Super Bowl Chowder Showdown: New England vs. Manhattan

First Posted: 01/26/2012 9:21 am Updated: 08/31/2012 10:48 am

The epic rivalry between Boston and New York will come to a head at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and New York Giants. This rivalry between the two cities has actually existed since the American Revolution. But sports has further intensified the battle -- the greatest sports rivalry is considered to be the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. But when it comes to food, we know the battle will always be between New England and Manhattan clam chowder.

On one side there's New England clam chowder, which has a base of salt pork and cream, and includes onions and potatoes. Get the New England Clam Chowder recipe.

On the other side there's Manhattan clam chowder, which has a brothy tomato base and includes potatoes and vegetables.

We'll have to wait until the big game on February 5 to find out which city's team wins. But here at Kitchen Daily, we're having our own showdown, between New England clam chowder and Manhattan clam chowder. Which chowder will win? Vote below!

Quick Poll

I have always favored Manhatten but when I throw all sensibilty to the wind, she-crab soup is my very first choice. Divine and, literally, to die for (or because of....).

I'm a Giants fan but Manhattan clam chowder is awful. That's ok though, the Giants don't play in Manhattan anyway!!

Manhatten is so much better than New England. New England Clam Chowder looks like something that comes out of my boyfirends manhood.

Why would anybody in his right mind want tomatoes in clam chowder?
03:33 PM on 02/04/2012
(I sometimes wonder if I'm in my right mind) but as to your question re tomatoes & clams - they enhance one another
03:55 PM on 02/04/2012
The question was purely rhetorical. However, since the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, does that mean that only left handed people are in their right minds?

I'm going to have to experiment with this at home. I've never had a good Manhattan Clam Chowder, but I bet I can make one that would taste good.

cool. Just back off the amount of dried oregano in most recipes. You can always add more but you can't take it out once you put it in. If you substitute calamari for clams it's good. Or try adding some nice cod 5 minutes before serving. Also try cooking potatoes in bacon fat. Use waxy potatoes and dice them fine. ok cooking lesson over haha

There is a third choice, more closely related to New England style. It's called Clear Broth Clam Chowder. As you can understand, it's made without the milk or cream resulting in a mostly clear broth. The recipe is on WWW.Yankee.com, along with the better known and more widespread other two styles. It seeems to be most often found in Eastern CT, through RI, amd slightly up into MA.
Our Family version is seasoned mostly with Celery Salt, and contains diced or chopped Celery.

I have heard it referred to as RI Clam Chowder

There is a third choice, local to eastern CT and RI, and that is "Clear Broth Clam Chowder". It is most simular to New England style, but without the milk or cream, resulting in a mostly clear liquid
broth. The version we make uses celery salt as flavoring. It only seems to be enjoyed from East of New Haven CT to Providence RI. But there IS another choice.

As a life long resident of good ol' Boston it has to be New England clam chowda. It may be too rich for some but during these cold winter months it sure do hit the spot. Chowda, ayuh.

Well...finally someone who knows how to spell chowda. F&F

I used to live near La La land many years ago.I loved the seafood chowder that Sizzler steak restaurants had.I was probably the only one eating it.:(They stopped making it before I moved back east.I asked the cute waitress for the recipe, she said it was a mix and no one knew what was in it.It did have various fish in it along with some lobster and crab / veggies.I've tried to find a recipe like it online and need to look for one again. It did have a lot of milk in the soup, probably half and half etc.

Both are delicious but I eat Manhattan ten times more often.
New England is a heart attack in a bowl. Way to rich to eat very often.

While I love both New England Clam Chowder and Manhatten Clam Chowder, I must give a shout-out to my husband's Seafood Chowder, which exceeds even these two staples of the West Coast. His seafood chowder has shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels and a host of yummy veggies.......It is a sensuous delight just to smell it! Adore my Herb's Chowder!!!!

Because nothing says staples of the West Coast like New England and Manhattan chowders.
