Erin Brockovich To Investigate Mystery Illness At Le Roy High School

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/27/2012 4:54 pm Updated: 01/31/2012 11:27 am

UPDATED JAN. 30: CNN reported that the Le Roy Central School District is hiring an outside environmental testing company to test Le Roy High School and the surrounding community.

"Our community has suddenly found itself at the center of national attention due to the students who have been exhibiting neurological symptoms," school district superintendent Kim M. Cox said in a statement, CNN reported. "This has led to much speculation, conjecture and misinformation in the national media and consequently within our community."

What's causing the mysterious tic-like illness affecting 15 students at Le Roy High School in New York?

The famous environmental activist Erin Brockovich is aiming to get to the bottom of it.

USA Today reported that Brockovich -- the woman who linked cancer cases with toxic drinking water in California, spurring a 2000 movie starring Julia Roberts -- is going to launch her own investigation into the cause of the illness that has now affected 14 girls and one boy at the school.

Brockovich is getting involved upon finding out that there was a toxic chemical spill that occurred near the school 40 years ago, thereby contaminating the water and ground, USA Today reported.

"We're just trying to eliminate everything, and she wants to eliminate that it's the environment," Don Miller, whose 16-year-old daughter is one of the girls affected by the illness, told ABC News. "It's a possibility and she wants to either prove it is or it isn't something in the environment."

However, the New York Department of Health has not found that there is any environmental or infectious cause of the mystery illness, with department spokesman Jeffrey Hammond telling ABC News that "the school is served by a public water system. ... An environmental exposure would affect many people."

But Brockovich told USA Today: "When I read reports like this that the New York Department of Health and state agencies were well-aware of the spill and you don't do water testing or vapor extraction tests, you don't have an all-clear."

Recently, Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, a neurologist who has seen some of the girls with the mystery illness, told MSNBC that he has diagnosed them with conversion disorder, which is when there is high levels of stress or conflict that is manifesting itself physically.

ABC News reported that PANDAS -- a strept-related neurological disorder -- and side effects of taking the HPV vaccine Gardasil have been ruled out as possible causes of the illness.

A few months ago, 12 girls began exhibiting the strange Tourette-like tics. Just this week, the New York State Health Department confirmed that two more girls and one boy are now exhibiting the strange symptoms, WGRZ, an NBC affiliate, reported.

The symptoms include outbursts, shaking and tics, similar to Tourette Syndrome. Tourette is characterized by tics, which include things like eye-blinking, head-jerking, eye-darting, shoulder-shrugging and yelling or throat-clearing -- all of it uncontrolled, according to the Mayo Clinic.

"I used to cheer every day ... I used to go to two art classes every day," Thera Sanchez, one of the girls with the illness, told NBC last week. "Now I'm not in school."

thajema@aol.com writes: As per the investigation done at Washington state University, forestry Dept. plants especially Poplar trees can suck up the chemical toxins such as Trichlore Ethylene (TCE) from the soil. Such toxins will enter the plant genome and will remain there as transgenes for very long time. During adverse conditions of another host such transgenes will enter the human beings through Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) and produce the toxic transgene expression with twitching etc. This has to be investigated by conducting community gene sequencing studies of the plants in the locality and the gene sequecing study of the girls involved to find out the transgenes in the girls. This is based on the Hypothesis of Gene Re-cycling. For further information contact Thajema. Feb.09,2012

I believe with these new lawyers and investigators on hand the ones pushing the truth will eventually be brought forward. I am amazed to hear nothing from the ones responsible for the train chemical spill. I am amazed to hear nothing on WHO did the investigations, where they were done and what tests were performed.
If no one can tell that the ones running the initial investigations as well as the doctors testing the patients are biased then there will be serious problems when more cases like this come about.
Who is being told nothing is wrong with the environment and who is in charge of further investigation? Anyone know?

They must of got an overdose strain of what they are putting in all of our drinking water to make us feel like we need to get on a mental altering pill. Funded by all the pharm manufacturers.

We had a cat on which my wife placed some drop of ivamec to help rid her fleas, etc. The cat developed the exact symptoms as these girls: a multitude of tics: twisting her head, double meowing, and something like cerebral palsey symptoms. If it is poisoning, they need to find the source soon!

I have been having these same tics for about four (18-22) years and my doctors (trust me, I've seen a few) don't know what is causing them. I've never been to New York and I've never met these girls. I also haven't taken vaccines, or the HPV shot, or anything of the sort. I don't lead a high-stress life. These tics are my big stress.

You jackasses that say they're faking it need to stop assuming that every teen wants attention. Especially for something like this. Being told that you're just making up a medical problem for attention is not only hurtful to you, but it keeps a problem that obviously affects many people from being discussed. It's embarrassing when you're sitting in the middle of class and can't control what's going on in your own body. Instead of discouraging people for trying to find out what's wrong, or trying to shame them into stopping by calling them liars (which doesn't work, because I've been called a liar over this a few times and they still don't stop), maybe you could crack a medical book and try to help.

Sincerely,
Annoyed-In-Arkansas

Is there a possibility that any of the teen Leroy High School students received the vaccine for the papalovia virus? I was just wondering is there might be some connection between their situation and the vaccine. Has this factor been investigated at all?

I have a background in this field, why hasn't ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry) been called in for an Environmental Epi investigation? I thought this the first time I saw the news on this case. I have an education in Environmental Health and alot of local departments might not have the equipment or the tools to perform this type of investigation on this size scale. These are neurological symptoms that unfortunately can be hard to pinpoint due to genetic variation, onset of symptoms and exposures. This is a hard fast reminder as to why brown fields still need attention for clean up and under several laws this is taking way too long for resolvement.
11:04 AM on 02/06/2012
For a person in this field, you sure do jump to conclusions like the less researched posters here. Would turrets "like" tics be the first and only symptom in a toxic exposure, be it in ground, water, or air?

Reports are that the ground and water testing have come back negative for toxic chemicals. Would ATSDR get involved in a case where tests are negative?
08:26 PM on 02/09/2012
I am not jumping to conclusions at all. I am just surprised that no one called in a complaint when this many people popped up with these symptoms. There are not many chemicals out there that would cause this type effect. I can see how this would be the first thought. I think that you are presumptuous in reading into my statement.

However, I don't think that "stress" has induced this type of outcome. But in a case like this a thorough assessment would need to be done. And I mean thorough. Be it medical background on the "potential exposed" etc. And think again before you assume, you have to know what your looking for before you can test for it. That is alot to rule out. It is hard to get all the resources necessary as well as the collaboration needed for this. But the bottom line to my statement was of concern and also that a little more attention is needed in that something is there and it needs to be looked at. At this point, some of the metabolites from many chemical exposures would not even show up in certain tests. Anyway....thanks for your feedback. I hope these folks get the support they need and are not shoved off by the medical community because someone doesn't have an immediate answer for them.

@ehs1234........I think you make a good point .......most likely its because an attempt is being made to keep the results confidential.......and not inform the public........considering the volatile chemicals involved.........their only concern is lawsuits at this point......

First and foremost, I hope these girls' families WILL GET THE GIRLS OUT OF THAT AREA! They should be taken to a warm, sunny location where they can be outdoors in the sunshine and breath clean, fresh air and drink pure uncontaminated water and away from any contaminated soil. Please get them away from that toxic spill. It's incredibly appalling that these young girls have been suffering this "mysterious illness" since October 2011 and all the so-called "experts" were quick to dismiss it as a "conversion" disorder which is basically a psychosomatic illness. There was essentially no real environmental testing conducted prior to Eric Brockovich showing up with an expert and one day later they came out with the finding of the toxic spill of 25 railroad cars spilling 30,000+ gallons of toxic chemicals and solvents onto the ground which seeped into the ground water and the site was never cleaned up and apparently rocks from that spill were used to build LeRoy High School. Are you kidding me? Are we to believe that no "authorities" in the LeRoy area knew of this toxic spill that was sickening their children?

Love Erin, love her film, however she is dead wrong on this one. This is a hoax and those girls will get tired of acting. Who knows what chemicals have been spilled in the past, however those girls are acting, anyone can see this.

Interesting. I had the opposite impression watching Dr. Drew this evening. I believe we are looking at the tip of an iceberg.

I too think they are acting. And now don't know how to back out of it. The symptoms they show are so easy to mimic. People exposed to chemical polutants get cancers, and other body illnesses. Not turrets like sypmtoms.
Unless they all have some rare meningitis which effects the brain, it seems phony. Its also odd the Erin thinks a train crashing 40 years ago has now only effected a group of 15 year old girls with turrets liek symptoms.

NO. I guess everyone is faking including the new cases, huh?

Thank you Erin Brockovich! One more example of unexplained symptoms being lumped together as "hysteria" and blamed on the patient. There is a likely physical cause here-- possibly contagious infection or chemical contamination causing brain inflammation, leading to Tourette-like symptoms. As a psychiatrist, it frustrates and saddens me to see far too many patients with very real physical conditions that have been dismissed as being "all in their head." Is anyone measuring inflammatory markers, for example? Or presence of volatile chemical compounds? And of course, the community needs some epidemiological detective work to look for common exposures. Perhaps this very public case will be a focal point and impetus for change in how medicine is practiced. Bottom line: Let's look for the root cause rather than treating the symptoms -- and that, most often with medication which in cases of brain issues like this, can cause further toxicity and damage.

Dear Dr. Cass,

Please go to Huff Post Weird News Page and protest the shameless fun being made of Erin Brockovich and all of the LeRoy residents that are being affected by this serious unknown illness.
02:59 PM on 01/31/2012
Hello,

While I agree that it could be some form of menigitis or brain swelling sickness, and what we see is a side effect, this also very much seems like either a hoax or mass hysteria. The odds that a group of girls the same exact age catching a sickness from an environmental factor at the same exact time seems very low to me. Almost unbeleivable really.

For those who care, Huff Post has a story up on their Weird News page that is practically rubbing dirt in the faces of these students. They're making fun (at their expense) at how, because of their disease we're all going to turn into Zombies if they don't soon figure out what the problem is. I think this is despicable.

I checked out, and you are right that it is not appropriate. It is like they are making light of it since the diagnosis is conversion disorder, as if that means it "isn't real".
07:40 PM on 01/30/2012
My high school had about 1000 students and not a single one had these tics and movement problems. I think it's criminally negligent for the doctors to be saying these students have mere stress conversion problems. Absolutely ridiculous.
15 students in the same school all with the same symptoms at the same time SCREAMS exposure to something. Virus, fungus, bacteria, chemical, Rx medication, etc. It could even be a case of intentional poisoning via the school lunches or water fountains or something along those lines.
I think it's a huge stretch to think a chemical spill from over 40 years ago could suddenly be poisoning people. There would be cases of this movement disorder all over the area around the spill and they would have started being diagnosed decades ago.
The parents of the affected students and the students should get together and figure out what the affected students all have in common. One friend they all have in common? One party they all went to? One food they all ate at lunch? One drink they all had? One water fountain they all drank from? etc. etc.
08:12 AM on 01/31/2012
I think we need to be careful to eliminate the possibility of chemical exposure from that chemical spill being the cause of these symptoms. Let's remember the environmental disaster of the Love Canal in Niagara Falls, NY. Hooker Chemical buried those toxic chemicals in the Love Canal in the 1940s and then it wasn't until the 1970s that the families living in homes around the Love Canal started to get sick from the toxic chemical exposure. That was a 30 year difference. I think it is very important to consider this as a possible source of these symptoms.

This is something that needs to have a better look at. I have a teen who has very similar symptoms. We have never been to that town. The last time I was in New York city was 8 years ago. In fact, I live in Brazil. When my child first started showing symptoms about 9 months ago I thought she was attention seeking. Then I watched that she did not increase in symptoms when she knew that she was being watched. The ticks have not progressed, but they have not receded either. Her symptoms are very mild. Most people who did not know her would not even see her ticks unless they were told to look for them. It often just looks like she is cracking her neck. The rhythm is what give it away. The doctors do not have an explanation for her. She has not been hit in the head or taken the HPV vaccine. She has not had any vaccines or injected medications in over 5 years and we live a very quiet and relaxed life. Most importantly, she has never met any of these girls, so there goes the conversion theory. The only potential connection is the fact that there is a lot of pollution in our city, but we only use bottled water for everything but bathing. Perhaps this is something new that needs to be investigated on a wider scale than that town.

flygirl, is your daughter teen aged? At this age they start to worry about society, looking cool, impressing boys, competing, you name it. All that causes stress, and it manifests itself in different ways in people. While don't show a care in life, others worry too much. It sounds like your daughter is simply worrying. Induce fun conversations or activities, or somethign she finds relaxing and watch how the illness mysteriously goes away.

Signed, a guy who grew up with this same thing, and who now has teen kids that show typical stress reactions.
