Syria Crisis: Russia Will Not Stop Arms Sales To Assad Regime

Syria Russia Arms Sales

BEIRUT (AP) - Russia will not stop selling arms to Syria, a top defense official said Thursday, as Moscow stands by its longtime ally despite mounting international condemnation over the Syrian regime's bloody crackdown on a 10-month-old uprising.

Russia's Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said his country is not violating any international obligations by selling weapons to Damascus.

"As of today there are no restrictions on our delivery of weapons," he told journalists in Russia, according to the country's state news agencies. "We must fulfill our obligations and this is what we are doing."

Moscow has been one of Syria's most powerful allies -€” along with Iran - as Syria tries to crush the revolt against President Bashar Assad. The U.N. estimates that more than 5,400 people have been killed in the government crackdown.

Moscow's stance is motivated in part by its strategic and defense ties, including weapons sales, with Syria. But Russia also rejects what it sees as a a world order dominated by the U.S. Last month, Russia reportedly signed a $550-million deal to sell combat jets to Syria.

U.N. ambassadors this week are trying to overcome Russia's opposition to a draft resolution at the Security Council calling for Assad to surrender power. Moscow says it would veto the draft because it believes it opens the way for eventual international military action.

Wiam Wahhab, a pro-Syrian Lebanese politician, met Tuesday with Assad in Damascus.

"I found him relaxed and sure. He is confident in the Russian position," Wahhab told the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar in an interview published Thursday.

Wahhab said Assad told him he will end the uprising, because "the cost of chaos is much worse than the cost of decisiveness."
As the diplomatic push continues, however, Syrian activists Thursday marked the 30-year anniversary of the Hama massacre.

The three-week assault on the rebellious city of Hama leveled entire neighborhoods and killed thousands of people in one of the most notorious massacres in the modern Middle East.

The attack was carried out in 1982 when Assad's father, Hafez, was president -€” and it has become a rallying cry for some Syrian protesters who want to topple the family dynasty now, once and for all.

On Thursday, many of the city's residents were observing a general strike to mark the anniversary, said Ahmed Jimejmi, a resident. Protests were planned, he said, but security forces flooded the streets in anticipation.

Hundreds of troops and security forces were in the city, including Al-Assi square, and troops set up flying checkpoints, asking for people's IDs.

"There is a checkpoint every 100 meters," he said.

Activists painted two streets in Hama red to symbolize blood, and threw red dye in the waters of Hama's famous and ancient water wheels.

Graffiti on the walls read: "Hafez died, and Hama didn't. Bashar will die, and Hama won't."

Hundreds of troops and security forces were in Hama on Thursday, closing off public squares and setting up checkpoints.

"There is a checkpoint every 100 meters," said Ahmed Jimejmi, a Hama resident.

Graffiti on the walls read: "Hafez died, and Hama didn't. Bashar will die, and Hama won't."

Assad's father, Hafez, ordered the scorched-earth assault on Hama 30 years ago to put down an uprising against his rule. Amnesty International has claimed that 10,000-25,000 were killed, though conflicting figures exist and the Syrian government has never made an official estimate.

For the next two decades, until his death, Hafez Assad ruled uncontested and the massacre was seared into the minds of Syrians.

Now, as the country faces a far larger revolt against Bashar Assad, the U.N. estimates more than 5,400 people have been killed in the government crackdown.

Also Thursday, a top defense official said Russia will not stop selling arms to Syria as Moscow stands by its longtime ally despite mounting international condemnation over the Syrian regime's bloody crackdown.

Let's talk about an argument fallacy. Using the excuse "they do, so can I" is called an argument fallacy. It's intellectually dishonest. Furthermore, the US does not sell weapons to countries who kill their own people bu the thousand, so the comparison is still inaccurate. Russia is not doing anything illegal, it's just immoral.

We sold weapons to Iraq!
02:45 PM on 02/04/2012
yes.we did.and to Iran as well.during the 8 years war.a million dead on both sides.we kept both countries busy at war.a total violation of international norms to support two countries at war.even the Germans during the second world war did not violate such norms.they were both very powerful countries.imagine if they were at peace and had a strong alliance.Israel would be in big trouble then.so keeping them busy was a good option.thanks to Dr.Kissinger.

Of course we do! The USA is still the Arsenal Of Democracy which FDR publicized in the 1930's. Only then it was cash and carry. Now we deliver. It was good business then. It still is. So we should complain about Russia following our filthy capitalist pig example? LOOL!
Maybe, instead, we should follow the USSR example and sell to the Syrian revolutionaries. World War III, here we come.

Yes! So the USA supports either a revolution in Syria or government supression in Bahrain. American Tradition (and Saudi approval) says it will be the government in Bahrain. Not that it makes a bit a difference to our industrial complex. To them it is all the same: $$$.

It seems that a new military alliance is forming with Russia at it's core that's opposing another military alliance with America at its core. I'm not surprised that Russia is considering the production of 100 Mton nukes, and we're considering a missile defense system in Poland. We should harden all of our nuclear power plants against an EMF attack that could override their electronics and cause them to melt down. Our electric power grid needs EMF protection too. Our automobiles need to protect their chips from EMF as well. This world gets crazier and crazier.

People would be surprised to know that the United States, Great Britian, France, Germany and many more have been suppling arms to many over many years! The US is the top arms supplier in the world! It brings in billions! Eisenhower warned of military industry supply conglomerate. We should be paying more attention.

That's what lies ahead of Syria under the guide of "humanitarian intervention by NATO":
"This is not the first report of serious, systematic abuses in Libya. In July, Human Rights Watch accused NATO-backed rebels of widespread looting, arson and abuse of civilians. Throughout the latter part of 2011, there were numerous reports of black migrant workers being detained without charges, tortured and even executed en masse."

The problem is that America and Britain have both sold arms to questionable regimes in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel. (And yes, I said Israel, their treatment of the Palestians is questionable.) For Russia to do the same to Syria so they can prop up the despotic ruler there is morally wrong but not illegal, nor is it anything that hasn't been done before. If the West truly wants peace across the region we must be prepared to accept that we did wrong in some places and can't claim the moral high ground. Having done that, we would then be in a much stronger position to try and help Syria become a functional member of the international community.

We stopped selling arms to Iraq when it was using them against its people, Saudi Arabia and Israel are NOT killing hundreds of their own civilians every day. There is the difference.
03:05 PM on 02/04/2012
yes.Isarel is not killing its people.it is just oppressing the actual inhabitants of the country.Israel is a Democracy, yes, for the Settlers ,not the Natives.meaning a Jew from the Ukraine who migrated to Isarel can vote and has more rights than the palestinian who was born and raised in Jericho.
we did not stop selling weapons to iraq because of that.we stopped when the ian-iraq war ended.because Saddam's next move was to invade Kuwait.
as for Saudi Arabia,as long as they keep the flow of oil going, the monarchy can do whatever it wishes to and the U.S will look the other way.it is far from a democracy.
