Occupy Wall Street: 12 Arrested During Manhattan March In Support Of Occupy Oakland (VIDEOS)

12 people were arrested Sunday in Manhattan when an Occupy Wall Street protest--held in solidarity with the 400 protesters detained in Oakland Saturday--turned violent.

About 300 protesters gathered in Washington Square at 7PM Sunday, and marched across 14th street chanting "Whose street? Our street!" while occasionally surging into the road, dragging plastic construction barrels into the path of trailing cop cars. In a few instances, protesters tossed glass bottles at NYPD officers, prompting police to charge into the crowd and make arrests.

Both Gothamist and The New York Times report police--likely confused in the dark, especially as many protesters were dressed in black--arrested people who may have been innocent protesters or bystanders.

Then, according to The Times:

Just before 10 p.m., the marchers arrived on 9th Street just east of Avenue B and congregated in front of an empty former school building that had housed the Charas / El Bohio Cultural and Community Center before the group was evicted ten years ago by a developer, Gregg L. Singer, who had bought the building at a city auction.

"This was once a vibrant community center," a man said as others pounded on a tall plywood fence that sealed the empty building off from the sidewalk. "The people in Oakland wanted to create a community center."

Protesters' tactics Sunday were a stark departure from the normally nonviolent demonstrations conducted in New York since September, when the movement started.

Many used the "Black Bloc" method of demonstrating, in which protesters don dark clothes, ski masks and scarves to conceal their identity and appear as one mass. The Observer gives some context:

Black Bloc protests first came about in the 80s in Europe and were a part of the anti-World Trade Organization demonstrations in Seattle in 1999. Protest techniques are disruptive and volatile. They include rioting, vandalism and fighting as well as assistance to fellow protesters in fleeing police. These techniques are probably why many who casually mention Black Bloc protests online often include the word, "anarchists."

And although it appears the mainstream Occupy movement doesn't support Black Bloc methods, the protest announcement, titled "Solidarity Sunday-Wear Black Fight Back" may have invited the violent tactics.

it's a wonder why the other OWSers didn't just point out to the cops those that were throwing bottles or intervene and make a citizen's arrest. I guess they felt like those throwing bottles are an important part of their movement.

I applaud people doing something in Manhattan other than slurping latte, eating at restaurants, worshipping celebrities, and stapled to their iPhones.

So crowding the streets in the most populated city and screaming and acting like baboons is doing something?

Anyone else want to join OWS? Not only will you get an instrument for the drum circle and a Guy Fawkes mask (made famous by the corporate made movie "Vendetta"), you'll now get your very own American flag to burn. Just take it to the next city hall looting.

Although I think some of your criticism is spot-on, your cynicism and general sentiment communicate that you don't really understand what's happening or why. They're not anti-American people looking for handouts. They're protesting an economic system that most rational human beings agree is slanted to favor corrupt government and powerful megacorporations with no accountability. They're advocates for an economic system that includes responsibility at all levels. And I might not be chanting and playing into the leftist radical stereotypes, but I support their efforts and their message.

What pride is there in supporting the status quo, really? It's pretty disturbing to see how many people heed every word of those with power. 230 years ago, it was people like you whining about the revolutionaries for disturbing the peace and questioning the royal government. Now you're loyalists to corporate capitalism and its allies? Whoever has the most money, right?

speaking of chicago....wait and see how fun things are in shy town during May.

and watching the republicans is bizarre and momentarily amusing but that party is imploding. of course, they can easily win by hijacking votes like they did in 2000 and 2004.

no matter who is elected, remember, they were pre-selected because they're all advancing the same corporate, global agenda which benefits them and legalizes their continuation of displacing us thru economic violence.

I don't believe those people are part of the 99%. The 99% are to busy working at jobs where the day they don't work they don't get paid. There is no time for occupying wall street or demonstrating.
07:31 AM on 01/31/2012
Why would you not support democracy? Why do you want the elite writing our laws to enrich themselves? Why do you think that it is ok for our politicians to be owned by the lobbyists? I work at a major corporation, am a small business owner and I support democracy and equal opportunity for all. I am the 99%.

There is only time to go on the internet and whine about them. You do realize that you've spent the last 30 years working longer hours for less pay because of the failure of trickle down economics. It's good to know someone is prepared to do something to end those failed policies if you're too lazy to do so.

Amateur OWS activists don't want to accept responsibility for violent criminal thug self styled anarchist fellow travelers, but leaders of OWS (are there any leaders who want to step forward) have done nothing to disavow or distance themselves from this element. On the contrary the OWS demonstration organizers spread a come one come all message using internet social media, without a unified or even recognizable hierarchy of authority in control. What a mess.

07:57 PM on 02/01/2012
I'm not ticked off, but I regret a missed opportunity and a message lost. Police have behaved badly on several occasions, so public sentiment would tend to favor OWS and possibly give protesters a receptive hearing. The violent destructive conduct by some protesters, who join the crowds for the havoc rather than the purpose, put the protest activity in the same or worse light as the outragious excessive force by police.
01:17 PM on 02/03/2012
of course OWS isn't going to distance itself from the trash. They are the trash. This is what this movement is.

looks to me more like the cops are the violent, criminal thugs as i view video and 1st hand accounts round the country regarding the behavior of the cops.

so easy to believe cops are ALWAYS acting 'properly and with measured force' isn't it?

that's because the mind set of this culture is that it's okay to see violence come down the beating stick but it's unimaginable to send it back up. what a true shame for people who love to cling to the romantic ideals of the american revolution, constitution and all that was fought for back then.

the system is CORRUPT and a growing number of people are fed up. maybe they aren't coming at it the lovely, peaceful way you'd like to see but it hardly matters. when they're peaceful you criticize and jeer and when the cops kettle them and provoke them you scorn them for their reaction.

04:58 PM on 01/30/2012
If these protesters are suppose to represent people in the City of New York, why are they all "White???" New York is known for being highly multi-racial. Also, why are some of these people wearing "masks???" If they are so dedicated to their cause why not show their faces? Those masks give the impression of bandits and crazies.
Judging from the videos, it appears more of a free-for-all and a big attempt to not only disrespect our police force, but to also try to demonize them.....

Sorry but the newly militarized NYPD do a fine job of demonizing themselves.

Probably due to the fact that I have excellent vision and I have never seen a person of color with a Black Face and White Hands? (Oh, and I do not believe these misguided individuals are doing Minstrel Shows in 2012?)
As for the NYPD, be sure you never get into a situation where you might need their "assistance!" Because you obviously do not respect them........ Well, who knows? Maybe when one of those "out of control" protesters attack you, lol:)

How sad that this mob has been incited by the President of the United States. Our President has ceased to fulfill all that high flying rhetoric that he promised with Hope and Change. He has brought the worst of Chicago politics to the White House. Hopefully Americans have seen through all the smoke and mirrors of gutter style politics and will send Obama back to a city more suited to his style of governing.

This mob was incited by TERRIBLE POLICIES that destroyed our economy. Terrible policies created by Republicans. Republicans have brought America the worst economic policies this nation has ever seen. Not just under the Bush administration but also the last time they controlled both the White House and the Congress in the 1920's. Hopefully Americas will look through the rhetoric of the current crop of Republican candidates, who have learned NOTHING from their failings, and keep moving our country as far away from trickle down disaster as possible.

No you may spin this all you want to but the 1% and the 99% phrases were clearly started by Obama and picked up and run with by the far left. Obama has driven home over and over the class warfare tune and now you have the lawless tearing up cities and leaving squalor in their wake. This is Obama's mess and he will pay for it in November. America is fed up with this and will not stand for it any more.

Creating EIGHT MILLION loss jobs and MILLIONS of foreclosed homes in your administration or because of the policies of your administration are also beyond normal politics. Hey suckers, in case someone hasn't already told you, this ain't your daddy's recession, it's your granddaddy's depression. And like the last DEPRESSION it was caused by REPUBLICANS with bad SUPPLY SIDE POLICES that we have yet to fully root out of our tax codes and fiscal system.

We haven't SOLVED economic inequality in this country yet, last time I checked. We haven't even overturned ONE NEOCON fiscal policy. Just ask Mitt Romney and his accountant.

OWS: A fringe group of people, driven by press coverage, not happy with the system decides to bring on a new world order not by democratic ways but by burning the flag, looting, threatening, harassing and disrupting the lives of the very same Americans they should be winning over? Didn't Ahl Kayeddah try that in NYC, PA, and DC 10 years ago and Americans didn't care much for it and still preferred democracy?
