Ivy-Leaguers Behaving Badly

First Posted: 01/31/2012 2:32 pm   Updated: 01/31/2012 3:32 pm

Ivy League bad behavior has been in the news of late. The recent scandals at Yale and Dartmouth have dominated the web (well, college websites especially). We wondered-- what other scandals have plagued the Ivy League?

Plenty, we soon found.

Check out our slide show of Ivy Leaguers Behaving Badly, and then tell us, what do you think of the spate of scandals afflicting the Ivory Tower? Weigh in below!

It was almost like a movie. Student-athlete Patrick Witt had to choose between playing quarterback in the Harvard-Yale game and interviewing for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Witt chose the game, and won accolades as a result. But all was not as it appeared. Just last week, The New York Times published a piece exposing the fact that Witt was actually implicated in a sexual assault case, the real reason his Rhodes candidacy collapsed.

My son is top of his class, Pop-eye SAT's, and a great resume. We can afford whatever at this point, but he has over a quarter million in scholarships sitting on the table as of today. We went to all the local dog and pony shows for the Ivy's and he noted what kind of people were in the room. We went online and looked at some of the links between the colleges and some of the nasty behaviour on wall street and he decided to walk away from that world. He applied to and was accepted to colleges that better reflected his value system which included a highly ranked west coast school, but none of the Ivy's. We are so proud of his choices, and look forward to him revealing his final choice.

Idk whether we should pity the victim or yell at him for not exercising control over himself and what goes on around him. He's an adult. After coming out of it, where is the adult now?

lol, I don't understand why anyone would do anything like that for friends.

For humanity, I am going to give the benefit of the doubt and say that the above description may not be 100% accurate, but if it is than I have no clue why anyone would do this, again, for friends. I mean, I think frats in general are for ****, but this takes it to another level of absurdity to the fullest.

You know, I frequent Huffington Post for both quality reporting and generally enlightening comments, but as a proud Greek, I'm insulted that you are willing to cast all of us in the same light. Its close-mindedness like yours that makes me ashamed of humanity in general.

You want to know what's really messed up? Despite the scandal, UPenn's student government is going on to re-write the Alcohol Policy they were found to have been in violation of. THAT is much more of a scandal than the fact that they were found guilty of breaking the antihazing and alcohol policies. That story just keeps getting more and more ridiculous.

Going to an Ivy league school doesn't guarantee success and it quite often breeds snotty self absorbed types who think they can do no wrong.

And I guess not going to an Ivy leads to drawing sweeping conclusions about all who do?
11:12 PM on 01/31/2012
Well, it's what right-wingers do really well, drawing sweeping conclusions. Newt's an expert at it.

since most leaders in business, banking, wall street and many of the puppets in politics have Ivy League educations, it would literally take years to list all the bad things these people do. IF they dont start out evil, they soon are brainwashed to be that way upon enrollment in one of the Ivy Greed schools. Arrogance, superiority complex, narcissism, greed ,selfishness and cutting edge techniques on criminal acts to make huge profit are all the qualities that are instilled in students at these schools. But the most are hose in the business schools.

"most leaders in business, banking, wall street and many of the puppets in politics have Ivy League educations"

I'm not sure that this is true, statistically -- can you show that it is?

BUT -- let's just say that it is true, for the sake of your argument.  Your conclusion requires not what you said about where most leaders come from, but rather that the majority of those who attend the Ivy League schools end up in as those leaders and do all the bad things you suggest.  And I really don't think you can show any such thing, given the numbers and the diversity and the many different areas of study.

Lots of Ivy League graduates, if they could, end up in these above mentioned jobs/positions, but there are substantial, even/especially good people who come from non-Ivy league backgrounds. Also please remember that very academically reputed and elite colleges like Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley are not classified as an east coast Ivy League college.

My own kid got admission in Brown and Cornell, but chose Berkeley because of his interest in Biology research (after researching what they had to offer). He is one of the most grounded and nice 18-year olds that you can find - according to his school teachers and the parents of the girls in his high school class, when he was 16.

I am sure that he is not an exception and there are lots of students even in the Ivy Leagues like him. Like everywhere, you get the good with the bad, and intelligence and super accomplishment alone does not guarantee good ethical, empathetic person, as I am sure you know.
