Rachel Maddow: Romney Has 'Issues Of Patriotism' Due To Offshore Accounts

Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow grilled Florida Congressman John Mica about whether Mitt Romney's personal finances and work at Bain Capital were "unpatriotic" on Tuesday night.

Romney's career and wealth, of course, have both been hot button issues in the campaign. The candidate released his 2010 tax return after much criticism about his reluctance to do so. The return revealed that he earned $21.7 million in 2010, and paid a lower tax rate than someone who earns $50,000 a year.

Before the polls closed in the Florida primary, Maddow put Romney supporter Mica in the hot seat about another controversial aspect of Romney's finances: his offshore accounts. She asked if he thought that the candidate's holdings in "notorious tax havens" raised "issues of patriotism." Mica defended Romney and appealed specifically to senior citizens, saying, "Everyone's looking for a better return and where to get that return."

Maddow forged on, bluntly asking whether Romney had acted in his own self-interest at the expense of the country when he sheltered millions in offshore accounts and outsourced jobs to Germany. "He got a better return for himself, it was not a better return for the country," she alleged.

Mica turned to a general statement of support for Romney. He acknowledged that Bain Capital could not save all the companies it worked with, but said that his candidate would best know how to "encourage investment and manufacturing."

You would think that Rachel intentionally burnt the gentleman at the stake. Instead, she asked honest, legitimate, forthright questions for which Mica had NO answers.

And that is the rightwing's problem. They have no answers to the reasonable questions, so they default to the standard responses or become argumentative and defensive - or lie. However, in the real world, those responses don't wash. In fact they bring about more suspicion and generate more questions. And drives away the moderates of your party as well as independents.

When being asked an honest question becomes being skewered, you've got a problem, and it's much bigger than the answer to the question.

Romney has been running for presidency for at least 6 years. You think he would put greed aside and keep his fortune in the United States. The act is unpatriotic; Romney can wrap himself in the flag while singing "America the Beautiful" - Romney is inauthentic. How he keeps his money defines him.

This is hilarious, coming from the party that loves to tax people but not PAY taxes. How can they roast Romney for putting his money in an offshore to save on taxes when they have SO many who just out and out lied and 'forgot' to pay their taxes?

Rangel, Geithner, Franken to name just a couple

Hypocrisy, thy name is Democrat LOL

His accounts are listed on his US tax return. That's as unhidden as you can get.

As for your 2nd statement - why not, we have Holder as the #1 sworn legal defender of the US thumbing his nose at Congress for well over a year now. Gimme a break!

Of all the issues with Romney, he being rich, is the least of my concern. Even as a Dem and as liberal as I am, I'd LOVE to make $56K a day. He is the "American Dream" and he was wealth was earned and stored legally, according to the current laws. All of us should (and secretly do) aspire to have wealth like Romney.

"Don't hate the playa...hate the game."

There are far more substantive issues than his wealth to be worried about. Rachael really fumbled the ball on this in a blatant partisan witch hunt. I'm disappointed Rach. You go off on these tangents from time to time.

Romney is hiding money to avoid paying taxes. That is an important issue.
10:00 PM on 02/02/2012
Perhaps, but it's not an illegal issue. This is the game of the wealthy. It may be an important issue, but to say it's unpatriotic is a bit of stretch.

the wealth just shows he's not clued into what the middle class is going through right now.

His tax policy, for example, would give HIM a huge tax break.
10:02 PM on 02/02/2012
Oh of course it would!! As one poster said in another thread, "If this guy is making $56K a day, why on Earth would he want to be President?" And he certainly isn't clued in to the middle class. His $10K bet with Perry was proof of that.

He's a schmuck--a rich schmuck--with policies and ideas that I personally don't like, but I don't his ability to legally shield his wealth from American taxes makes him "unpatriotic." I personally don't offer $10 back to the Feds because I'm feeling generous.

1 guess as to why Justice, any administrations, has never instituted the full-court press on off shore tax evasion. Freedom, the first line of defense for our gangsters.

The Kenndy family has kept most of their money in offshore accounts since the days of Joe Kennedy, the "sage" of the family.

Of course, the money of the Kennedy's, the Kerry's, the Peolsi's, etc., are never an issue when it comes to their money, how they made it, or where it's "stored.'

But what can you expect form MSNBC.

Really?  Do you just make this stuff up as you go along?  Do you have any evidence of that?

You do realize that Ted Kennedy had no problem releasing his tax returns, and that there has been no suggestion of that?

You do also realize, that Kerry's wealth is inherited, and he has been in public service most of his life?
As for Pelosi, her husband's investments have been scrutinized for years, and Republicans can't find anything untoward?

Try this one on for size. How 'patriotic' are these tax evaders?

http://washingtonexaminer.com/politics/columnists/2012/02/democrats-love-taxes-they-just-dont-want-pay-them/2159681

And that's not even counting Geithner, Rangel, etc., who just flat out 'forgot' to pay their taxes

Certain words set them off.  But in the case of this article, every post will be moderated before it is published.  If you look under the Orange comment line, it says that ALL comments will be moderated.

Frankly, since AOL, the moderation has expanded greatly.

Your insight is greatly appreciated. I never noticed that line before, but now that I'm aware there is the possibility of review before posting regardless of content, I will look for that line. Thanks a lot. I just started posting in this forum but I take your point. I left AOL many years ago, but I understand their situation. Thanks, again!

I still can't figure it out. Some comments make it while others don't. I see much worse already posted, but mine still get booted.

It's quite simple. If you're denigrating a Conservative, liberal huffers cheer you on. If you point out the obvious about a liberal or celebrity, you're toast.
