Chris Christie Links Civil Rights To Gay Marriage Vote, Draws Sharp Criticism

Chris Christie Gay Marriage

WASHINGTON -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), already under fire for saying he would veto a gay marriage bill and prefers a referendum on the issue, is drawing sharp criticism from black leaders for saying that people would have been happy to have a referendum on civil rights.

"The fact of the matter is, I think people would have been happy to have a referendum on civil rights rather than fighting and dying in the streets in the South," he said Tuesday at a news conference after a town hall meeting in Bridgewater, N.J., according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D), who supports gay marriage, criticized the comment. "I shudder to think what would have happened if the civil rights gains, heroically established by courageous lawmakers in the 1960s, were instead conveniently left up to popular votes in our 50 states," he said, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) said the governor needed a "history lesson."

Unlike in the gay marriage case, many African-Americans were still disenfranchised in the 1950's and 60's and couldn't have voted on a civil-rights referendum.

Christie clarified his comment Wednesday. "My point is, they're trying to say the only way to deal with a civil rights issue is through legislation, and my point is that in a state like this, the fact of the matter is their own polling belies that position," he said. A recent Quinnipiac poll showed that 52 percent of New Jersey voters favor gay marriage.

High-profile gay marriage ballot initiatives failed in Maine in 2009 and California in 2008 after polls showed they had a decent chance of passing. Maine gay rights activists said Thursday that they had enough signatures to proceed with a second ballot initiative.

Six states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriages. New Jersey allows same-sex couples to enter into civil unions, although some same-sex couples in civil unions have said that the law doesn't provide adequate protections.

UPDATE: Christie apologized for his comments Tuesday. "But listen what I will say as long as we're on this topic is I also recognize that my job, one of my jobs as Governor, is to clearly communicate to people what I'm thinking, every time I open my mouth. And I try to be very good about being very direct about what I say so that there's no ambiguity but obviously when I was talking last week at the town hall meeting about the civil rights movement in the South, I wasn't clear enough. I just wasn't," he said. "And what I did was, by saying those things, I left them open to misinterpretation and obviously there are some folks out there whose feelings I hurt or sensibilities I offended. And I apologize for that, because that's my job. My job is to clearly communicate all the time. And so to those folks out there who were somehow offended or concerned about the ambiguity in my statement, I apologize for that because very clearly what I was trying to say, I said yesterday at the press conference about 5 or 6 times."

I simply cannot equate the gay rights movement to civil rights. Civil rights affected an entire race of people who were persucuted because they were black which started with slavery.

I readily admit that in some cases gays have been killed, beaten and abused. However compred to civil rights this has been done on a much smaller scale and during the civil rights movement and before it was pretty much legal to lynch and hang a black man for for police to sic their dogs on a black man for no reason then stand back and laugh about it. During the civil rights it was common place for business owners to post signs saying NO COLORED ALLOWED and to give them second class citizen service even when they took their money. It was legal and normal for the Government at this time to treat black people as if they were inferior, to include the military services. I wonder how many black men earned the Congressional Medal of Honor who never got it because they were black, lots I would bet. All of this was human rights violations which America has NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR. Congress pass something NOW to APOLOGIZE once and for all. If I had grown up black and heard all of these horror stories I would probably hate whites too.

No, I cannot compare the gay rights movement to the civill rights movement, purely in terms of scope or suffering

It is amazing to me that all that has occurred in this country, the likes of Christy can't get past what involves black people. Whenever they want to affix blame they point directly to a black reference. This is the symptom of the illness that plague America.

He is an ugly, mean, hateful person. He is a bully, and very disrespectful to people who do not agree with his views. This who the GOP loves so much their darling.

Why do we have a constitution that ensures basic human rights if everything should be left to a referendum? I believe that everyone should have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, no matter their race, religion or sexual orientation. Religious beliefs should not trump that notion.

Gay rights leaders and Liberals in general have been ry to tie together Civil rights and Gay rights. Mr Christe may have errored in his statement...but it is getting difficult to keep the issues clear of each other. A vote on gay marriage may be the answer...

A referendum might be preferable to dying in the streets, but if you don't have the right to vote, then what good is a referendum?

In the same vein, Florida 2000....

This guy is a clown. I wonder if he would make the same statement about the Bush tax cuts? Of course not. He just doesn't want to take the criticism from either side, depending in if he vetoed it or not.

Hey Tony, he is the Bush's right hand man..they tried to get him to run for President, but he couldn't. He actually thought that Jersey need's him....OMG1 big idiot... Now he thinks that if Romney get elected for the presidental run he will be the VP....This is the deal if Mic wins then he would get to be VP, but this is the catch... this would be the in for the Bush's to come in the back door and run the country from the back door....

How about requiring that everybody who runs for office is at least Smarter Than A Fifth-grader? Some of our public officials are so dumb that they couldn't pass a basic citizens test to get a green card if they hadn't been lucky enough to be BORN in the USA. Rick Perry, who couldn't remember the three agency's he said he'd cut if elected president, also urged all who were 21 by November 12 to vote for him, never seeming to realize that 18 year olds have been voting in this country for YEARS now and that the election is on November 6th. (i.e. the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November) With ignorance like that he might just be worthy of another Jeff Foxworthy description: He might just be a REDNECK.

christie did the gays a favor with this although i doubt he meant to do it. he put it into the proper perspective, the majority deciding what the minority is allowed.

Whereas lawmakers did pass laws to advance civil rights in the 60's, as noted above, it must be remembered that it was the courts who pushed the lawmakers to action.

I appreciate your commentary Mr. Schmoe. "using a passing grade on a current Civics test as a barometer would prevent millions of blacks from seeking an elected office."

However, I am not one of those people who would like to rewrite history to wipe out the stain that slavery has left on this country. History repeats its self when we do not learn from the past. Millions of blacks have already been prevented from seeking office. Heck many people with common sense has already been prevented from seeking office. Without the dollars, you can't get elected. My point is... if you got the dollars at least don't be stupid. The rest of the world is looking at Republican Party candidates spout the ignorance of our own laws, foreign policy and hate rhetoric. How long before they start investing in our elections for president to get someone favorable for them?
