Darrell Issa: Eric Holder Should Apologize To Mexico For 'Fast And Furious,' 'Blood On Their Hands'

First Posted: 01/26/2012 1:01 pm Updated: 01/26/2012 1:15 pm

Rep. Darrell Issa (R- Calif.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, says that the Department of Justice has "blood on their hands" following the controversial "Fast and Furious" gunrunning operation. Some of that blood is from Mexican victims, which Issa says is grounds for Attorney General Eric Holder to apologize to families south of the border.

"Yes, he should find a way to make it very clear to our neighbors to the south -- at least to the government and at least publicly -- that there needs to be deep regret for what happened and there needs to be assurances that it can never happen again," Issa told the Daily Caller in an interview. "We can't bring these people back to life, but at least the kind of condolence that eventually came to Mrs. Terry is a minimum that people south of the border are demanding -- and they have a right to."

(Video of the interview above, via the Daily Caller)

"Fast and Furious", which was in operation from 2009 to 2011, was intended to track the illegal arms trade from the United States to Mexican drug cartels. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives used a "gunwalking" sting tactic -- allowing lower-level smugglers to bring weapons across the border into Mexico in the hopes of following them to more significant targets among the cartels. In many cases, however, they ended up losing track of a large number of firearms. Brian Terry, a Border Patrol agent, was killed in 2010 by one of the guns lost in the controversial operation.

House Republicans have been highly critical of Holder throughout an investigation of "Fast and Furious," which was launched in the wake of reports that hundreds of guns tracked as part of the program had gone missing and had later been used in a number of murders. Some have maintained that there is an intricate coverup continuing to take place in the Justice Department, and that Holder should be impeached or resign if the matter isn't straightened out sufficiently.

Holder and others in the FBI have denied that any evidence has been hidden from investigators.

Patrick Cunningham, chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona, was subpoenaed last week in the probe, but later pleaded the Fifth to avoid providing testimony. Issa has since demanded that Holder provide a new witness in the case.

On Wednesday, "Fast and Furious" brought its first successful convictions, as Jacob Wayne Chambers and Jacob Anthony Montelongo each pleaded guilty in federal court to buying guns that were destined to be smuggled into Mexico.

You want to know what goes on in Arizona about gun trafficking? You want to know why Darrell Issa is running a sham hearing just to hassle the Department of Justice? Read the truth in "El Narco." The author, Ioan Grillo, spent ten years investigating the drug cartels.

The truth is that Arizona is a big WalMart for gun sellers and buyers. There is little regulation, so you have thousands of straw buyers purchasing guns for the cartels, and the Mexican immigration agents don't put in place enough safeguards to keep them from crossing the border.

The gun surveillance program, Fast and Furious, started during the Bush administration. Sadly, one of our agents was killed, but until we make gun shows illegal or subject to stricter control, the potential for
American guns killing American border patrol agents remains a deadly possibility.

I agree, let's investigate the North American Union and publish the findings.

The nerve bring Holder before Congress to testify on made-up nonsence. If I were Holder, I would check all those on the committee for any wrong doings they may have done. He has the tools to do so, make them pay for their made-up accusations.

This past Friday night, congressional officials received a ‘document dump’ from the Department of Justice concerning Operation Fast and Furious. Contained in the cache of documents was a copy of an email confirming that US Attorney General Eric Holder was notified of the death of US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, on the same day as the tragedy occurred.

Read the book, "El Narco," if you really want to know why there is a plethora of guns crossing the border. Hint, it involves big money for gun sellers in Arizona.

It seems to me from everything I've read, that AG holder only loosely knew about the operation, however there isn't any evidence that proves he knew the ATF would bungle the operation so miserably, or that they would do it completely without the cooperation of the Mexican government. This seems like a case of another far-right republican going out of his way to sully the Obama administration, no matter how hypocritical it makes him look.
04:57 AM on 01/29/2012
Oh brother.. It sounds like all you've been reading is Liberal news.
Liberal Lamestream media protects this BO administration at all costs. Of course they would mostly publish articles of Holder's lies.
There is 100% pure proof evidence that Holder knew what was going on.
To add on top of the already damaging evidence which he has stonewalled on, just Friday night there was another document dump, and emails shown that just 24 hours after Agent Brian Terry died from these F&F guns, holder was notified. He didn't just learn about the operation and that thousands of arms were LET walk just some weeks before his first congressional hearing back in July which he again lied about when he knew.

Fine, If you want to believe in fantasy land, that holder knew very little of this, 2 YEAR long felony stupid operation, then he is completely inept and incompetent to be the AG to just know NOTHING about it, given how long it went on and huge it is. Really, put your political views aside and look further into the morals of being a human being to see everything about this scandal is disgrace. This should not be a Rep or Dem issue, it is a right from wrong issue.
12:43 AM on 01/30/2012
apparently there was a doc dump friday evening (http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/conscience-conservative/2012/jan/29/eric-holder-knew-fast-furious-killing-months-leadi/.) included in that dump were emails indicating holder was advised of the border patrol agents death within hours of its occurence--and he was also informed shortly thereafter that "fast & furious" weapon[s] was/were involved:.

"On December 14, 2010, a BORTAC..was shot. .... Shots were exchanged resulting in the agent being shot. At this time, the agent is being transported to an area where he can be air lifted to an emergency medical center,†the email read.

Another email sent an hour later, read: “Our agent has passed away.â€

Burke then forwarded those two email to Eric Holder’s then-deputy chief of staff, Monty Wilkinson, adding that the shooting was “not good,†due to the fact that it had happened “18 miles w/in†the United States border.

Wilkinson responded with, ““I’ve alerted the AG [Holder], the Acting DAG, Lisa, etc.â€

“The guns found in the desert near the murdered BP officer connect back to the investigation we were going to talk about – they were AK-47s purchased at a Phoenix gun store,†Burke wrote to Wilkinson in an email.

These emails [if the report of the dump is accurate] DIRECTLY contradict ALL of holder's testimony before congress.

Now....altho i dont have a link at hand...IF holder lied to congress, what should his fate be?

A force of troops from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland invaded Iraq and toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein who had WMD Hussein was internationally known for his use of chemical weapons in the 1980s against Iranian and Kurdish civilians during and after the Iran–Iraq War. It is also known that in the 1980s he pursued an extensive biological weapons program and a nuclear weapons program, though no nuclear bomb was built. And President Clinton also thought Hussein had WMD. Saddam Hussein's Iraqi army killed 5,000 Kurds in a 1988 chemical weapons attack on Halabja near the end of a bloody, eight-year war with Iran. The statement that Saddam was responsible for gassing the Kurds — his own people — was straightforward. Indeed, Bush has used similar language about the disaster at Halabja in making a case for a military strike to oust Saddam SO what does this have to do with Eric Holder and the F&F gun Scandal?

Issa, your post=uring is embarrassing and path=etic...

You go first...

President Bush should apologize to Iraq, for the invasion, willfull kil=ing over 100,000 of their people, destroying families, destroying cities and destroying their Country.

And then apologize to America for lying to the people, Congress, Allies and the World, as to the reason to inv=ade Iraq and the thre=at of you are either with us or against us... Then apologize to the Families of over 4000 American soldiers he willfu=lly killed and the thousand he mai=med as well as the de=aths of go=d knows how many allies.

And then apologize to the soldiers who have served in Afghanistan for a decade that this war could have been concluded within months of inva=sion if I hadn't taken the forc=es out to fight my own personal war in Iraq.

Iraq was never a threat to the US and never gave refuge to Al Qaeda. The Bush administration eventually admitted that. But it was too late for an "oops" to help either Iraq or the American public by then.

The GOP defended the Reagan Administration's conduct of the covert Contra War against the Government and People of Nicaragua. That war caused the deaths of 45,000 people in Nicaragua. I fully expect Darrell Issa to demand that Elliot Abrams and Oliver North and the other surviving members of the Reagan Administration responsible apologize to the families of all the people in NIcaragua who were murdered by the Contras. There needs to be deep regret for what happened, and there needs to be assurances that it will never happen again. They have a right to such an apology. Right, Mr. Issa?

Translation: Reagan was bad, so it is OK for Obama's ATF to be complicit in the arming of Mexican cartels that lead directly to the murder of 150 Mexican citizens and (at least) one US Border Patrol agent.

OK....
11:28 AM on 01/27/2012
Translation: Neither Darrell Issa, nor anyone else in the GOP really cares about Mexican lives, nor do they nor did they care about the 45,000 Nicaraguan lives that were snuffed out by their unconstitutional privatization and outsourcing of Reagan's obligations to conduct the foreign policy of the country and in compliance with the laws passed by Congress forbidding aid to the Contras. So please don't pretend that you actually give a hoot about the lives of 150 Mexican citizens. Your anti immigrant hate speech daily proves you clearly do not care about the lives of Mexican, or any other country's, citizens.

It speaks volumes that no Democrats have called for either the pursuit of justice, or the dismissal of Eric "My People" Holder, over this bizarre and murderous plot to run guns. But, unfortunately, it is not a real shocker as liberals do not have a real scale between right and wrong and have zero concern for either rule of law, or who or what they damage in the pursuit of their leftist agenda.

I will need more facts than a rightwinger's rhetoric regarding this issue. Seeing that there are a LOT of FauxBots here wailing about F and F, and considering the lack of credibility on that side, I'll wait until I've learned the facts.

So far, every time one of you come with some story, it glosses over the truth to make it look worse than it actually is, and if you look closely, you'll find it traces right back to the Bush Administration.

We'll see how this one plays out.

Issa might have done a li'l insider trading himself so of course he's going to praise the one man who can expose him in all his ugliness. Not that it would result in Rightwingers changing their minds (partly because they'd lost it long ago), but Independents are watching, too, and the GOP is already in dire straits as it is.
