Josh Hamilton Alcohol Relapse: Rangers Star Confirms Drinking Report

Josh Hamilton Relapse

STEPHEN HAWKINS   02/ 3/12 07:37 PM ET  AP

ARLINGTON, Texas. — Josh Hamilton shed no tears, used no prepared statement as he apologized and shared few details about his relapse with alcohol. Still, it was clear he was upset by what he had done.

The Texas Rangers slugger and recovering drug addict said he had "three or four" drinks during dinner at a Dallas restaurant and bar Monday and continued drinking later that night.

"Things happened that me, personally, I'm not proud of after I drank, and they are personal and are being handled as that," he said Friday during a news conference at the ballpark called specifically to address the incident. "Knowing this was going to get out in social media, Twitter, people get excited. There was no pictures taken of me having a beer with somebody or anything like that, but I did take pictures with people."

Hamilton didn't elaborate or give any real indication about what happened.

Hamilton was suspended for more than three years for drug and alcohol use while in the Tampa Bay organization. The former No. 1 overall draft pick missed the entire 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons, but has become one of the best players in baseball on a team that has won the last two American League pennants. He was the AL MVP in 2010.

The 30-year-old Hamilton said his latest actions "hurt a lot of people very close to me." He closed his eyes at one point and seemed to force a smile another time. He didn't take questions.

Without being specific, Hamilton said he had a "weak moment" that stemmed from "personal reasons" involving a family member. He said he walked to a restaurant to have dinner and ended up "ordering a drink, and probably had three or four drinks"

Hamilton said he did not take any drugs, and had no thoughts of doing so. He said he has been tested for drugs twice since Monday, part of his normal mandated routine.

This is Hamilton's second known alcohol-related relapse in three years. Both came during the offseason, and this one has put on hold talks with the Rangers about a contract extension.

In January 2009, he drank to excess in a bar in Tempe, Ariz. He apologized for that a few months later when a dozen or so pictures were posted online showing Hamilton taking shots off the bar, and dancing and hugging several young women. He said then that he had been sober since October 2005.

Hamilton and general manager Jon Daniels said the outfielder will meet soon with Major League Baseball doctors and counselors in New York for an evaluation in his continued recovery.

"My life in general is based on making the right choices, everything as far as my recovery, as far as my baseball goes, it's all based around my relationship with the Lord," Hamilton said. "And I look at it like that, you all know how hard I play on the field and I give it everything I absolutely have. When I don't do that off the field, I leave myself open for a weak moment."

After having a few drinks with dinner, Hamilton called Ian Kinsler to come hang out with him.

Hamilton said Kinsler didn't know he had been drinking, and that he never had a drink in front of his teammate, even when they left before the restaurant closed and went to another place nearby for 25-30 minutes. Then Kinsler drove him back to where he was staying not far away.

Though Hamilton told Kinsler he was not going anywhere else, Hamilton said he later returned to the place they had left and had more drinks.

Daniels was asked if he was concerned that the incident was more than just Hamilton having a few drinks. The GM referred to Hamilton saying that alcohol had led the outfielder to some things he wasn't proud of.

"I don't know. I wasn't there," said Daniels, speaking on a conference call. "That's how Josh wants to address those things right now."

In Twitter posts Friday, Hamilton's wife, Katie, wrote: "Truly appreciate all the encouraging & supportive tweets we've been getting. God is Faithful and forgives- so thankful that you all are ... Showing us such love and encouragement during this time."

When the Rangers acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds in December 2007, they were aware of Hamilton's off-the-field problems. He is tested for drug use three times a week and has had an accountability partner to support him in his recovery – though that job is now vacant.

Assistant hitting coach Johnny Narron's primary role was to support the former No. 1 overall draft pick, but Narron left the Rangers in November for Milwaukee.

The Rangers announced last month that Hamilton's father-in-law had been hired as a staff special assistant to be the accountability partner, but Michael Dean Chadwick has since decided against accepting that position because of "family considerations."

Daniels said the team was close to hiring someone for the job, a process that was already in the final stages before the latest incident. He said an announcement could come next week.

But Daniels said such a person likely wouldn't have been with Hamilton during the offseason when he was home with his family, as was the case this week.

Hamilton can become a free agent after this season and had been talking to the Rangers about a contract extension.

"It would be nice if it was talking about a contract but we'll put that on the back burner for a while," Hamilton said before walking out of the room. Daniels concurred that he had agreed with Hamilton's agent, Mike Moye, that contract talks would be put on hold. Daniels said there was no timetable for resuming them.

While Daniels said Hamilton's relapse created a number of emotions, including disappointment, the GM said the overriding concern was for Hamilton and his family. Hamilton and his wife have four daughters, the youngest born last summer.

"For everybody who I have hurt, for everybody – fans, kids, people who have addictions and look up to me – apologize to you," he said. "When you're doing this, you don't mean to hurt anybody. You only think you're hurting yourself, but as I know, you're hurting a lot of people."

"He is tested for drug use three times a week."
He didn't pick up the pipe. He hasn't since MLB allowed him to return to baseball. THAT is the story. Two minor slips with alcohol over the last 5 1/2 years puts him in the 85th percentile of people in recovery for alcoholism. No drug use for 5 1/2 years after kicking a ctrack cocaine habit puts him the 99th percentile for crack addiction recovery.
He has a stronger and more effective program than nearly everyone at a NA or CA meeting. He has better results than most everyone who has ever walked through a door for an AA meeting.
Everyone needs to get off of his back.

Only when he wants to stop using drugs himself will it really work. Others constantly watching him can not stop him

The guy is a gazillionaire and if he wants to be a drunk so be it, as long as he doesn't drive, punch someone out or abuse women and stays within the law. I could not care less.

So being welathy means he should just do what he wants even though he has a serious disease like alcoholism? Once an alcoholic, always a recovering addict. The disease never leaves you, it's like having cancer for the rest of your life. I bet his wife, and four young children care even though you could "care less." You seem like a real great guy...you comment on articles you could "care less" about. Unreal.

Actually - the disease might not leave you, but there are some great medicine for alcoholism now - it is just that north america has its head in the sand (or somewhere else) and still thinks a 1935 spirtual program is the only thing to save an alcoholic. AA's self quoted success rate is 5%. Time to wake up america and look at things like the Sinclair Method (80% success rate), topiramate and nalmefene (to be approved in Europe this year) I hope this guy finally gets the appropriate medical advice.

Guess Jesus took a cat nap! Or perhaps the Son was working on something really important.

Scahill . . . the cool thing about God is that He doesn't make you do anything you don't want to do. He simply asks that you follow Him, and the fact that He watches over you does not mean that He will orchestrate your life. What He does do is give a man or woman a set of principles that will guarantee an abundant and successful life (don't tie abundant and successful to paycheck size). God made us human and that humanity is fraught with defects. We can't be perfect, but we can try our best to be what He would like for us to be . . . people who are honorable and decent. Will we fail? You bet, but God doesn't want our failures to be the bedrock of who and what we are. Just like the fathers we have on earth, Our Heavenly Father knows we are going to fail, but when we do, he is always there to look us lovingly in the eyes and say, "you are still mine and I love you without condition. He will figuratively pick us up when we fail to meet His standards, but the decision to keep our eyes on Him and be what He wants us to be is ours and ours alone. Sure . . . Josh had a weak moment and succumbed to it, but the sum of what a person really is cannot and should not be underscored by a small handful of failures.

I say leave Josh alone. If he performs and what he consumes doesn't effect his play then it's his business. There are people who go to work still drunk from the night before, and I don't hear anyone making an issue of that. Josh's problem wasn't with alcohol, but with Crystal Meth, and Cocaine. I knew he would continue to have problems, when his wife stated that she had to take the kids and follow the team bus so that he wouldn't "go out and cop". Anyone who's ever dealt with someone with this problem will tell you, that following them will not work. That unless that individual is ready to stop on their own, your waisting your time. But Josh is a great player, who's going to have bumps in the road. Let his play dictate how we deal with him, not his personal life.

AA has been taken over by big alcohol. the program is all diluted and distorted. I often said if Bill W was to walk into an AA meeting today in NYC he would not know where he was if it were not for the 12 and 12 hanging up on the wall. AA these days is anything anonymous. the best way to stay sober is don't pick up the first drink! That is the one that gets the alcoholic drunk it has been proven with MRI brain scan the brain of an alcoholic lights up in all sorts of strange ways just after consuming 1 oz of 80 proof liquor.

Nothing more to it than what the story says in this area of Texas. The guy has had a lot of trouble with addiction. Crack. Anything else he could get his hands on. Alcohol. So he's on a very short leash now with MLB. He has guardians and sober buddies practically around the clock. Someone else controls his money and how much he can spend. He blew through something like $100k on drugs once in just a few weeks. He's had lots of publicity here. Gifted player, but he has the addiction bug something awful, and it's darn near ruined his life.

the big deal is that he is a recovering addict.....he will always be recovering. there is no cure for alcoholism. the big deal is he has a wife and four young children at home relying on him to be a dad and a husband. the bid deal is he could lose his entire career and this time forever, not just 3 yrs. unlike marijuana, alcohol has sever withdrawal symptoms associated with it. forever. ask his wife and family if they think this is no big deal.
