Cinnamon Challenge: Carmen Ana Rodriguez, Principal, On Leave After Failing To Stop Dangerous Fad (VIDEO)

Cinnamon Test

Carmen Ana Rodriguez, Clinton Avenue School Principal, has been put on leave after witnessing her Connecticut students taking the "cinnamon challenge" and failing to stop it, the New Haven Register reports.

According to the report, the "cinnamon challenge" is the newest, potentially dangerous, teen fad where the youngsters attempt to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon. Since the spice is highly absorbant, the result usually entails gasping for air, coughing spells and in some cases, vomiting. The report also states that doctors say attempting to swallow the cinnamon especially dangerous for students with asthma.

In a letter sent out to parents following the incident, school officials note the challenge's danger:

"The activity can have harmful impacts on children, particularly children with asthma, as the cinnamon absorbs the saliva in the mouth andthroat making it difficult or impossible to swallow and may result in breathing issues andother adverse physical reactions."

The problem is so widespread, Pottstown Middle School in Pottstown, Pa., banned "open-toed boots" to combat cinnamon smuggling into the classroom, The Mercury reports.

Student Christina Lan told WTNH TV that all the warnings only add fuel to the fire. "Its like when you tell them not to do it, they just want to do it more," she told the station.

Thousands of videos of people attempting the challenge are available on YouTube.

God, let teens have their fun!! At least it's cinnamon and not meth or coke. Adults seriously need to stop trying to control EVERYTHING that they don't agree with. Sure, it's stupid, but it's pretty entertaining. It won't get you sick, much less kill you.

HOW do kids think these fads up?!?!

As a former cooking teacher, I turned around one day a few years ago, and saw some students beginning to do this challenge. Knowing that cinnamon is from the bark of a tree, and therefore all fiber, I knew that it would remain dry in the mouth and cause possible aspiration into the lungs. I immediately put a stop to it. It pays to hire scientifically trained teachers.

You know... I'm sure my parents and all you older people out there saying how stupid this is did things 10 times as worse as eating a spoon of cinnamon. Just a guess but I have a feeling it is pretty accurate.

These kids voluntraly attempt to eat a sppn full of cinnamon. Hmmmmm .......?

Good idea. Let them.
A legal way to "thin out the herd" and separate the idiots from the other kids that want to, you know ...., live, think, grow, that kind of stuff.
These look like teens. They know better.

Yea I'm sure the principal went to medical school to know the dangers so of course she should be put on leave. What a crock! The fad which has been around for years has been tried many times over both on tv and in living rooms all without a publicized documented incident.

Just a symptom of people being too sensitive and cautious.

Yet another case where an innocent substance is misused by idiots. What's next, a full-bore coffee cake ban? Shuttered Cinnabon carts? Removal of those little shakers at Starbucks? My god, let's imprison the entire McCormick family!
