady and two little black girls, it is the epitome of what you are striving for. You need to fight for this and you have to realize that on the other side, you have leaders who want to take everything away. And we can't allow that to happen, if you believe that we as African-American people still have more amazing things to do."

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Osas Ighodaroas as being a former Miss Black America. Ighodaroas is a former Miss Black USA.

I am one Black person that would never vote for Obama again.

I will let him seek votes from the groups he has paid attention to.I refuse to be fooled by what he will now convey in election season because I have been paying attention during the last 3 years to see Blacks were treated like the plague by "The Half White Obama".....

You are probably one vote that he does not need because you seem to think it's all about you. And for you to resort to name calling, it is clear and obvious, you are not one that has standards or a moral compass. Your vote will easily be replaced. And may the person you vote for remember to call your name in his acceptance speech. Sad but glad you are not one of us, but then you never were. You cannot even be bold enough to use your own picture. That says alot.

It's refreshing to hear from those youth who are 'thinkers' rather than those who fall in the category of the majority of people (not just youth), who merely reiterate that which has been cast/dispersed via the mass media outlets. If we are to win the battle for humanity, human life no matter what color, ethnicity, texture hair, social/economic status religion etc., to be respected it requires, 'thinking'people who are tapped into their intellect rather than an emotional response to immediate circumstances. I recall when Obama was running and after he was elected that he said more times than I can remember, 'that what we face ahead of us was a long road; that we would not resolve it over night but together we can achieve what we see for our future (Paraphrase).' And it seems that all that went out the window because everyone is of the "Immediate gratification/Now" generation vibration. People seem less willing to work through situations to cause change. Obama is and has been doing what he promised on most levels. Sure he has turned the corner on some things like the war issue. Though I am not for war, will never be, I am however certain that he has information not privy to us as all Presidents before him have that influences his choices. I voted for him so I Trust him. Thank God for youth like Michael Blake!

The way I see it. If Bush got 8 to F#%@ it up Obama should, can and will get 8 to fix it. And with the GOP's choices being Mitt and Newt????? Really. Not to mention if Ron P. runs as an Ind. But don't become laxed my friends. You still must vote. Remember they are banking on you won't. Don't let up now my friends.. lets stick a fork in these cats. Make sure you have and keep proper Id especially the youngsters. get on them and stay on them about that. They talk about constitutional rights but at the same time try to systematically strip us of ours because they know if we do what we did last time they LOOSE. I wish one of you haters would try to argue that FACT.

I attended the SOTU Address watch event at Chocolat Lounge in Harlem and was thoroughly pleased at the level of consciousness, engagement of insightful conversation and instant connection to how important it is to hold events like this. These meet ups are what permeates the community, generating a groundswell of support for the President and his re-election campaign. In 2008, we were just learning about candidate Obama, byinlarge this still was a large segment of "apprehensive" people of color who arrived at the party very late in terms of showing their support. This time, such procrastination could become problematic. I urge all Obama supporters to galvanize your community, harness the spirit of that landmark victory, and personify the message that the President laid out in his SOTU address:

"Each time I look at that flag, I'm reminded that our destiny is stitched together like those 50 stars and those 13 stripes. No one built this country on their own. This nation is great because we built it together. This nation is great because we worked as a team. This nation is great because we get each other's backs. And if we hold fast to that truth, in this moment of trial, there is no challenge too great; no mission too hard. As long as we are joined in common purpose, as long as we maintain our common resolve, our journey moves forward, and our future is hopeful, and the state of our Union will always be strong."

Obama is the black Bush. Remember he signed the NDAA secretly on New Year's Eve when no one was looking, allowing the indefinite detention of citizens without charge or trial.

Who adores and admires a man who dedicated his book to LUCIFER - Leftist Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama..that's who.

In Saul Alinsky's book "Rule For Radicals"..he wrote in the dedication: “Lest we forget at least an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our legends, mythology, and history (and who is to know where mythology leaves off and history begins — or which is which), the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom — Lucifer"....Wow, and Democrats associate themselves with this person???

In 1969, Hillary Clinton wrote a 92 page thesis on the radical Leftist, Alinsky, who praises Lucifer, Ole Slew Foot, himself..Satan!

Barack Obama also studied and was influenced by the radical left-wing Chicagoan, Alinsky..and applies his philosophy and social tactics.---The man dedicated his book to Satan, people!

Amazing..no wonder the Democrats support abortion and same-sex marriage!

Everyone must remember your first time doing a big job and initially second-guessing yourself. Working with people who don't like you, think they should be in your position or works to sabotage you. Our President had more opposers and less supporters inside the camp, forcing his back against the wall. He had to do what he did to learn who was with him or against and force them out in the open. Now he is prepared to do what must be done because he knows who is with him.
04:49 PM on 01/29/2012
Mam, Obama had a Democratic House and Senate for his first two years -- few Presidents have had it that good. Plus, he's had an adoring fawning media the whole time, (only Democrats enjoy that) Obama has NO excuse (yet all he does is make them and point fingers).

Question: What had Obama EVER fixed, solved, or rebuilt before taking Office? The answer is NOTHING..which helps explain his utter failure as President.

And again, Barack Obama CHOSE to study, admire and pattern himself after a social agitator (as did Hillary Clinton) named, Saul Alinsky, who boldly and unashamedly dedicated his book to LUCIFER. Many Democrats today do the same -- what DOES that say about the underlying philosophy of modern-day Democrats?

Doesn't this go a long way toward explaining why the Democrats support ABORTION and SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, and why they equate the struggles we had in the 50's and 60's with the HOMOSEXUAL agenda of today (we know they're TOTALLY unrelated)?

Barack's "Hope and Change" DOES NOT embody the kind of CHANGES that our Lord would want for our society (or any society that honors Him).

President Obama was handed a broken Nation just as many blacks were handed run down apartment buildings by Slum landlords during white flight in the 60's and 70's., Blacks have always had to walk on water, and perform miracles that's why we love chitlin's and hogmaw's the leftovers that didn't even make it to the table. Yes, President Barack Obama is the magic negro, one among many. Obama-Biden 2012 Change you will believe in.............keep watching.
04:51 AM on 01/29/2012
I'm watching..and the ONLY change I see coming is 4 and 5 dollar gas, more TRILLIONS of debt run up, more FAILED Green Energy ventures (instead of drilling for OIL), more black babies aborted, more Pro-Abort and Same-Sex Marriage Judges on the Supreme Court, more BLACK UNEMPLOYMENT, and HIGHER taxes -- Oh yeah, and more BLAMING GEORGE BUSH for ALL that doesn't go Obama's way!

And make no mistake..Same-Sex Marriage is on the way if he's re-elected -- Saul Alinsky, and Alinsky's hero, LUCIFER..will be very PROUD of Obama..and very GRATEFUL for all the BLACK VOTES that put THEIR MAN back in Office!

the republicans arent even an option anymore, they are just insane at this point and need to be kept out of power at all costs.

The Republicans are the ONLY option if you want jobs, oil, traditional values, a strong military, and the debt reduced.

If you want FAILED Green energy ventures, 4 to 5 dollar gas, more TRILLIONS wasted, a slow economy and anti-business policies, almost half of ALL black pregnancies being aborted, and Same-Sex Marriage -- then Obama is the man and Democrats are your game!

The responsibility of a U.S. Citizen isn't to be cool or have to be enticed. The responsibility of a U.S. citizen is to become informed and register and vote one's conscience.
If you feel disenfranchised you have no one but yourself to blame.
03:13 PM on 01/28/2012
And for some who AREN'T citizens, (the Democratic Party) believes it's their right to go out and vote ILLEGALLY since the Democrats DO NOT want voters to have to produce an I.D. card -- they want the elections ripe for voter fraud (which they KNOW helps elect their candidates).

It's a national tragedy that the only candidates are Obama, Newt and Mitt. That's it. In lieu of a Democrat challenging Obama, we should have a third party candidate.

As it stands now I'm not even sure if I'm going to vote for president.

(Not that it matters but I'm an African American professional woman who did not vote for Obama in 2008)

It was the Democratic Party that allowed the "era of whips, chains, and being separated from your love ones"---they ALSO fought, bled, and died trying to keep that ERA alive!

The Republican Party came into existence to STOP that era of slavery and of denying blacks their humanity -- Democrats and the Leftist media try to LIE and FLIP the TRUTH around or IGNORE it..but FACTS are FACTS!
