Oregon Special Election Results: Suzanne Bonamici Projected Winner, Rob Cornilles Defeated

Oregon Special Election Results

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon Democrat Suzanne Bonamici will be the newest member of Congress after a decisive victory in a special election to replace former Rep. David Wu, who resigned in a sex scandal.

Bonamici, a former state senator, defeated Rob Cornilles, owner of a sports marketing business. With 98 percent of the votes counted, Bonamici led 54 percent to 40 percent.

"I really believe that the election reflects that my priorities and the district's are aligned," Bonamici told The Associated Press after a victory speech Tuesday night to her supporters in downtown Portland. "And I'm thrilled with this opportunity."

Bonamici, 57, said she expects to speak with congressional leaders Wednesday and find out when she'll be expected in Washington.

National Democrats poured more than $1 million into the Portland-area district, determined not to drop another safe seat after losing a New York district left vacant by Anthony Weiner, who acknowledged sending provocative text messages and resigned.

Cornilles said the incessant television advertising took a toll.

"If you don't have the resources to respond to it, it becomes very difficult," he told The Associated Press.

Cornilles made his second bid for the seat after losing to Wu by a similar margin in 2010. He said he wants to spend time with his family before deciding whether to make a third try.

Bonamici won't get much of a break before gearing up for the next campaign. She'll face a May 15 primary before the general election on Nov. 6.

The district will become marginally friendlier for Republicans in the next election, when new district boundaries will leave out a swath of Democratic voters.

No date has been set for Bonamici to take office, her campaign said. Once she does, she will focus on helping constituents who haven't had a representative solve problems with the federal government, she said.

Wu stepped down from Congress in August after a newspaper reported that a young woman accused the seven-term Democrat of making an unwanted sexual advance at a Thanksgiving dinner. His resignation capped months of reports about Wu's bizarre behavior that included widely panned photos of the congressman wearing a tiger costume.

Bonamici emphasized her experience in the Legislature and as a lawyer working on consumer protection issues at the Federal Trade Commission.

Late in the race, Cornilles tried to tar her with the scandal that took out Wu. He also dinged her for votes that raised taxes.

Cornilles promoted his business experience and he downplayed his GOP affiliation in a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans. But he couldn't overcome Democrats' work to discredit him.

Democrats and their allies pummeled him with television ads that attacked his business credentials, highlighted his opposition to abortion and tried to align him with the tea party.

"This election is a win for middle class Oregon families who want someone to fight for them," said Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., chair of the campaign committee for House Democrats, which spent $1.3 million on the race.

The district includes downtown Portland and the suburbs in Washington County, as well as smaller communities in Clatsop, Columbia and Yamhill counties.

Democrats have represented the district for nearly four decades. The last Republican to come close to a victory was Molly Bordonaro, who came within 3 points of defeating Wu for what was then an open seat.

"It's a pretty exciting night here at our celebration," Bonamici told the AP late Tuesday. "Now the real work begins."

These elections are more important at this time in our history than any in the last 30 years. The country is at a cross roads. One path leads to a more humane, efficient and fairly governed nation and the other is a confusion of illusions, dreams, hopes and fantasy. In the right corner we have republicans with policy illusions that don't work, dreams of mass dominance, hopes of controlling the masses and  Read More...

It has been interesting to read the mostly civil conversation of those of you in Oregon and out the West coast in general when it comes to the differences between the Democratic and Republican parties. As has been mentioned the republican party has abdicated any responsibility to their base and is now catering to the fringes only. The democratic party has it own issues but I believe they have learned they must work together get hings done in Washington. Their failure to do that is what led to their losing control in 2010. As a democrat I agree that the other guys are needed to bring a different viewpoint to the table. President Obama spend the first two years in office in an attempt to do just that and each time he reached his hand across the aisle it was slapped away. I still have not heard any definitive plan from any republican on what can be done to correct the issues we face in America. Tax breaks for the wealthy and deregulation is NOT the answer. We have the past 10 years as proof. And before anyone mentions it I do NOT expect government to have all the answers. I do expect the government to provide me with the tools to find them myself. That is what good government does.

Susan Bonamici (DEM) wins in Oregon!
I can not say how happy this news makes me.

The thought of a Tea-Bagger (Rob Cornilles) winning an election in Oregon
almost gives me a heart attack. I wish that every Democratic official would
start Preaching to the public, the importance to vote Democrat, in EVERY
race that is coming up. If we want Obama to be able to get things done in
Washington, then EVERY seat, that is coming up for vote, MUST be
filled with a Democrat.

I don't care if the Democrats name is Micky Mouse, it is a must for EVERY senate or Congressional race to be loaded with Dems this time around.

PS: Pass the word....

Yea, well tell the red states...there's been nothing but trouble in WI, OH, MI, IN and now AZ...they all seem to be crying since the 2010 elections, but I'll bet they all vote Republican again. I just can't make any sense of it??

My opinion is, well too bad, they can vote Republican if they want, but just shut up about the consequences afterward when they are losing their rights one by one very quickly.

The agenda is there for anyone to see

Me, I can only vote in the State of Oregon & for President Obama for a second term...

As someone who lives in the district, I can relate that Bonamici won by the same margin that she held two months ago, before all of the "negative" ads that Cornilles complained about were even aired. I can also relate that the Oregon Republican Party sent out a mailer that lied about Bonamici's support for Medicare. The report that was referenced in the GOP mailer has on their website a demand that the GOP desist from lying about Bonamici.

I hope so, but I've been listening to too many states yelping after they voted in the Republicans in 2010 because they didn't/don't like President Obama (apparently they seem to enjoy what the obstructionists have been doing since 2008 & what Bush did for 8 years??) Now they are woe-is-meing because they are quickly losing their rights...what in the world did they expect?
WI, OH, MI, IN AZ...all in the news and being unhappy.....but, I bet every one of them will vote Republican again. It makes no sense to me at all to me.

Agreed!! when will we stop voting against our best interests and vote for those who actually have an interest in us and not corporate America. As much as the TeaPotRepubs hate to admit it that is who is setting the policies for their party and since they are so radical themselves they are destroying themselves.

Yeah, it's been a double standard for decades.....

Doesn't matter that there's no comparrison of the actual personal effects of the "crimes" (virtually none in the matter of Weiner....)....

I don't think this election is necessarily a sign of things to come- but all you right wingers on here who are trying to prove that a Democrat winning this being news is proof that 2012 is going to the Republicans are stupid. Of course it's news... it's a special election... and the Democrat she is replacing was ousted for questionable behavior which means that there was legitimate concern that a Republican could win this district- if nothing else for lack of voter turnout from Dems who felt disenchanted with their own party.

The West bucked the trend in 2010 by voting overwhelming Democratic, while a large segment of the rest of the country didn't bother to go out and vote......And while the results in Oregon are no great surprise, it is worth noting that usually any party whose candidate gets embroiled in a sex scandal and resigns in disgrace (ala Wiener) has a difficult time holding onto the seat which has been vacated.......This is not the case in Portland where Suzanne Bonamici went on to crush her republican rival.......This portends well for the upcoming elections, as voters clearly suggest in this case that they don't trust the GOP to address the country's problems....

And those states are now paying for their Republican votes in 2010 with expensive recalls, rights being taken away, etc. (and, unfortunately, so are the rest of the states across this nation that didn't vote against themselves in 2010, not to the same high cost, but feeling the results just the same!!)

You are so correct (I almost said right). I actually think that the teaparty wins in states like Wisconsin were a good thing, in that they have thoroughly woken up the Dems and independents. We are all aghast at the maniacal power grabs going on in Wisconsin, Indiana, Florida, and Michigan. We will NOT stay home in November!

For those of you who see this as a harbinger of things to come for the Republican Party next November I’d like to explain a few things about Oregon’s 1st District. I live and vote in this district. Democrats have a 12% edge in voter registrati¬on here. Bonamici won by 15% which is only a 3% edge after you normalize the voter base.

As an independently minded Republican I can take solace in the fact that the DNC blew over $1.3 million on what was pretty much a sure thing. In this district Democrats tend to get elected even if they campaign with a dead baby impaled on the tip of a spear. Don’t read too much into this win.

And don't YOU disregard it, either. Cornilles tried to use the national GOP talking points which worked in 2010, especially in districts without incumbents. If they were still that effective, Bonamici would have been looking at a much closer race. The national GOP presidential race and the vituperative and misleading nature of his advertising turned off even his own supporters this time around.

Yea and in 2008 republicans in Florida had 1.8 million people show up to vote with that whole albatross named Bush hanging around their neck...So I am sure you would think the fired up 2012 republican base dead set on defeating the Evil President Obama who had 10 days to vote would or could double that turnout...But no....1.6 million people showed up to vote for Rombot...HAHAHAHA thats even less than the year of the albatross!

So you are right to not read to much into a Democrat winning in a Democratic area, but you should be concerned if 200,000 less republicans vote this year in the state of Florida.

Cornilles said he was 'original Tea Party candidate.'
Cornilles touted himself as a 'job creator.'

Two catch phrases that did not, this time, hold mythic sway.

Here's looking forward to a national trend.
