Rick Santorum: Homosexuality 'Not Healthy' For Society

Rick Santorum Homosexuality

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/25/2012 12:28 pm Updated: 01/25/2012 12:34 pm

Rick Santorum took a swipe at the gay community on Tuesday, proving that the multiple glitter-bomb attacks he received this week have done nothing to change his hard-line stance against gay rights.

According to the Palm Beach Post, he told a woman who asked why her gay son doesn't have the same rights as a heterosexual, that certain rights are reserved for people who perform activities that are "healthy for society."

"There are certain things that government does that gives people privileges in order to promote activity that are healthy for society and are best for society," Santorum said. "And those things we promote would give people advantages or benefits, government benefits because we think that is healthy activity. Mothers and fathers coming together, forming healthy marriages, having children and raising those children. Every American child has the right, and the government should support the right to have and know their mother and father and be raised by their mother and father."

Still, he admitted that, "everybody in America should have the same rights," a sentiment he has made before despite beliefs that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

His comments came at a campaign stop at the Community Christian Academy in Stuart, Florida. At the same event, the GOP candidate also called President Barack Obama "King George III reincarnated."

Santorum has taken heat for his attacks against gay rights. He has said that gay sex is not "equal" to heterosexual sex and warned that gay marriage would make the country "fail." Meghan McCain recently criticized his opinions as "dated" and "gross."

Gay people unhealthy for society? William Shakespeare was bisexual. Oscar Wilde was gay. Hans Christian Anderson, gay. Ian Mckellen. Gay. Neil Patrick Harris. Gay. and thats just to name a few, just off the top of my head. Many scientists are gay, men who fight for your country, doctors, etc. What's really unhealthy is being prejudice, being hateful, and imposing your outdated views on a country that is not represented by one religion. That isn't realistic. Why stop at gays because your religion is against it? What about the muslims, buddhists, sikhs, Atheists? What about those who commit adultary? How about everyone who works on a sunday because i hear in the 10 commandments thats against God as well? Have a nice, bigoted, prejudiced, ignorant life, Rick. And remember, don't let your kids watch X men, or lord of the rings. Or read Romeo and Juliet. Or watch the little mermaid (Hans Christian Anderson wrote it you see) Because obviously its unhealthy, Y' Know.

Go Meghan! She's precisely right, it's disgusting what some of these politicians are saying now. Being gay doesn't physically or mentally harm harm ANYONE. I'm pansexual and my entire family is still alive, straight, and healthy. The "downfall of America" will be people like this.

Rick Santorum has a young daughter who is gravely ill from birth defects and he preaches about family values all the time. Yet he constantly has to be called home from his quixotic political campaign when she has a health crisis. Why isn't he there with her? That's what any good parent, gay or straight, would be doing --- putting his family ahead of his political agenda.

Not healthy for society is someone seeking a position of authority who advocates bringing home dead fetuses for their children to ogle. Sick.

Note to Santorum:
Gays make up an estimated 10% of our population. They should have equal rights with the other 90% of our population. Keep your private, radical R.C. views to yourself and focus on the fact that as president, your duty is to represent ALL Americans, not just the ones that fit your skewed, narrow view of what we should be like. Your failure to leave off pontificating on gays is in itself pretty sick and bad for society and defies the secular government the Founding Fathers envisioned. What's next for us if you continue this vicious rant? Burning gays at the stake?

The unbelievable thing about the fRighteous is that they would have you live under their theocracy --- in the way THEY believe. But they don't see that living under the Constitution allows them to live the theocracy they would like to live while allowing everyone else (God believer, atheists, agnostics) to live as they would live to

So let's get right down to it.  Santorum has spoken of no other thing
nearly as much as he has homosexuality.  I find that curious and wholly
unjustifiable in a country where 1% of the people own 87% of the
wealth, where just 3 years ago 30 million people were without health
insurance of any kind, where trillions of dollars in savings, ERAs,
401s, etc., have been ripped off from Americans, where credit card
companies could gouge you overnight from an 8% rate to a 32%
rate just because you missed the first payment in 4 years by 2-3
days.

I find it curious when then door in his campaign that squeaks the
loudest is not about health, not about jobs, not about democracy,
not about the Constitution, not about America, not about the
plight of the free world, but about homosexuals.

Me thinks thou dost protesteth too loud, girl.

People don't choose to be gay. But Rick Santorum did choose to hide behind religion to be a bigoted fool. What's not healthy for our society is people who think they can use a bogus interpretation of religion to deny people rights.

What's bogus about our society is that and worse.
How often these people like to remind us that our paper
money screams out, "In God We Trust"..........

overlooking the fact that it doesn't say

"In Religion We Trust."

Santorum need to take his bible -- one of 52 of the King James
very that exists, alone -- and stick it where it doesn't get in the
way of government.

Ours is a government based first and foremost (after Freedom)
on the separation of church and state.

Our Founding Fathers were rejecting a King who used the BIBLE to lord DIVINITY over others. Why would they want to recreate a situation where a future President could just as easily use the Bible to do the same. These people can't make their Bible meld with the Constitution and that's precisely the way our Founding Fathers planned it.

The Constitution trumps the Bible.  Anyone like Santorum who
doesn't understand or appreciate that should quit their campaign
to replace the Constitution with a theocracy -- or move to some
country where theocracy is the rule of the day (steal an apple,
lop off your hand; look at another woman, pluck out your eye).

The great beauty of American government is the GRAY that
exists between the black and white of bibles, korans and all
the rest of these would-be words of god/mohammed/buda, etc.

You may live those words without having to convert anyone
else to them and without having to convert the Constitution
that allows

EACH

HIS
OWN
WAY

And these clowns aren't even consistent in their policy stances. To be Biblically correct, we should deny adulterers, people who aren't virgins, or divorcees the right to marry, too. santorum would never do that because too many people LIKE HIM fit those categories. If he's afraid of gay people just say so. but don't wrap that fear up in a selective interpretation of the Bible and us it as an excuse to deny people their Constitutional rights.

My friends Pat and Terry, have been in a relationship for 31 years. They are raising 2 children. Have survived cancer and a near fatal car accident. They own a home and pay taxes. They go to PTA meetings and volunteer at the food bank.

3 questions for you...

1) Are they married or not?
2) Are they a man and a woman, 2 men, or 2 women?
3) How does any of this effect you?

I'm a Christian, and I think gay people should have their rights for the simple fact that America is a "free" country. Though I don't support gay marriage, but it's not my duty to judge what they do.

In high school my best friend turned gay. Sometimes, I could not talk to him about God because he held God responsible for all the hatred and oppression he had to face. We would have profoundly moving discussions, and then something would happen to send him back into the pain and rebellion. I think more gays (not all) would admit gayness is a sexual sin if they weren't fighting against this man-made homophobia. Too many Christians and non-Christians credit God with this hatred and confusion.

God doesn't hate, people do. If an individual is gay, and with the latest research showing that in many cases, it is biological, then it must be part of God's plan. I am a Christian, and love being so. I believe that if an individual is gay, then it is part of God's work and so I do not question, nor ask why they are the way they are. I just look at them as another of God's children.

You know what's unhealthy for society Rick? The culture of hate that forced gay people to hide underground and seek endless one-night hookups at truck stops and bars while politicians like YOU refused to educate the public on how AIDS was spread. Today, lesbian and gay youth are able to talk to older role models and socialize in clubs, coffeehouses and social networks. This promotes healthy living, both physically and spiritually. If YOU ACTUALLY CARED about the health of these kids, you wouldn't be closing off the most important foundation of life-long monogamous relationships: MARRIAGE. Shame on you Rick, shame on you.
