5 Foods You Should Never Eat Again (And What To Eat Instead)

First Posted: 02/02/2012 6:02 am EST   Updated: 08/29/2012 12:10 am EDT

Heading into fall, as the weather grows colder, it's easy to fall off the exercise bandwagon. Weight gain is a common problem as the idea of heading out for a jog, swim or bike ride becomes less enticing. Huff/Post50 spoke with Kevin Haag, owner of K2 Performance Training, a fitness center in New Jersey, about simple food choices that help stave off those extra pounds.

"People have to pay a little more attention when they get older," Haag said. "Every year over 50, the rule 'you are what you eat' applies a little more." Check out our slideshow below for five foods Haag suggests you should never eat again -- and some delicious, healthy alternatives.

  • Do Not Eat: Fried Food

Fried food is loaded with fat and calories while offering zero nutritional value. It's a lose-lose! Sure, fries and chips TASTE good, but healthier items also taste good. Just say no to the deep fried items on your menu. You'll be thinner, healthier and won't have greasy fingers.

  • Try This Instead: Broiled

If you simply must have a French fry, then make them at home in your oven. Use sweet potatoes, as these are a more complex carbohydrate. Cut into matchsticks, drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil along with a dash of salt, then place in your oven on broil. Turn every five minutes until the fries are tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.

  • Do Not Eat: White Bread

White bread products have minimal nutritional value and are quickly converted by your body into sugar. So you may as well eat a cupcake. Even breads that are technically wheat, but are as soft and smooth as white bread, should be avoided. Don't be afraid to discard the bread from your sandwich or to push away that bread basket. Your waist will shrink and you'll lose that bloated feeling that high carbohydrate meals give you.

  • Try This Instead: Sprouted Grain Bread

If you must have bread, then stick with sprouted. Sprouted grain bread is a lot easier on your digestion and is packed full of nutrients. Two delicious brands are Food For Life's Ezekiel bread, and Manna Organics. Sprouted grain breads are often kept in the freezer section since they don't contain preservatives to prolong shelf life.

  • Do Not Eat: Creamy Salad Dressing

You were so good to order a salad, but then canceled out the low-cal benefits by drenching the salad in fattening creamy dressing. Just a few tablespoons of creamy dressing contain more than 20 grams of fat and hundreds of calories.

  • Try This Instead: Vinegar Dressing

Vinegar-based dressings pack amazing flavor in with minimal fat and calories. You can even mix your own dressing at home. Take high quality vinegar, fresh lemon juice, salt and pepper, your choice of dried herbs, and a bit of olive oil.

  • Do Not Eat: White Rice

Just like white bread, white rice has minimal nutritional value, and the glycemic load will quickly prime your body for storing fat.

  • Try This Instead: Brown Rice

Brown rice has three times the amount of fiber, more B vitamins as well as other nutrients and will keep you feeling fuller for longer. That should be enough to convince you to swap your large pile of white rice out for a small pile of brown rice.

  • Do Not Eat: White Sugar

Sugar and high fructose corn syrup are the epitome of anti-fitness food. Nothing will destroy your progress, expand your waist and plummet your energy levels like sugar. If you only take away one do-not-eat food from this slideshow, please let it be sugar.

  • Try This Instead: Fruit

Don't turn to artificial sweeteners to get your sweet fix, instead turn to nature's wholesome source of sugar: fruit. Eat organic fruit that is seasonal and locally grown. Stay away from dried fruit and fruit juices, as these are high in simple calories.

I think the idea is to replace sweets with fruit.

Lists like this really make me angry. There are no foods that should be on the "never" list. This breeds guilt and cravings and is ultimately counter productive. These are foods to moderate. There are no good foods and bad foods.

Hmm, White rice.....anyone ever seen Sushi with brown rice?
10:31 AM on 02/07/2013
Whole Foods makes sushi with brown rice for the "health-conscious" (i.e. health fad) nuts. But really - in 1 roll of sushi, you are not eating that much rice. And unless you eat a tone of rice, I really dont think this is an issue.

But Whole Foods is one place you can find brown rice sushi. Some other "whole foods" like stores like Wegman's or Amish Market (in NYC at least) sells brown rice sushi.

I agree - I dont think the rice in 1 or 3 rolls of Sushi matters much - It just struck me as odd that down here or even in Sushi places I had visited in the US/Canada that no-one had used this as a marketing ploy yet....I havent been to NYC for a while tho.....

"5 foods you should never eat" is a really sensationalized headline. It's not like anybody is going to keel over and die, or even develop a serious health problem, if they eat these foods every once in a while combined with a regular healthy diet.

The idea of avoiding the white foods is not new in this article, and it is a good guideline. That said you will pry my sticky rice from my cold dead hands.

I don't eat many sweets or foods with sugar in them, I haven't had rice in eons, I was raised on whole-grain bread, I stay away from fried foods (and only rarely to I splurge on chips or fried chicken). But my weakness is french fries. But I figure, since I usually eat so cleanly otherwise, I'm allowed to have some fries now and again ;)

Gluten-based foods cause me chronic pain, so my quality of life improves when I skip out on those foods.

I love this comment more than I can say. What is the point of living? To enjoy life!

I manage to stay away from fried foods the majority of the time, except the occasional french fry from In-n-Out. The white bread, white rice, and white sugar are my next by list to tackle. I love brown rice, don't mind eating whole grain breads, and will start doubling up on the fruit intake.

For people that MUST have their fried potatoes.... I found that if I microwaved the taters for about 5 minutes before cooking them, I could use a ton LESS grease and it doesnt affect the flavor at all.

the hubby was a fried tater eater for years, decades.... i tried to find healtier ways to make them where he couldnt detect they'd been tampered with : ) it worked.

Have you tried stevia? It doesn't have the weird chemical taste of the artificial sweeteners and is harmless.

familiar with many tips. I forgot about previous Ezekiel bread recommendations because I barely see it in stores. Fried food is the hardest for me to give up because other methods of cooked/boiled/steamed meat do not taste done enough, and often baked items lack the tasty skin that companies remove.
