Raid In Somalia: U.S. Navy SEALs Free Hostages Held Since October

By ABDI GULED, KIMBERLY DOZIER and KATHARINE HOURELD   01/25/12 04:01 PM ET   AP

MOGADISHU, Somalia -- U.S. Navy SEALs parachuted into Somalia under cover of darkness early Wednesday and crept up to an outdoor camp where an American woman and Danish man were being held hostage. Soon, nine kidnappers were dead and both hostages were freed.

President Barack Obama authorized the mission by SEAL Team 6 two days earlier, deploying the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden last year. Minutes after the president gave his State of the Union address to Congress he was on the phone with the American's father to tell him his daughter was safe.

The Danish Refugee Council confirmed the two aid workers, American Jessica Buchanan and Poul Hagen Thisted, a Dane, were "on their way to be reunited with their families."

Buchanan, 32, and Thisted, 60, were working with a de-mining unit of the Danish Refugee Council when gunmen kidnapped the two in October.

The raiders came in quickly, catching the guards as they were sleeping after having chewed the narcotic leaf qat for much of the evening, a self-described pirate who gave his name as Bile Hussein told The Associated Press by phone. Hussein said he was not present at the site but had spoken with other kidnappers who were, and that they told him nine kidnappers had been killed in the raid and three were "taken away."

The hostage rescue was carried out by the same SEAL unit, SEAL Team 6, behind the operation in Pakistan last May that killed bin Laden, two U.S. officials said on condition of anonymity to discuss the operation.

One official said that the team parachuted into the area before moving on foot to the target. The raid happened near the Somali town of Adado.

New intelligence emerged last week that Buchanan's health was deteriorating rapidly, so Obama directed his security team to develop a rescue plan, according to a senior administration official who was not authorized to speak publicly. A Danish Refugee Council official, Mary Ann Olsen, said that Buchanan was "not that ill" but needed medicine.

"As Commander-in-Chief, I could not be prouder of the troops who carried out this mission, and the dedicated professionals who supported their efforts," Obama said in a statement released by the White House. "The United States will not tolerate the abduction of our people, and will spare no effort to secure the safety of our citizens and to bring their captors to justice."

A Western official said the rescuers and the freed hostages flew by helicopter to a U.S. military base called Camp Lemonnier in the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information had not been released publicly. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta visited Camp Lemonnier just over a month ago. A key U.S. ally in this region, Djibouti has the only U.S. base in sub-Saharan Africa. It hosts the military's Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.

The timing of the raid may have been made more urgent by Buchanan's medical condition. The Danish Refugee Council had been trying to work with Somali elders to win the hostages' freedom but had found little success.

"One of the hostages has a disease that was very serious and that had to be solved," Danish Foreign Minister Villy Soevndal told Denmark's TV2 channel. Soevndal did not provide any more details. Soevndal congratulated the Americans for the raid.

The Danish Refugee Council said both freed hostages are unharmed "and at a safe location." The group said in a separate statement that the two "are on their way to be reunited with their families."

Olsen informed Thisted's family of the successful military operation and said "they were very happy and incredibly relieved that it is over." Olsen said the two freed hostages were in Djibouti and would soon be moved to a "safe haven." She said Buchanan does not need to be hospitalized.

"One of the first things Poul and Jessica were able to do was to call their families and say they were freed," Olsen said. "They will be reunited with their families as quickly as possible," Olsen said.

The head of the Danish Refugee Council, Andreas Kamm, said he would have preferred to see the two hostages freed peacefully after working with Somali groups to win the pair's freedom, "but we're happy with the outcome. This is a day of joy indeed."

The two aid workers appear to have been kidnapped by criminals and not by Somalia's al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabab. As large ships at sea have increased their defenses against pirate attacks, gangs have looked for other money making opportunities like land-based kidnappings.

The Danish Refugee Council had earlier enlisted traditional Somali elders and members of civil society to seek the release of the two hostages.

"We are really happy with the successful release of the innocents kidnapped by evildoers," said Mohamud Sahal, an elder in Galkayo town, by phone. "They were guests who were treated brutally. That was against Islam and our culture ... These men have spoiled our good customs and culture, so Somalis should fight back."

Buchanan lived in neighboring Kenya before Somalia, and worked at a school in Nairobi called the Rosslyn Academy from 2007-09, said Rob Beyer, the dean of students. He described the American as quick to laugh and adventurous.

"There have been tears on and around the campus today," Beyer said. "She was well-loved by all her students."

Buchanan graduated in 2006 from Valley Forge Christian College, a small suburban Philadelphia school. The school's president, the Rev. Don Meyer, said Buchanan taught at Rosslyn as part of her studies and "fell in love with Africa."

"Ever since Jessica was captured, we all as a community have been praying for her safety and for her safe release," Meyer said. "We are also grateful that our prayers have been answered."

Buchanan and Thisted were seized in October from the portion of Galkayo town under the control of a government-allied clan militia. The aid agency has said that Somalis held demonstrations demanding the pair's quick release.

Their Somali colleague was detained by police on suspicion of being involved in their kidnapping.

The two hostages were working in northern Somalia for the Danish Demining Group, whose experts have been clearing mines and unexploded ordnance in conflict zones in Africa and the Middle East.

Several hostages are still being held in Somalia, including a British tourist, two Spanish doctors seized from neighboring Kenya, and an American journalist kidnapped on Saturday.

I commend the rescue but i also realize that the war mongering going on that Obama has NOT stopped is still creating a lot of suffering and creating militants and terrorists... Its funny he can sign draconian laws that put our own people as enemy's of the state when convenient and be whisked away to black sites and then rescue others....

The Key Word to this story is "TEAM". It was a TEAM effort from the lowest to the highest level. Our Commander In Chief/President made his decision based on his TEAMs In-put. Thank You Seal TEAM 6 for ensuring the Somali's gave their lives for their country. God Bless America and our American TEAM of Professionals serving our Country. Hoooahhhhh!!!

It seems in the opinion of some of the right wing hacks in this discussion that the only way you have a right to criticize or comment on military matters is if you have served. If many of these people have their way you would not even get the right to vote unless you served or serve in the military. Yet they attack Russia and China for having a militaristic society and having a privleged military class. Can't have it both ways folks. Either we are a civilain nation where the military serves our needs and takes directions from civilain leadership or we are a military dictatorship. I far prefer the former over the latter.

We must stick together as a nation or risk collaps as did so many other great nations that have come before us. Great job Mr. President/ Comander in Chief, and to the US Navey Seals.

Sort of like Osama Bin Laden being taken care of just days before the Patriot Act was up for extension? Funny how timing is used to sway public opinion isn't it?

Yes, Or were you suggesting that Obama did NOT want the new, shiny, improved, expanded Patriot Act to pass? After all, it fits right in with his belief that the President has the authority to imprison or kill any person (including citizens, I'm afraid) he designates. Oh, I mean, "...designates as terrorists." What he accuses them of doesn't really matter, because he doesn't have to show any evidence or explain his reasons, just has to say that they are and that's it, no hearing, no defense, no appeal.

Meanwhile, I am glad the Seal team was successful and had no casualties. They won't always be so lucky. I have no problem with soldiers or sailors killing the people they are told to kill. That's their duty and their job. But I think more Americans need to realize that it's not impossible for them to be told to kill you/me/us because you are in or near a group of people the President or one of his employees said were terrorists.

Hey Fontaine4US, I bet it pains you so that President Obama has repeatedly shown the courage to "pull the trigger" and make the call to go forward with dangerous missions such as these that could ruin his presidency. Had the mission failed I seriously doubt you'd say that the blame lies on those who planned the mission; you like all the other tunnel visioned extremist, would place the blame on President Obama's lap. You people can't give this man credit for anything can you?! It is for those reasons, those myopic close-minded folks like you who will guarantee that President Obama gets a second term! I for one congratulate ALL involved, including the Commander-in-Chief, the person who makes the "Go, No Go" call!

This president knows you dont have to bomb and destroy a whole country and their people to save hostages. If this had been dubya, chaney would have already started a war with somalia.

Different and more mature "commander-in-chief!" Bravo to our military and president obama!

The ones responsible for the initial thought, vision, planning and preparation for this operation are the champions. The Navy SEAL team who did such a superb job with the rescue is the hero in this operation. These people combined deserve all of the credit.

I think it is safe to say that most, if not all, important operations such as this is not a grandiose suggestion or idea of one man who was elected as President of the USA.

Somewhere down the chain of command, there is one who originated the thought, consulted others in the chain of command and from there the idea sprouted into something that would work. Thus, the President is presented with great advice from some very intelligent people with a practical understanding of a major problem.

The President only has to sign the approval. Was he, all by himself, responsible…hardly! I suppose you could say the only responsibility he had was to make sure the pen had sufficient ink to complete his signature. However, due to his title, the President can boast that this was his operation as Commander in Chief.
12:59 PM on 01/27/2012
My god...why is it so difficult to give this president a bravo or a pat on the back!?!?!

Yeah, it was our navy seals--I come from a long line of military and absolutely loyal to our young men and women, wearing uniforms--but it was our commander-in-chief that decided to use our navy seals.

The proof of a real man is giving credit where credit is due. Not holding back because of political, religious, or cultural differences.

Dubya and chaney would have declared war, killing thousands of innocents to make themselves look brave and manly. Thank God that we have a common sense, mature president in power! May he stay in power!

Actually he was responsible in the most important way. As the ranking commander, in this case of all of our armed forces. And in this case the order to send this team in at risk of their lives was his responsibility and his call. As it is for anyone who commands troops. I am pretty sure he knew that as such he alone was responsible for the teams lives and the lives of the hostages. Just as any officer and NCO knows that he or she is responsible for the lives of their troops. If all goes well hooah. If not there is left the sad task of tell parents, children, spouses and friends that someone died in the service of the country and at that persons command.

What is clear here and in other operations that the lives of the military personnel are taken seriously and that comitting them is the result of sound and hard deliberation and planning.

What's up with these Europeans? If they've waited for the UN to do anything, Buchanan would've been dead by the time any action is even considered.

I was in Pakistan/India 4 about 3 yrs (AF spouse). I'll answer why from my time there & in other places. The scope is bigger than u realize. Our enemies see our people speaking against our Might/Power as a weakness 2 exploit & given the opportunity, they'll use it 2 kill u (soft target). Locals ALWAYS said 2 things. "U r a hyper-power" & "Can u get me a visa?" They're threatened by us so they want 2 become us.The "Troops" you've offered a "bravo" 2 haven't ever been "bullies on a playground". I've met 1 person who is pro-war (he was Palestinian)& I've met many of various nationality who wear a uniform. We aren't pro-war & use force as a last resort. When necessary, force is used w/ skill & with consideration 4 non-combatants. Supporting the military shouldn't be affected by who is the current CINC. They are warriors/protectors of freedom, not politicians. Which way the political pendulum swings should not affect perception toward them, ever. Recall when Pres. Obama promised 2 end OEF & close GITMO? I'm glad he opted 2 put our nations interests above public opinion & his own promises. Guess who else put our nat'l interests above public opinion & took the hits of his ceaseless critics? President GW Bush. Obama is a Bush 43 ditto in Foreign Policy & his followers fall over themselves rationalizing that truth away. A clue 2 those who think our changes in leadership change foreign policy...they don't.
04:12 PM on 01/27/2012
now, now, let's play nice,
how bout we send our POTUS over there, bow to their leaders,
and may be next time they will not take American hostage ???
ya , right , and pigs will fly.

bow down to them is not the way to go, send in the military. they understand that...

We're witnessing a bit of a revolution in warfare -- when Bush held office, the traditional military way was significant deployment of bombers, armies, and the navy -- and of course our men and women.

Pres. Obama seems to be embracing the smaller, rapid global strike force and the drones. Seems to be working out well. Congratulations to ALLCON on the the successful operation.

It the same military that was evolving under Bush. We have evolved into a much better military. Two plus wars and 10 plus years of fighting have sharp'in the tip of our sword. If anyone gets credit are all the leadership in the last ten years training, equiping and leading our guys overseas.

I will give you riddle....why did we fail so spectacularly under Carter? Hint: the previous 8 years of gutting our military and the left hate'in our guts (including Cater et al). Guess what going to happen this year? Hint look at the lead story on the front page today: the Army and Marine Corps are going to start the long draw down. If Obama et al have their way, a President in the future will have to endure what Carter did.

As for Revolution In Military Affair (RMA), we been trying to do that for the last 60 years and I have seen personally 3 different RMA since I joined in 1987. RMA is a fantasy that smart people try to implement when they don't want to PAY for a large standing Army. It as simple as that. Technology is only an enabler not a replacement, we learned that again in OEF/OIF and GWOT.

Well, these ideas have been kicking around for a while. Ths is the type of military we will probably need for the kinds of conflicts we are likely to have in the future. Unfortunately, this is what Rumsfield tried to do in a situation where he needed not only an old-fashioned conventional army but a much bigger one than he had. Special Operations Forces kidnapping people in the middle of the night and drone missile strikes aren't sufficient to impose our chosen government on a country the size of Iraq, much less Iran.

Our great war fighting president Obama sends a message to terrorists: "we'll get you."

Bin Laden
Gadaffi
Somali pirates

GOP Bush allowed bin Laden to escape at Tora Bora and ended the bin Laden task force! But Obama got him.

GOP Bush took terrorist mastermind Gadaffi off the terrorist list! But Obama got him.

GOP Bush made the Somali pirate problem worse and bred a new generation of anti-American jihadists. Obama got them.

Correction:

bin Ladin escaped but Bush hardly allowed it. An Afghan warlord helped bin Ladin to escape into Pakistan, a few miles away. Two week of bombing hardly was letting bin Ladin escape.

Bush took Gadaffi off the terrorist list because Gadaffi agreed to quit pursuing nukes.Obama is trying the same with Iran. I hope Obama succeeds but I doubt it.

It was HW Bush who sent forces to Somalia for famine relief leading to the Black Hawk incident. Is this what made the pirate problem worse? The article isn't clear why the Somalia problem was Bush's fault other than Ethiopia but admits others were also at fault. A large part stems from the Somali civil war,

Obama hasn't ended the pirate problem. The lessening of pirate activity is due to the naval presence by several nations, routes further off the coast, and anti-boarding technology. Obama is right to take a hard line. Remember Seal also rescued a ship captain in 09.

Obama invaded Libya, violating of the Constitution by not getting Congressional permission, an impeachable offense. The best of intentions is no excuse.

Should we blame Obama for problems in Egypt, Sudan, Bahrain, or Syria? That'd hardly be fair.

How about the Mexican drug civil war with this administration supplying cartels arms and money? There's been Project Gunrunner, Operation Fast & Furious, and money laundering programs due to the failures of Holder and Obama leading to the deaths of American.

bin Ladin did escape at Tora Bora but Bush hardly let him do so. Bush took Gadaffi off the terrorist list because Gadaffi agreed to give up the pursuit of nuclear weapons. Perhaps he shouldn't have but that's debatable.

It was George H. W. Bush who sent US forces to Somalia in 92 to help in a famine relief campaign leading to the Battle of Mogadishu of 93 and the Black Hawk down incident. Is this what you mean by Bush making the pirate problem worse? The article you reference doesn't give a clear reason as to why the Somalia problem was Bush's fault but it does admit that while it finds fault with Bush, probably correctly, others were also at fault. That should include the UN. A large part of the problem stemmed from the Somali civil war which began in 91.

Obama invaded Libya in complete violation of the US Constitution; not getting any semblance of permission or agreement from Congress, thus committing an impeachable offense. The best of intentions is no excuse to violate the Constitution.

Now should we blame obama for the new problems in Egypt, the breakup of the Sudan, the killing of demonstrators in Syria,

the escallation of the drug CIVIL WAR in Mexico with the obama administration supplying arms and money top cartels and the murders of American citizens?.

If Bush et al had not been so hot to invade Iraq they just might have devoted the needed resources to get OBL when he was in Tora Bora.

But they did not. Far to few troops. To little in the way of Big Guns. Very little air support.

AStan and OBL was an afterthought with Bush. OBL was in fact based on the Presidents own words not all that important.

Iraq-----that was the big prize. At least for Bush.

Bush was a really bad war President. Truly a very bad one.
