If you look at some of today's most prominent green activists and environmentalists, you'll notice that many of them have something else in common -- they're 50 or older. The individuals featured below have led remarkable careers for various reasons, but they have also dedicated time and energy to supporting green causes.

From protecting rainforests to advocating for animals and alternative fuels, the work of these individuals covers a variety of issues and causes.

With more attention going to the lives of "Post50" individuals, both in and out of the spotlight, it becomes clear that that generation still has their eyes toward the future, and it's never too late to promote important causes for future generations.

Al Gore

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore has been a strong environmental advocate for several decades. He brought his environmentalism into the spotlight with his 2006 documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

Recently connecting the dots with trends in melting glacial ice around the world, Gore wrote, "Even though Antarctica is thousands of miles distant from the rest of the world, the melting ice on this continent should be of paramount concern to all of us. As our planet's ice melts, sea levels are rising steadily. This increases the risk of storm surges, coastal floods, diminished supplies of drinking water for billions of people, and hundreds of millions of climate refugees."

Gore also praised President Obama for rejecting the contentious Keystone XL pipeline project. On the chance that a renewed pipeline proposal might emerge, Gore writes, "Opponents of the Keystone pipeline must remain engaged and prepared to beat this proposal again when and if it resurfaces."
