Sarah Palin On Alaska Airlines Prayer Cards Being Discontinued: 'I Really Hope This Is Just A Rumor'

Sarah Palin

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has turned her attention to an issue fusing together food, religion, travel and her home state.

Palin spoke out on Thursday against Alaska Airlines' decision to stop including prayer cards with its meal trays. The airline announced the move a day earlier, ending the tradition that lasted for 30 years.

"Some customers were comforted by the cards and some didn't feel religion was appropriate on the plane and preferred not to receive one," Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Bobbie Egan told the Associated Press.

Palin was one of those comforted customers, voicing her frustration to millions of Facebook followers. In a note entitled "Alaska Airlines' Prayer Cards; It's hip to be offended?", the former Alaska governor expressed her distaste toward the move.

"It feels so odd that some may be offended by a little card with an encouraging non-denominational verse from the Psalms, but how often do we hear complaints about tawdry ads or billboard images flashing at us everywhere we turn?," Palin wrote. "People of faith and common decency just shrug and move on from the constant assault on their sensibilities; we don't call for censorship -- at least I don't."

Within an hour of posting the note on Facebook, Palin's comments had more than 300 likes. The note was capped by a copy of the letter she sent to Alaska Airlines executives -- Chairman & CEO William S. Ayer and President Bradley D. Tilden:

Dear Mr. Ayer and Mr. Tilden:

Thank you for your tremendous service to Alaskans and so many others over all these years! We love Alaska Airlines. As I tell everyone, it is my favorite.

In my book "Going Rogue" I gave a special shout-out to airline employees because of the extraordinary customer service and good attitudes I witness on flights that my family and I take around this great country. It's inspiring and impressive to see the sweet spirit of hard working airline employees shine, in spite of sometimes difficult people and circumstances dealt with everyday.

Also inspiring and impressive, and very encouraging, is the special touch Alaska Airlines has blessed fliers with for many years. Your small prayer cards that remind us of the beauty of thankfulness have never ceased to amaze me. In this tumultuous world, finding this little tangible reminder of such an important virtue is always uplifting! Thank you for providing the cards.

It's come to my attention that the cards may be discontinued due to a few who are offended. I really hope this is just a rumor. Please remain strong and courageous in the face of a cultural trend that wants to wage war on any positive thing that a few may construe as offensive. The Alaska Airlines tradition should be looked upon as an all-American, hopeful, encouraging gesture. Please don't discontinue the cards.

Thank you again for your service!

Within the political sphere, Palin's thoughts seem to still wield clout with voters. Days before the polls opened in South Carolina for the GOP primary there, she pushed some support toward Newt Gingrich's campaign, saying that she "would vote for Newt" to keep the primary process going if she were a South Carolinian.

Her message seemed to resonate with South Carolinians, who sent 40 percent of the vote to Gingrich.

We never assumed Palin to be a master of comprehension, theology, foreign geography/policy, or the English language, but it would be beneficial for her to learn the difference between "non-denominational" and "secular". The Book of Psalms may be considered "non-denominational" in one regard; i.e., when your sole point of reference is the overall family of Judeo-Christian religions, but I think she missed the point of the airline's policy change.

This is a great cause for Sarah. She has the right to her oppinions and we would all be lucky if she would spend 8 hrs a day raising awareness about what she sees as an injustice. Maybe she will look to have a Hindu prayer, a Muslin prayer, and a Budest prayer all added. There is a lot of work to get to. It should keep her busy and out of our hair for hopefully many years to come

What can you say about a former governor writing a business letter in which she notes the "shout out" she gave to Alaska Airlines employess in her book? Shout out? Really? She worries about the stuff on billboards. I worry about our political leaders (and I used that term rather loosley) giving should outs. Have you ever heard President Obama giving a shout out? Hillary giving a shout out?

How this works:

1. The Religious Right takes on a cultural issue.

2. The Religious Right loses that cultural issue.

3. Go to step 1.

Why is SP concerned about Alaska Airlines business practices? Isn't she one of the politicians always screaming about over-regulation and government interference? It's Alaska's choice to make the change. It's their business decision and none of her business.

She doesn't have the right to her opinion? Why do you suppose AA decided to stop putting the cards out? If the decision was consumer driven, and she uses AA a lot, then she has just as much right to write to them as anyone else. That's one way a business makes decisions-what they do does affect their customers. I don't believe this is a case of government interference or over-regulation-AA made the decision on their own. I know, I know, just another chance to be snarky about Sarah. The H8te continues!

Errr Sarah, my dear little dumbazz, if a prayer is from psalms if it hardly non-denominational...psalms is of the bible and thus Christian....idiot!
So yes, plenty of us non Christians will get a little shirty in light of how many have Christianity
Pounded upon us daily... The place for prayer and religion is either private or in church ....

The Constitution says the govt. may not impede the free expression of religion. If a private company-AA- wishes to put prayer cards on their food trays-they can do it.
If you didn't like it, just hand it back to them and say "no thank you."

By the way-----The Psalms are found in both the Bible and in Hebrew writings. No need for name-calling!

I wonder how many HP users would get upset if instead of prayer cards, a political statement was on their tray? How many would demand an all Democrat or an all Republican airline?

If an airline was stupid enough to do that, do you think that the US government would cancel their ability to land at a non-denominational/apolitical airport?
