Ayla Reynolds Case: Blood Found At Home Where Maine Tot Was Last Seen

Trista Reynolds Lie Detector Test

CLARKE CANFIELD   01/28/12 10:05 PM ET   AP

PORTLAND, Maine — Investigators have been analyzing blood found in the basement of a Maine home where a missing toddler was last seen six weeks ago, an official said Saturday.

The blood was found early in the investigation into Ayla Reynolds' disappearance from her father's home in Waterville, state police spokesman Steve McCausland said. The state crime laboratory has been running tests on it since then, but it was unclear when results would be available.

Ayla's father, Justin DiPietro, reported her missing Dec. 17. He had put her to bed the night before and said she wasn't there the next morning.

McCausland called the discovery of the blood "troubling." He declined to discuss how much blood was found in the basement or how long it might have been there.

Ayla was 20 months old when she disappeared. She had been staying with her father at the time in the house where DiPietro lives with his mother. Her mother, Trista Reynolds, lives in Portland.

DiPietro told police she was wearing green pajamas with polka dots and the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm.

DiPietro, his mother and a third adult were home the night of Dec. 16, and police have questioned all three, McCausland said.

"We believe they have not given us the full story," he said.

Both of Ayla's parents participated in a vigil Saturday on the City Hall steps in downtown Waterville.

It was the first time the two came face to face since their daughter's disappearance, said Bob Vear, a friend of the DiPietro family who organized the vigil. They spoke privately for about 10 minutes before giving each other a hug, Vear said.

DiPietro declined to discuss the discovery of the blood.

"I'm not going to answer any questions about it, but I will say this: If there was something there, I don't think I'd be standing here with you right now," he told the Morning Sentinel newspaper in Waterville.

A woman who answered DiPietro's mother's cellphone hung up after being asked about the blood.

Reynolds could not be reached for comment.

In an interview earlier in the day with the Morning Sentinel, she said she was preparing herself for any outcome.

"As a mother, as a parent, you need to mentally prepare yourself for the good, the bad, the worst," she told the newspaper. "I have been preparing myself for all of it during the last 40 days. I have told myself anything can happen. I could get the greatest news or I could get the worst news ever."

The blood was among hundreds of pieces of potential evidence that were removed from their home as part of a criminal investigation into the girl's disappearance. The discovery of the blood was first reported Saturday by WCVB-TV in Boston.

Ronald Reynolds, who is Trista Reynolds' father, said DiPietro hasn't been forthcoming with his version of what happened or what he knows. DiPietro has said he took a polygraph test, but has declined to say what the results were.

"They haven't given the full story, but this family has gone through so much pain, so much hurt," said Reynolds, who lives in Portland. "We're going into two months now and don't know anything, and all we get is the runaround."

Vear said he was first made aware of the blood sample Dec. 24, but he doesn't think it'll amount to anything.

"I cut myself at home all the time," he said. "It could be Justin's, it could be the baby's. There were five or six people in the house that night."

Investigators are searching for Ayla Reynolds, a 20-month-old Maine girl believed to have vanished from her bed while her family slept. Reynolds' father, Justin DiPietro, told investigators he last saw the child at around 8 p.m. on Dec. 16, 2011, when he put her to sleep in her own bedroom. The following morning, at around 8:50 a.m., he called police to say her bed was empty. This photograph was posted on a Facebook page dedicated to the missing toddler.

Very strange case. The police immediately searched the surrounding area with tracking dogs and then with cadaver dogs. Divers with the police have searched lakes and streams nearby.

Whatever happened to Ayla, she wasn't around the home for long. Someone took her and hauled tail out of the state if not into Canada.

How is her arm broken when di it happen with the father or mother why is she living with the father and why is the blood in the basement why is a 20 month old in the basement?is dhs involves why are monsters like this kilong their children because the "justice" system sucks when you are a child. As long as people get way with murder of their own children they world will continue to have murders of innoncent child like poor Caylee Anthony Please rally the government to have harder stricker rules for child deaths. If a child can't defend themselves and the people who are suppost to are useless who will protect them please report anything you think is inappropiate to a authoruty like dhs or the police.

The father claimed that he accidentally fell on Ayla. He has custody of the child because the mother is an even bigger loser and is a known drug user.

All I see in US news is missing and dead children, dead beat parents, parents are never together or drug addicts. 20 month old and already mother gave her to the dad! Well...then dad has baby and woops! She's gone missing. Not only that but she broke her arm previously. Being Canadian I am just astonished that you're child services can be so lacking. Are they so over worked that they can not see what is in front of them?

Another monster proving how manley he is. If he did murder this little one, pray he will meet his death at the end of a needle.

Has anyone heard how the child came to have her arm in a cast? That's pretty alarming, isn't it? Children are inadvertently hurt all of the time, but a 20 month old with a broken arm? That would at least warrant some questions from Child Protective Services, so what are the answers?
10:33 AM on 01/30/2012
Nevermind, just saw the story. Children do break a lot of bones, but the idea that a 20 month old would have a broken arm & not be screaming bloody murder, seems at least a wee bit hard to believe. Maybe it is true, though. That would make her an awfully docile child. I know when my son fell and mildly bruised his ankle, he screamed & shrieked so loud & long, he actually roused the dead & a whole lot of corpses showed up at my house & said, "Hey, you're taking him in, right?" Which I did. Thanks, concerned zombies!

They just broke in on the news hera and said that at least some of the blood found in the basement was Ayla's. Again, we don't know how old it is, but I'm beginning to feel hopeless about their finding her alive. Please pray that I'm wrong.

I keep having to point out to people that first of all, the child is not even two years old at the time she was reported missing and secondly, she had only been in the house for two months, so how old could this blood, which is more than what a "small cut" would bleed, really be? It isn't old no matter how you define that. If she had been bleeding from a previous injury surely someone would know that already and the blood wouldn't be that significant to them. Also, the Reynolds' are saying that the last time they know someone saw Ayla aside from the DiPietros was November 24, so there's that. I just hope it all leads to a resolution at last.

I don't know how much blood was found, so I can't say if it was from a "small cut" or not. But if the blood was two months old, it wouldn't be related to her disappearance. I'm still praying they find her, and soon.

Just read a report that the blood found in the basement is Ayla's! Also, they told her mother that the amount was more than just a small cut! OMG I think there is going to be an explosion of truth soon! They need the truth to find this baby!

I always had my doubts about her crocodile tears and lies about being in the house then was not in the house! She does know something! I think the baby Lisa disapearance is still a mystery and have not heard that they found blood or any evidence for her recovery! Hope they find her soon!

Why do people feel the need to take the life of an innocent child? Just what did the child do to him or her to cause their death? I hope justice comes soon for Ayla. RIP baby.

it is an unnatural act. it goes against what is a nurturing natrual love of a mother for her baby. sane people like you and I cannot comprehend it, nor understand it.

correction on my reply post. she was staying with the father and not mom.

In her tv interview she looks highly suspicious.. Her behavior doesn't reflect someone who lost a baby just six weeks ago. She may be totally innocent, but I have doubts.

The mother? She wasn't even in the same town when the child disappeared. How is one "suppose" to act when they lose a child? how would you know?

No, they just confirmed tonight that the blood is Ayla's. And I don't care if they do post the same thing over and over, it gets attention. This case has gone on too long. We need to know what happened to Ayla.

I just saw that, too. I'm still praying for her survival, although my hopes plummeted at that announcement. They said "At least some of the blood" was Ayla's, but they didn't say how much or who el;se's blood was there. Also they didn't say how old it was. I know the chances are slim, but I've got to hope.

I think the father knows more than he is saying.A small child like that does not get out of bed and just leave. The police I'm sure are doing everything they can. They are not going to tell the media about their findings. The mother is not beyond suspition either. Hope this little angel is found soon.Even though it is unlikely i hope she is safe!
