Super Bowl XLVI: 10 Gay Things To Love About Football And The Big Game (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Super Bowl Stadium

There's a reason the Oscars are often jokingly referred to as "the gay man's Super Bowl," as much of the community responds to the Academy Awards with the same fervor that the rest of the world usually reserves for the big game.

However, it must be said that the Super Bowl isn't without its subtle gay appeal, particularly this year.

For one thing, we've got Madonna's sure-to-be-spectacular halftime performance to look forward to. Second, earlier this week Swedish clothing retailer H&M offered us a sneak peek at international soccer star David Beckham's steamy underwear commercial set to air in full during the big game-- no complaints here, except that we're insanely jealous of Victoria.

And then, of course, there's the game itself. Both the New England Patriots (based in Massachusetts) and the New York Giants hail from states that have legalized same-sex marriage, so we really couldn't ask for two more LGBT-friendly teams.

(And yes, we realize that the Giants practice in New Jersey -- a state where many are fighting the good fight when it comes to marriage equality, too).

Take a look at some gay reasons to check out Super Bowl XLVI this year:

Not everyone is happy about Madonna being selected as this year's halftime entertainment (among them her arch-nemesis Elton John), but if anyone knows how to put on a stadium show to dazzle the senses, it's the Material Girl.

The coolest thing in her was Steve Tisch's video in support of marriage equality. It's very comforting to see people in positions such as his throw caution to the wind and speak their mind in the face of discriminatory retaliation. The Giants were the first professional sports team to film an "It Gets Better" Video as well. I have incredible respect for them doing this (along with my beloved Phillies). Thanks for saying no to discrimination.

10 of my gay friends and I are having a Super Bowl party, yet I think I may be the only of my friends who actually is interested in the game. Well, I do live in New York, and the Giants are in it, but my partner thinks it's nuts that I want to watch.

Seriously, being gay doesn't mean I cannot appreciate sports. I especially love college sports, featuring my alma mater, Wisconsin.

Besides, on a great wide screen HDTV, tight ends and wide receivers can really be delightful!

I don't have a favorite team regardless but if i watch the game, it's for the game. besides there was only one person from both teams that i was liking for the wrong reasons but he was on the patriots which was bad. P.S. it's not Tom Brady

One reason NOT to watch the game...two fairly boring teams; another reason, the Puppy Bowl is on Animal Planet.

Your violent text and images are not culturally sensitive. These are the artifacts that make bullying popular in America. It represents an oppressive and threatening atmosphere.

Hmm...

It's finally hit me what these type of headlines on this site remind me of each time I read a variation of "the gayest things", or 10 gay reasons", etc. They make me think of the character Daffyd from Little Britain.

"I'm the only gay in the village."

Ah, totally! I still remember how thrown for a loop Daffyd was when a new gay moved into town. I miss that show.

That was a great character and great show. I've a couple dvds I burned of that show and really appreciate not only the humor but also the pointed...er...points in their skits and characters.

Like all great humor it hit the mark. Like watching Kids In The Hall, In Living Color and so many more.

Let's see: I could watch the Super Bowl or I could gargle with razor blades. Difficult choice.

As Suzanne Sugarbaker said, "I never *did* understand what anybody sees in watching a whole bunch of overgrown, overdressed pituitary types chasing a piece of pigskin."

Yeah, I'd definitely rather drink glass than watch football. Me and my wife are the exact opposite of sports fans. There's nothing interesting about it whatsoever. I remember when I used to sing the national anthem at sports games around the state, and I hated that I often got stuck having to stay through the duration of the game.

"A traditional homosexual", 'eh. They still make those? I didn't think they made traditional anything anymore. Whomoever "they" are.

It occurs to me as I'm writing this that wouldn't the definition of "traditional homosexual" be one who is in the closet and masquerades as a hetero complete with wife and a couple kids?

Well, I certainly agree with not doing the sports, even though I'm straight. Boring stuff, really. And my two kids are in their late twenties and I've long been divorced, twenty-five years now, and wouldn't ever marry again, not seeing anyone, don't want to no more kids, just me, that cat, some house plants, music, reading, movies, good food, drink and herb and I'm good to go.

Seriously. I guess I can say that my wife and I aren't the stereotypical lesbians, as we're both feminine and hate sports, but traditional? Come on.

Oh hecky, Beckham is, IMO, illiterate. Geez, the media thinks we gay folks are shallow and image mongers. Trust me, there are millions of smart GLBT people who are not fans of any of these media GLBT supposed icons.

All those nonsense reasons when the obvious one is those butts in those tight pants, the reason gay guys (as opposed to gay guys who like football) have been watching football.

No straight guy ever get tingly over Tom Brady in tight pants, ever. I know because everytime I have sex with a straight guy I ask him, and find out they are usually size queens and little Tommy doesn't do it for them.
