First Posted: 02/02/2012 8:32 am   Updated: 08/31/2012 10:48 am

Are you tired of your breakfast? You probably eat the same thing every day just out of ease or necessity. Well it's about time you switch up your routine. Hot cereal is most everyone's go-to breakfast during the months of winter, but that doesn't mean you have to eat oatmeal every single morning. There are other option out there too -- different grains and cereals to try.

The following collection of hot breakfast recipes includes everything from oatmeal to grits, including jazzed up versions. You'll also find recipes using wheat berries, bulgur and quinoa (a grain packed with protein and fiber). Feel free to vary the mix-ins and toppings -- use your favorite dried fruits and nuts. And if you prefer not cooking your cereal in milk, switch up the recipe with soy milk, almond milk or simply water. Try a new hot cereal for a change of pace.

Bulgur, basically cracked wheat, is typically used in savory Middle Eastern dishes but it also can be enjoyed for breakfast. This recipe turns bulgur into a hot cereal and tops it with raisins and almonds -- or use whichever dried fruit and nuts you like. Sweeten with maple syrup or agave nectar and garnish with banana slices.

I no longer eat breakfast, but I may eat breakfast food for lunch. Being gluten-free and unable to eat oatmeal either, I eat a lot of rice. Rice with scrambled eggs and sausage, rice with sausage gravy (thickened with rice flour), breakfast fried rice, the possibilities are endless.

I really enjoy Red Mill Scottish stone ground oatmeal sweetened with Cary's sugar free syrup. I alternate daily with ( those who are old enough to remember) Hot Ralston, which is still available on amazon.com. I also sweeten the Ralston, promoted by Tom Mix, with Cary's sugar free syrup as I'm diabetic.

I really liked Ralston as a kid - I'll look for it on Amazon. I hope that they also have Malto-Meal. That was really tasty. My mom made the cereals with milk instead of water, and with lots of butter and brown sugar.

I eat hot oatmeal practically every morning in spite of the rush I'm normally in. I mix in walnuts and raisins with the instant oatmeal while it's cooking and sweeten it with honey when I'm ready to eat it. I shave while the water is boiling and shower while the mixture is absorbing the water. It only takes a couple of minutes out of my routine to prepare a hot breakfast, making it well worth the time.

1The healthiest Oatmeal

Ingredients:
★½ cup Old Fashion Oats
★1 cup of water
★handful dry fruit, or nuts
★1 tsp honey, or raw Hawaii sugar
★1 tbsp Flaxseed powder
Method:
1.Cook in microwave for about 1 min (good indication that’s it’s at the perfect texture when it starts to boil up) Add honey/ sugar, and dry fruit ( I love the dry cherries from Trader Joe’s)
2.(Optional), but a healthy upscale, add Flaxseed powder. Yes! It’s good for Omega3, lignans, and fiber
Notes:
Did you notice? there was no milk added; A dairy free Breakfast.

Steel cut oatmeal with reduced fat buttermilk ( Same fat level as 2% milk). No sugar, no additives. Tangy , yummy and healthy although there is a bit more sodium in the buttermilk.

I eat Oatmeal absolutely every morning and fancy it up with dried cranberries, raisins, chopped nuts - pecans my favorite, and a dash of cinnamon. I cook it, then add fresh sliced strawberries and/or blueberries. A little soy milk, and it's my morning treat :) Might sound like a lot of work, but I keep everything handy in little bags and my husband even knows how to fix it for me now when I'm running late :)

Oatmeal YUK can not stand it no way it is fixed. Makes me sick.... Had so much of it when I was a kid guess because that is all we had during the depression. Guess it is good for you if you like it. But not for me.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! But since I know oatmeal is good for you I try to sneak it into savory instead of sweet dishes. For example, use it in meatloaf instead of bread crumbs, or put a little of it into thick savory sauces. Delicious. You don't even know it's in there! I DO like oatmeal cookies, though.
