The Springfield Baptist Church
in Augusta, Georgia, officially founded in 1793, is the country's oldest African-American church of any denomination. Symbolically, the church stands as a testament to the independent spirit of African-Americans during the era of U.S. slavery. Constructively, the church marks the origination of the Georgia Republican Party and the founding location of Morehouse College
, an institution noted for producing numerous black leaders. In addition to traditional prayer services, the church hosts religious events
, such as Sunday school and PHAT (Preaching, Healing, Anointed Teaching) Tuesday. In 1982, the United States Department of the Interior listed the church on the National Register of Historic Places.
