Jose Camacho, Murder Suspect, Extradited From Mexico To Stand Trial For '01 Slaying
Schaumburg, Ill. police will finally be able to prosecute an 11-year-old murder case, after their suspect was extradited from Mexico into custody Thursday.
Schaumburg police issued an arrest warrant for Camacho on May 30, 2001, five days after the body of Hanover Park resident Flavio Venancio, 28, was found in a pond near the Schaumburg train station, NBC Chicago reports. An autopsy determined that Venancio had drowned after being stabbed and beaten, according to a release.
Schaumburg police believe Camacho killed Venancio during an alcohol-fueled argument, according to the Associated Press. Local police worked with the FBI, the U.S. State Department and officials in Mexico to apprehend Camacho, who police believe fled the state, then the country shortly after Venancio's death.
Camacho was taken into custody by Mexican authorities in September 2011, following a federal arrest warrant issued in December 2009 that added unlawful flight to avoid prosecution to his charges, WGN reports. A bond court hearing at the Rolling Meadows Courthouse is scheduled for 9 a.m.
