Wrong-number Call Helps Ohio Woman In Emergency

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — A woman who called the wrong number when she suffered a stroke still found help a couple of time zones away.

Loretta Smith, of Cuyahoga Falls near Akron, felt her right side go numb and fell to the floor at her home last weekend.

The 70-year-old Smith said she was able to grab the phone with her left hand and thought she was calling her son. Instead, she was one digit off and reached a man in the Denver area who was originally from northeast Ohio and had kept the same number after he moved.

"It was a woman, and she said `I may be having a stroke,'" said Kenny Crater, 28, a sculpture major at Metropolitan State University in Denver.

Crater asked for her name and address and offered to get help. His 911 call was answered by Broomfield, Colo., police, who transferred his call to Cuyahoga Falls.

Smith was taken to Summa Western Reserve Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls, where it was determined that she had suffered a mini-stroke, said Dr. Joseph Nienaltowski.

Smith said Crater saved her life. "I want this kid to be praised to high heaven," she said.

Crater said Smith had done her part, too. "I do not feel like I have done anything special," he said.

"I didn't save her," Crater said. "She found me."

Progressive and liberal, just like Jesus Christ.

Crater doesn't think he's a hero, but in this day and age of common detachment, he could easily have said, "I think you have the wrong number" and hung up.

Obviously, they were connected in a past life. She must have done a good deed to the man in a past life, and he was just returning the favor. It's good Karma in the works!

Such a heartwarming story. He did a great job and glad to see she is doing well too. The woman in this story lives in the same town as I do..I am a recent transplant from New York and have been amazed at how nice everyone here is.. It doesn't surprise me that Mr. Crater answered his phone. Great job.

I think I'll end my web-crawling for the day with this feel-good story! With everything that is wrong in this world, sometimes all it takes is a good heart-warming story like this to help restore faith in people! Good night, sleep tight and God bless us, everyone!

Wouldn't God have assisted her in dialing the right number in the first place, so her son could come over?

Right. God wasn't looking out for her. AT&T was.

NOPE !! God does things HIS way not MAN'S way. The ending of the story is she lived right? That alone is a God given. At my age I try to stay by a phone or have access to one and I pray to God if I can't dial 911, please give me the strength to dial 0.

He sure was. That person could have just hung up on her, but He cared enough to help. God's people care. People that don't believe in God just criticize...

That is a really good feel good story. Im glad that she was able to be found and helped. I would have done the exact same thing. Great Job Kenny! and Feel Better Loretta!

There are so many good people all around us. They go through their days never causing problems or drawing attention to themselves. When disaster occurs, they step up without a thought; when they are lauded for their actions, they always say the same thing--hey, I'm no hero! They really don't see themselves as being anyone special because they are just being who they are--decent, caring, unselfish human beings, like this young man. It makes me happy to know he's in the world!
