When rescuers found a starved puppy whose eyes were gouged out, they quickly sprang into action.
Animal abusers used Andre, a miniature pinscher, for BB gun practice and left him for dead in a plastic bag, according to Pheonixnewtimes.com.
The tortured puppy, who was found with bb's lodged under his skin and starved to the point of looking like a “skeleton,” is now being treated at the Circle L Ranch Rescue in Phoenix.
"He must have been in so much pain. His eyes were hanging out of his head," Susy Hopkins, Andre's foster caretaker, told the news outlet. "He's been so neglected and abused."
Andre received a blood transfusion and is gradually gaining weight and recovering.
"He'll adjust, but at this point, he's still confused," Dr. Deborah Wilson, a veterinarian at Circle L Ranch Rescue, told Azfamily.com "He doesn't know why he can't see."
To help bring justice to Andre's plight, PETA has stepped in to offer up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the crime.
"Animal abusers are cowards," PETA Director Martin Mersereau said in a statement. "They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them."
To help other animals that have been subjected to abuse, a fundraiser has been set up in Andre's honor to benefit Feathers Foundation, a nonprofit that rescues animals from neglect, euthanasia, and slaughter. To donate to Andre's cause, click here.
