wltx.com:

"When students aren't allowed to drop out they do better, so tonight I am proposing that every student stays in high school until they graduate or they turn 18," said Obama during his State of the Union Address.

But South Carolina's leader, Gov. Nikki Haley, doesn't completely agree, she said that's a task that's easier said than done.

The President is wrong. The best thing that ever happened to me was dropping out of school-- which resulted in going to work, getting a GED and eventually graduating college. When I left school, I feel like my life began. Some kids do not thrive in the school environment and need alternatives-- not to be forced to stick it out when it's not working. It should not be a mandate about keeping kids in public schools that are already failing them for another 2 years. That's oversimplifying the problem. The issue should be to give kids better options to put them on the right track-- work/apprenticeship; GED; trade schools; community college; etc... kids need to be treated as individuals; responsibility should be stressed and they should be given alternatives to explore. It's not going to help kids to prolong their misery for another 2 or 3 years in a method that has not worked for them... then leave them out on their own.

But if everyone had to finish HS, who would take all the crummy minimum wage jobs the republicans want to make, instead of decent living wage jobs?

What's sad is that education has become the piñata in our politics.

"What we want to be able to do in our states is work on vocational programs, work on GED programs, work on technical school programs all of those things are what we want to do and we need the flexibility to be able to do that," she said."

And none of those options include dropping out do they. Those are alternative graduation and learning options which had nothing to do with the Obama's point. Way to miss the point Gov.

[Haley said the success of South Carolina children isn't just about the graduation rate, but about giving them options if school isn't for them.]

Haley's way is an incentive for failure and a lifetime of welfare and food stamps...I believe too many kids with an abundance of potential drop out of school at 16 simply because they can...It's also an incentive NOT to apply themselves and live up to their potential...

Prolonging what's not working for 2 more years is not going to give these kids any better options for their future. In fact, if school is that bad of an experience, if it is crushing their self esteem and destroying their motivation, they'd be better off filtered into an apprenticeship, alternative education or trade schools. I dropped out of school and I feel like my life began at that age, it was the most soul-liberating thing that ever happened to me and the first time in my life I felt happy. I ended up graduating college-- a BA, with honors. The problem is not that kids drop out; the problem is that public schools don't work for everyone, but don't offer drop-outs alternative routes to success.

This is America, a country filled with hard working Americans, who will not back down just because something is hard to do.
If it was easy it likely would have already been done.
Was it easy for her to get through college, or did she work at it, nat happy with just getting a D?
Was it easy for her to get elected, or did she have to work hard getting the truth out in front of the voters?
Were those things worth doing right, or should she have never even tried because it was hard?
America, where we work hard, and play hard, and do not back down from doing what is right.

His plan may not be the most effective way to increase graduation rates or to encourage kids who want to quit to give it another shot but her argument is completely irrational. Give them the flexibility to do what exactly? Let them ruin their lives when they don't know enough about themselves or the world to make a good decision about their future?

Our dropout rate along with the fact that 20% of the children in this country live in poverty is a national disgrace. A lot of kids fall through the cracks. Maybe if we did much better job in early childhood with both the child and parents. Both my mother and sister were teachers and they felt that if the class sizes were small in the early years there could be some intervention. Income inquality has a great deal to do with this. Easier said than done.

Midget thinking.
New Hampshire is already doing basically this.
Hence their eye popping low drop out rate.
Was Ms. Haley's backing Romney another example of her reality checks?

Barbie has no clue as to what it takes to be a real Governor, but she is trying her best to drive S.C. into the ground. She wants to out poverty Texas. Which starts with her All Children Left Behind policies.

A truly outstanding idea.
No one benefits from allowing kids to drop out.
I say this quite aware of the struggle that this can require.
My disabled son took until he was twenty to finish HS.
He's glad he did-so is his employer!

Yeah it was a death struggle at times but once he graduated his self esteem headed up to levels previously unimaginable levels. Didn't hurt mine either.
Now he's working and starting his own business!
Thanks.

That's comical statement coming from the right.  People that vote Republican aren't capable of independent thought, they are afraid of thinking for themselves.

Stay in school where the lunches are free...When will WE face the fact that these drop outs come from dysfunctional families...WHEN? They know it but use it as political fodder!
