Facebook Down? Service Disruption Hits Social Network

UPDATE: By 3 p.m., regular service had mostly returned. Down Right Now upgraded the site's status to "Possible Service Trouble."

On Thursday, a day after Facebook filed for its $5 billion IPO, a service disruption apparently struck the social network.

According to a status report from Down Right Now, users began experiencing a "likely service disruption" around 1 p.m.

Around the same time, Down For Everyone Or Just Me displayed conflicting reports that the site was alternately up and then down, then up again.

Users took to Twitter to report problems accessing Facebook.

"THIS IS NOT AN EXERCISE! FACEBOOK DOWN!! I REPEAT!! FACEBOOK DOWN! PLEASE STAY CALM AND PROCRASTINATE ELSEWHERE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE," wrote user @Crapules.

"Everyone, Facebook's not down. They just entered their quiet period. They'll be back online after the IPO," joked @cjoh.

facebook been acting crazy all day, whole layout is bizarre and it only hald loads, never saw anything like it, dowwn since this morning on both my laptops.

I didn't have any problems on Thursday, but since last night around 9:30 p.m., Facebook has been intermittently down.

I did not have any trouble at Facebook on Thursday or Friday until about 10PM (or a bit earlier) ~ Down Right Now says Facebook is up, but it is not up for me and has not been since it suddenly kicked me off.

All of Stony Brook University has no Facebook! However, keep in mind we are on our own private server. I don't know if that has an effect on it :( (Thanks for visiting us last year Ms. Arianna Huffington)

dark cloud forming at the horizon.. yesterday the ipo announcement, today fb is down. there's only one conclusion - is fb doomed?!
