'Operation Sweet Leaf' Yields At Least 16 Arrests In Marijuana Bust, 25 Metro-Area House Raids

First Posted: 01/25/2012 4:29 pm Updated: 01/25/2012 4:29 pm

The North Metro Drug Task Force has been leading an investigation into a large-scale marijuana takedown ironically dubbed "Operation Sweet Leaf" that led to at least 16 arrests this morning with more to come.

According to 9News, SWAT teams began raiding 25 metro-area homes at 6 a.m. and have uncovered at least 1,000 plants. Many of the arrests were made in upscale neighborhoods in Denver, Broomfield, Thornton and Westminster, causing about seven children to be taken in by social services.

Interestingly enough, news of the mass arrests comes the same day as Colorado dispensaries and medical marijuana activists are staging a "Medical Marijuana Day of Action" in response to U.S. Attorney John Walsh's first wave of seizure letters to dispensaries within 1,000 feet of schools.

The arrests in this crackdown, which included men and women, did not involve medical marijuana however and are expected to include about 10 more during the next week according to North Metro Drug Task Force Cmdr. Jeffery Peters.

"Evidence gathered during the investigation demonstrates that much of the marijuana grow was being shipped out of state and was not being produced for medical purposes," 17th Judicial District spokeswoman Krista Flannigan told KDVR.

Authorities say that the grow operation is suspected of growing the plants in Colorado and shipping them to as many as eight other states via the U.S. Postal Service.

So far there are a total of 69 charges included in the 16 arrest warrants which include racketeering and conspiracy under the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, Distribution of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana with the Intent to Distribute, Conspiracy to Distribute Marijuana and Money Laundering.

The joint investigation was large enough that it involved the North Metro Drug Task Force, Denver Narcotics Bureau, South Metro Drug Task Force, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the IRS and the U.S. Postal Service.

The money to be made without a great surge in crime when Marijuana is legal to produce and market will far out weigh the tax dollars spent on a small cottage industry created by prohibition.
The only parties making any money at this time are the cartels and law enforcement keeping whatever they seize ( like the Romans when they conquered a people ) .
You cannot control a product by criminalizing it. You control it by regulating it's production and sale. Just like pharmaceuticals, alcohol and tobacco.
Didn't we try prohibiting alcohol? Look at that legacy.

Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped and held captive suffering abuse and rape for 18 years in California. This happened even while neighbors had repeatedly called the police as they knew that her captors were registered sex offenders and thought it was odd that children were on the property. Her captors parole and probation officers had made home visits during this time as well. However if the neighbors had called the police and said there were pot plants in stead of children in the back yard, the completely worthless elements of law enforcement would have likely launched a full scale raid. It is high time that law enforcment be held accountable for solving actual crimes on the books rather than search for their futile, revenue creating, victimless marijuana drug war so called crimes. Enough is enough!!

I wonder how many kids could have been fed, or how many old people helped with the money this required.

So they took 7 kids into social services...over some weed... I get that shipping it via the USPS, across state lines, makes it federal. But why do I care? What I care about is the fact that these 7 kids now have families that have been ripped apart by an unfair prohibition of a naturally occurring plant. And for what? A headline?

This doesn't even scratch the surface of the stuff being shipped thru the postal service, but it does prove one thing....the DEA and the DOJ are coming after Colorado. Take a good look at what happened in Cali guys, it's coming...and with a vengeance.

This is clearly an attempt by the Feds to overshadow the legalization movement by stealing headlines with these busts and actions against legal marijuana dispensaries.

Expect more of this in the coming months leading up to the elections where marijuana legalization is on the ballot. They will try to paint marijuana growers and clubs as being evil and criminal in an attempt to derail the legalization movement.

War in Afghanipakijeckystanstan?

Our govt is a govt of war. Against us, against others.

Funny how the most 'free' country in the world does as much as it possibly can to rule it's citizens in every aspect of their daily lives.

The success of this foray against drugs could lead to less TV watching in the states to which evil Coloradans are exporting.

I am sure the real crooks out there are happy the cops are spending their time and resources on this kind of crap rather than going after them. These people are stealing my tax money chasing after a harmless herb.

Colorado is producing some of the best cannabis on the planet right now. Colorado cannabis just swept the cannabis cup in Holland. Our gray market is killing the black market most of us grew up with, and is forcing it to send their pot elsewhere.

Educate, Legalize, Regulate, Tax.

When you take your package of pot to the Post Office, and the clerk switches the scale to the metric system; they are on to you.
