Penelope Cruz PETA Ad: Star Gives Fur The Cold Shoulder In Billboard Campaign (PHOTOS)

Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz is the latest star to appear on a billboard as part of PETA's ongoing anti-fur campaign.

The 37-year-old actress condemns the use of animal fur for clothing in a billboard ad that went up Wednesday in New York's garment district near Penn Station.

The unveiling comes just ahead of New York Fashion Week, which begins on Feb. 9.

Similar campaigns will also be staged during Fashion Week in London and Milan.

The Oscar Winner is shown with her head turned as she looks over her bare shoulders next to the slogan "Give Fur The Cold Shoulder".

"Penelope Cruz has appeared on every 'best-dressed' list in the world, and the one thing you'll never see her wearing is fur," PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a press statement. "PETA couldn't ask for a more fitting emblem of the modern, glamorous woman who knows that there's nothing more beautiful than a woman who has a look that kills without anyone having to die for it."

A true animal lover, the actress recently adopted a number of rescue cats and dogs.

The ad aims to draw attention to PETA's campaign against fur which, the group explains on their website, leads to inhumane treatment of animals.

From PETA:

When people learn that millions of innocent animals are beaten, boiled, hanged, and electrocuted for their fur every year; that each fur coat, each piece of fur lining or fur trim, and each fur cat toy represents the intense suffering of dozens of animals; and that furriers intentionally mislabel the fur of cats and dogs as fur from other species or as faux fur -- then every decent human being will want to go fur-free.

Similarly, the Humane Society says the fur industry is notorious for extreme mistreatment of animals.

"On fur factory farms around the world, millions of raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, chinchillas, and other animals spend their lives in wire cages, only to be killed by anal electrocution, by neck-breaking, or in gas chambers," the group says on their website.

Other celebrities who have posed for PETA's anti-fur campaign include Khloe Kardashian, Eva Mendes and Elisabetta Canalis.

Other celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian, have been criticized by the animal rights group for wearing fur.

It's a pretty picture, but I don't support PETA.

I don't wear fur and never have. Aside from the cruelty involved, it just creeps me the hell out. I can't STAND the feel of it, unless it's attached to a live animal. I don't wear leather anymore, either, but that's more because it's not practical for my life right now.

PETA lost me years ago when they handed out buckets of blood, bones, and chicken parts to CHILDREN outside of a KFC restaurant. I think I read that the parts and the bones were plastic, but still. I thought that was ridiculously over the top. There are better ways to get a message out; traumatizing children should be off the table.

Yikes...I'd really rather not. :s

I mean, of course I'm against animal cruelty, but PETA is insane and way over the top.

Yay Penelope. I grew up in Northern Ontario where you would think it would be ok, weather-wise, to wear fur. Never have. Never will. It's cruel and unnecessary. I don't support all of PETA's agenda, but I'm behind them on this issue 100%.

How about naked under a fur?

I have adopted a dog that I have owned for years and he is a sweet heart, very loyal and smart. But I love to hunt so that I can have meat to eat for the year. I cannot afford the meat cost in the year. I spend enough money at the grocery store on dry and frozen goods. PETA IS AGAINST ALL HUNTING RIGHT AND THEY WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM US.

PETA is against owning dogs too.

Love me some bird dogs, beautiful to watch them work.

Re pet foods: That's because dogs and cats are carnivores. Dogs less so, but cats are strictly carnivores.

I don't find this ad campaign sexist at at - I've always loved it's message (not crazy about the whale one, tho). Women (and men) should be happy in their own skin, and not that of another living creature. In many ways, women can identify with the plight of other creatures only wanted for their "skin". To be a feminist doesn't mean a woman has to be de-sexed. I've always thought women that wear fur and are indifferent to the suffering of animals give women and femininity a bad name. We don't have the right to inflict suffering on other creatures just because we can.

Love the "Ink not Mink" photo of Dave Navarro!
