At 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, Mark Shriver, head of U.S. programs for Save the Children, will address middle and high students across the country in a webinar (streaming above) on poverty in America and the importance of education as a fundamental way to fight the effects of poverty.
Presented as part of the Discovery Education LIVE! webinar series and in support of "Poverty in America Awareness Month," Shriver will help students understand their role in finding solutions and making positive differences in their local communities. Students can submit questions for a Q&A session that will be held following the presentation.
Save the Children is an independent organization that seeks to create lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world. Shriver leads the organization's U.S. programs, which work to break the cycle of poverty and improve the lives of children by ensuring they have the resources they need. Under his leadership, Save the Children's early childhood education, literacy, physical activity and nutrition, and emergency response programs reportedly reached more than 75,000 children in the United States last year.
A former member of the Maryland House of Delegates, Shriver has served on a number of boards and commissions, including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the FEMA National Advisory Commission, the Living Proof Project and the Cal Ripkin, Sr. Foundation.
The Discovery Education LIVE! webinar series brings current issues to classrooms in real-time. Recently featured personalities include Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Ben Rhodes, deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor, among others.
At 2 p.m., environmental education nonprofit EarthEcho will partner with Discovery Education to host a food-focused webinar for middle and high school students featuring Philippe Cousteau, Jr. The webinar will explore the environmental and community impact of daily food choices and include commentary from guest experts Brent Kim -- content developer on Teaching the Food System -- and Ralph Loglisci of Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. Based on the What's On Your Fork? Action Guide, the webinar will give participants a new perspective on issues associated with modern industrial food production and its environmental impacts.
