Super Bowl Foods: HOW Many Calories Do Those Add Up To? (QUIZ)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 1/2012 8:06 am Updated: 02/ 3/2012 5:19 pm

Football and commercials aside, the Super Bowl is all about the snacks. In fact, the average American will pack away nearly a day's worth of calories in front of the TV -- collectively we'll eat some 11 million pounds of chips and 1.25 billion chicken wings on Sunday alone. Altogether, those potato skins, pizza slices, beer and more give Super Bowl Sunday the dubious distinction of being among the highest calorie consumption days nation-wide, second only to the way we stuff ourselves on Thanksgiving.

Think you couldn't possibly be eating that much? The reality is that portion sizes have grown tremendously over the past 20 years. And that's assuming you can even spot a real portion size -- take our quiz to test your skill. And remember that just one serving of each of these items will tally up to more than 1,800 calories, so nosh in moderation (or try one of these healthier picks).

Why do you have to eat during a football game? Eat at the regular time.

Best idea? Skip the snacks and go for the non-lite beer.

it's one day in 365. it won't kill you to eat bad once in a while. Watch what you eat for a couple of days after. That's not to say you should eat a whole pizza. We have alot of things to worry about besides who ate the last chicken wing. :)

Forget the beer...I'd rather have a yummy chocolate snack bar with enough protein to replace a meal. These are the kind I like the best...http://white510.isagenix.com/us/en/isaleanbars.dhtml

My Grandma eats right and is 90 and still walks, lives alone and drives. Her daughter ate bad and is only 65 and blind, heavy set, has kidney failure, and diabetes. I'd rather count calories and enjoy my old age, then to rot in a hospital when I'm old. I was 210lbs and a size 22 at age 14. I decided to turn my life around and am 127lbs and a size 6 at age 28 despite having had 2 kids. I feel great, and I'm never tired like I used to be as a teenager. I might not get to live with a donut in my hand but I get to LIVE and enjoy life, and for the first time in generations of my family, I'm going to make sure my kids never have to feel the way I did growing up.

And its not just the families that are prone to weight gain, that need to watch out for their health. There are those out there that can eat anything and stay thin, but that doesn't mean your arteries aren't clogging, and your livers are not working overtime. Take care of your body, and it will take care of you. I've watched thin friends pass from preventable diseases.

Learn the truth about the food you eat - especially the difference between High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and table sugar. The Washington Post did an investigative article explaining that 1/2 of the HFCS processing plants use mercury-cell technology that leaves trace amounts of inorganic mercury in their HFCS. Food to which HFCS is added, do not state from which plants the HFCS in that food orginates or if that product can contain mercury due to the HFCS.

The FDA says the mercury found in foods containing HFCS is at levels safe for human ingestion. The FDA refuses to say at what ages and stages mercury-laden HFCS is safe to ingest in all three meals and snacks on a daily basis for over a decade or more.

Not getting a straight answer from the FDA, other than verifying that the mercury can exist in some foods containing HFCS, I went on the Internet and found a mercury-poisoning treatment clinic located in Hong Kong. They told me that mercury is a heavy toxic metal and should never be considered safe for human ingestion. Mercury can cause severe health problems and eventually death.

Our nation's population is having more health problems than any previous generations. Previous generations were not ingesting mercury-laden HFCS. Ask any non-corporate paid biologist about the problems our bodies have digesting HFCS, and you will get the real truth. Sugar and HFCS is not the same. One is more toxic than the other.

This is an article you would never have seen 10 years ago. Really sick and tired of the calorie police spoiling LIFE. If we ate like this every day, yes, not good. But SHUT UP! Do not spoil Super Bowl, Thanksgiving or Christmas!

I'm a very serious diabetic -- in danger of going blind diabetic. I used to eat carefully, but learned that over time, it was still not careful enough. I eat nothing whatsoever on that list, with the exception of salsa.... and then, I eat salsa on egg(beaters). You know something? Once I adjusted to the new diet choices, I don't feel deprived. I WOULD feel deprived, though, if I had lost all of my eyesight (I lost enough and fought two years with injections, surgeries and laser treatments to save what we did!) When my dad had diabetes, he made a different choice. He's gone now,and I can't say he left this world all that happy. Most will never have to be as strict as I am.... but I wish to high heaven I had been this strict earlier on.

Have you tried low glycemic snack bars? My favorite one is full of protein and can be substituted for a meal. It's great when you are on the run. http://white510.isagenix.com/us/en/isaleanbars.dhtml

All of this calorie counting is a complete waste of time and energy. The human body is not so frail that over eating for some special event is going to forever destroy your health. Sure junk food and snacks aren't the best eating options, but go ahead and enjoy your Super Bowl party, forget the calories, you will be alright. I promise. 2012 is going to be really rough, so enjoy what you can.

Can someone explain number 7 to me? The question asks "How much dip can you add for an additional 70 calories and 6.5 g of fat?" I answered 1 tablespoon, but their answer says 2, then the explanation says a serving is 2 tablespoons, but each tablespoon is 70 calories and 7.5 g of fat, so either their answer is wrong, or their explanation is wrong.

I also answered 1. I don't get it either, doesn't makes sense.
