Scott Walker Recall: Democrats Unveil Three Senate Candidates

Scott Walker Senate

First Posted: 01/31/2012 6:40 pm Updated: 02/ 1/2012 9:33 am

With a heavy reliance on current and former legislators, Wisconsin Democrats have announced candidates against three of the four Republican state senators facing recall elections this year.

The Democrats will be fielding state Rep. Donna Seidel against Sen. Pam Galloway in a Wausau district, former Sen. John Lehman against Sen. Van Van Wanggaard in a Racine district, and former state Rep. Kristen Dexter against Sen. Terry Moulton in a Chippewa Falls area district. A challenger to Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Clyman) is still being recruited.

"We could not have done better," Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller (D-Monona) said. "They are folks that people have voted for before."

Miller said Democrats aimed to recruit known candidates in each of the districts, in two cases setting up rematches. Lehman, who served 14 years in the legislature, was defeated by Wanggaard in his 2010 reelection fight and Dexter defeated Moulton for an Assembly seat in 2008.

Lehman said he is not seeking payback against Wanggaard for defeating him 2010, but rather believes that the Republican has not represented Racine County well in the Senate. He was quick to tie Wanggaard to Gov. Scott Walker (R), who is facing his own recall election this year, and who has come under fire for his education aid cuts and changes to collective bargaining rights. Wanggaard has voted with Walker in these areas.

Both Seidel and Dexter jumped on the theme of Walker's policies and the Republican actions in the Senate, saying that they believe that there is a need for a change. Seidel said she had been contacted by constituents about challenging Galloway, while Dexter said the over 21,000 petition signatures to put a recall against Moulton on the ballot helped convince her to jump into the race.

Miller said recruitment efforts are still underway for a candidate to challenge Fitzgerald in the historically Republican district, noting that he believes a candidate can be found within the next 60 days.

An election date for the Senate recalls has not been set yet by the state Government Accountability Board, but Miller said the party believes it would likely be in early June.

Miller said he believes Democrats will likely have a shot of winning the three races that were announced today, noting that Democrats have held the Senate seats in the past. Following last year's recall election in the Senate, Democrats are one vote away from controlling the upper house. Miller pointed to the 21,000 to 24,000 petition signatures in each of the districts as encouraging to him of Democratic victory in the races.

"We have a voter list like nothing you have seen before," Miller said.

State Republicans were quick to tie Lehman, Dexter and Seidel to past policies in Wisconsin and predicted victory in the recalls.

"The candidates announced to challenge Republican state senators in potential recall elections are nothing more than conveyor belt Democrats who boast records of fiscal catastrophe," state Republican Party spokesman Ben Sparks said in a statement. "All three supported tax increases of over $5 billion, engaged in out-of-control spending binges, which led to Wisconsin's $3.6 billion budget deficit, and were at the helm as thousands of hard-working Wisconsin citizens were let go from their jobs due to massive tax hikes."

Talk about "a million" --
There isn't one chance in a million that this recall of our wonderful and brave state Senators will be successful.
Fraud is being exposed on every page of the recall petitions to a point where these sheets of fakes are far short of sufficient to meet the required minimums.
Now the question: -
Will Wisconsin's GAB do anything about these union crooks?
Prison time for every perpetrator who signed these petitions is a MUST...

Talk about selling out the taxpayers! All one has to do to be a Democratic political candidate in Wisconsin is lube up and make a "pledge" to the public unions and their agendas. Otherwise..........well, it'd be a shame if something bad were to happen to your political career.

If only one of these candidates wins, it's a two-fer. Scott Fitzgerald would also loose his majority position in the state senate to Mark Miller (D). Gotta love that.

Too bad for the Dems they are all Democrat retreads who turned Wisconsin into a fiscal mess at the behest of their Chicago brethern. What a gift to the Republicans, topped off by the hand picked candidate of the public unions, Kathleen Falk. And she's probably the worst candidate of them all. The Dems don't even have a candidate to run against Fitzgerald as of my posting this, assuming the recall signatures stand. Lots and lots of very, very questionable signatures. Of course, knowing Kevin Kennedy and most of the partisan GAB, they will allow anything and everything with nary an investigation. But I don't see a Democrat beating Fitzgerald in that heavily Republican district anyway.

With Falk as the only one running against him, I dont think they stand a chance. The Fed's need to legislate changes in the IRS Laws and decertify the 501(c)(5) portion of the law that exempts Unions from being tax exempt.

I guess you have not been reading about the John Doe probe into the governor's campaign goings-on in Scott Walker's office when he was county exec in Milwaukee County. Some of his employees have already been indicted and arrested. This does not include the railroad executive who has already been sentenced for violation of campaign law.

I live in Wisconsin and follow the news daily. Synonyms for corruption are decay, decomposition and depravity. All of it stinks to high heaven, and that odor is coming from Scott Walker's inner circle of advisors and aides. There is more to follow re corruption in Wisconsin politics. Stay tuned.

No argument there. Its good to see an insider trading ban bill going through congress. Let's see if your teaparty buddy Cantor agree to end the party, or just ignore it.

The Wisconsin State Republican Party PASSED a brick when they saw that over a million signatures were collected just for Walker's recall. They had no idea. {laughing}

Now, the stink of desperation is choking up their joint. It couldn't happen to a finer bunch, especially in light of their governor's overreach galvanizing action against incumbent Republicans across the nation.

We do owe Governor Walker a debt of gratitude for awakening a sleeping giant...

Because of Obama's bailout of GM and the unions, they still owe the taxpayers $28 billion. The company could have gone into one of the bankruptcy levels for restructuring and not used ANY taxpayer dollars.

Gov. Scott Walker is a patriot and believe it or not, his policies to cut out the corrupt bargaining rights for unions will do far more for the lower and middle class's than any of the b*&)s(*t democratic policies that any of your senators are going to pull out or their a**s. Jobs and Stimulus bills only put our country farther in debt and with very few jobs for billions and trillions to show for it. Balancing the budget so we can give tax cuts to the lower classes will do far more for our efforts to create jobs than anything.
