Valentine's Day Candy Banned By Horace Mann School In Massachusetts (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 1/2012 5:59 pm Updated: 02/ 1/2012 5:59 pm

Lovebirds at Horace Mann School in Newton, Mass. might have to save their Valentines for after school, as the elementary school's principal has suggested handing out origami instead of sugary treats, My Fox Boston reports.

According to the report, the school's principal sent out a letter to parents asking them not to send candy with their children, as last year the overabundance of treats interfered with regular school day operations.

The letter also noted that Valentine's Day candy violates the school's food-sharing policy, as well as efforts to teach students healthy eating habits, WHDH TV reports.

Back in December, a Florida 10-year-old was arrested and charged with battery after allegedly attacking her teacher when the educator confiscated the student's halloween candy.

While the girl only reported that she merely threw a temper tantrum, the police report stated something different:

"Ms. Sanchez took the bag of candy back and put it up on a shelf, telling the defendant the candy would be given to her mother at the end of the day. The defendant then started throwing items from Ms. Sanchez' desk. At this time Ms. Sanchez called for assistance to remove the defendant from the class. While waiting for the requested assistance, Ms. Sanchez stated that she had put her arms up to block the defendant from going back behind her desk. The defendant then struck Sanchez in the stomach and side. She also stated that she would kill Ms. Sanchez and her family."

seriously.....
let me just say its a kids party, they exchange valentines, its done at the end of the day the last bit before they are sent home, they usually open their cards at home. All of you that are upset about obesity- do you also complain about the government being so large and invasive in our lives? Those of you who are complaining about religion, they do not address religion while they are passing out their little cards. My daughters school always had a party, there school was peanut free, many different religions were represented in her class and no one cared as its just valentines cards being passed out, and most of the cards came with a sticker, eraser, playdoh, few had candy and if they did it was a bite size this or a bite size that and it went off without any problems. They even made their own valentine boxes at home and brought them to school. It can be made to be educational as well, the kids are addressing and signng the cards. counting, etc

YOU DONT HEAR THE TEACHERS COMPLAINING ABOUT GETTING PAID HOLIDAYS OFF FOR CHRISTMAS,EASTER OR THANKGIVING DO YOU ? ALL OF WHICH ARE RELIGIOUSLY BASED HOLIDAYS. IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL FOR ALL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES TO TAKE THESE HOLIDAYS. IT VIOLATES THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.

I just heard a story on the radio about another teacher photographing her children for sexual puposes. Wouldnt you get a little angry? Or do you dabble in those things?

Get Real!!! Lighten Up!!! It's one day. Just limit the amount. You don't need to ban it altogether.

I agree. There should not be candy, cookies, cakes or other other food allowed to School to share with other kids. It is a shame, but there are nuts out there, that could poison the candy

Graduated in 78 and never in 12 years of school did we exchange anything but cards in school. School is no place for junk food period and since parents have abandoned providing healthy food for kids it is now up to the school. You want to feed your kid junk by all means go ahead when they get home, but keep it away from my kids at school. School is for learning, not sugar parties.

I agree. It really urks me when I receive information from the schools in their newsletter about feeding your kids healthy food and then the teachers had out candy as an incentive for doing well.

Can't do that in New Jersey anymore. I take a lot of trips to the dollar store for holiday pencils.

I'm afraid there no longer is a St. Valentine - the Church 'demoted' him years ago, as he was just a folk-lore and it is no longer a 'religious' holiday. As for banning all the Christian holidays' celebrations from public schools, that violates the US Constitution that tells government it cannot "prohibit the free exercise (of religion)". If you want to live in an Atheistic State, please pack your bags and move to Red China. Thank You.
12:11 AM on 02/03/2012
Our government does many things that the US Constitution prohibits. Grow up. You're about to be in Red China if people don't wake up.

You might have a point (though a relatively weak one) if the school itself were sponsoring on a valentine's day activity, but students individually bringing candy to school for a holiday does not interfere with separation of church and state. This is just like the fact that children are individually allowed to pray in schools as long as it does not distract from the curriculum (you know, learning- the whole reason they're in school in the first place). Students bringing in candy and the school advocating or encouraging a specific religion are two entirely different things.

It's 1 day and the school should be teaching "everything in moderation." We are going to make a nation of anorexics and bullemics. Will these kids be disciplined if they are found with contraband Valentine's Day candy? Time for some common sense to prevail.

Your right, with over 50% of kids classified as fat today we desperately need commonsense in school to prevail as parents are not providing it.

So I guess the fact that obeisity in kids is close to 50% due to negligent parenting is OK with you?

Why does a holiday party have to include junk food? We didn't have junk in schools in my day and mothers were home to cook healthy meals, I guess thats why there were few fat kids in my day and almost 50% of kids today are considered fat or obease.

When I went to school, teachers were still allowed to administer a spanking, but at least we were able to have treats at school on special days. Birthdays in class were accompanied by cupcakes - always made me a little jealous...I was a summer baby, so no school day to share cupcakes on. My mom, of course, wasn't nearly as disappointed...2 of 3 of her children were summer babies, and #3 was around Christmas when school was already out.

Valentine's Day, however, brought its own brand of anxieties...what if nobody gives me a valentine? What if the "wrong" person does? Oh, the horror! But these days, you hear so much about how many children now have allergies to nuts - how can you be sure none of the candy they come in contact with won't have nuts in it? That's a greater worry to me than the detriment to study caused by sugar highs. As much as I hate to say it, that principal may have the right idea in the long run.

I see the same two sided moaning is going on. Take it away, your bad let the kids be kids. You don't take it away and the schools aren't doing enough to keep my kid fit or keep them under control. Typical. How about you don't fall for another man made holiday to drain your money.
