NV Caucus Results Driven By Conservatives

ALAN FRAM and JENNIFER AGIESTA   02/04/12 10:58 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney rode overwhelming backing from Mormons and his best performance yet among conservatives to his emphatic victory Saturday in Nevada's Republican presidential contest, according to preliminary results of a poll of voters entering the caucuses.

Buoyed by near monolithic support from Mormons, the former Massachusetts governor won a broad and deep victory. He was the clear winner among every age group except for those under 30, with all but the lowest-earning voters and across all levels of education.

"We were just talking on our way over here about how great it is to be excited about the political process again," said Leanne Fertig, a 58-year-old Clark County school district employee. "It's due to Mitt Romney. We have a candidate we can believe in."

Romney captured the votes of just over half of conservatives, more than doubling the number who backed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an ominous result for the man who has emerged as Romney's chief rival.

In the four previous states that have held GOP presidential contests, Romney had won no more than about 4 in 10 conservative votes, in New Hampshire and Florida. Underscoring the importance of the Mormon vote, Romney's support Saturday among conservatives who are not Mormon was in that same 4 in 10 range.

For the first time, Romney took half the votes of tea party supporters, with Mormons once again pushing his margin higher than before.

One in 4 voters Saturday was Mormon, Romney's religion, and 9 in 10 of them backed him. They provided him with more than 4 in 10 of his votes on Saturday. Each of his rivals received 1 in 10 or less of their votes from Mormons.

Romney won among all non-Mormon voters as well, though by a narrower margin, capturing around 4 in 10 of their votes. Romney won among born-again and evangelical Christians – a group he has usually struggled with – prevailed among Protestants and carried a slight majority of Catholics.

Gingrich and Texas Rep. Ron Paul each took about 1 in 4 of Saturday's non-Mormon voters.

Romney won decisively among the nearly half of voters saying they most wanted a candidate who can defeat President Barack Obama in this fall's election. He won about three quarters of their votes – four times as many as went to Gingrich, his nearest competitor on that question.

Romney also won among people seeking a contender with the right experience and with strong moral character.

Yet on the moral character question, his backing from Mormons was key. Among non-Mormons seeking that quality, Paul was the big winner.

Just over half said the economy was their chief issue as they decided which contender to back, and 6 in 10 of them picked Romney, who has trumpeted his business background at a time when the nation's job market has limped slowly in the right direction. He also won among the 1 in 3 who named the federal deficit as their top concern.

The evening seemed like a disappointing one for Paul, who spent nearly as much as Romney in Nevada on campaign advertising and had hoped to prosper in a state that is home to many with libertarian views.

Paul triumphed among only a handful of groups of voters. He won among the 1 in 5 independents, among the 1 in 5 who said they were seeking a candidate who was a true conservative and with the small number who said they are not members of a religion. He shared the lead with people under age 30 and with those earning less than $30,000 annually.

The survey was conducted for AP and the television networks by Edison Research as voters arrived at 25 randomly selected caucus sites in Nevada. The survey involved interviews with 1,584 caucus-goers and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

In a state with over a million voters it is sad that a very few thousand zealots are thought to speak for the whole state and a paltry sampling of real opinion they provide. The whole turn out is not 10% of the total of Obama's email list and far less than the total of his contributors and volunteers.

For all the media hype, Obama will take the state handily in November where the vote actually counts.

So Mormons are only voting for Romney because he's a Mormon like blacks only voted for Obama because he was black, right?

And turnout was down from four years ago.
No surprise that right-leaning AP would skip over the obvious enthusiasm gap in thier report.

To all of the people seemingly convinced that Obama is a one term President - I don't believe you are as confident as you sound. It's true, Obama has had a very rough first term so far running through the obstacle course put in place by Republicans. I'm tired of reading the nonsense such as, "Obama = failed" or whatever. You folks need to remember the economic downturn began under the policies of Bush around 2007.

You're throwing a party, inviting all your like minded friends, then going around and asking their opinions, thereby confirming that the tide is against Obama.

I don't know, but it shocks me. So many hard working people are voting against their very interests. A constant state of fear is powerful with some people. Ask Vader.

I saw part of a story saying that there were caucuses that opened at 9, but closed an hour later instead of going until 1 pm as advertised. Any more information on this? Someone organized to hijack this or what?

"What's the Matter with Kansas" was published several years ago. Since Nevada seems to be a Tea Party stronghold, watch for a sequal soon: "WTH with Nevada?"

Hey, these are just the Repub caucuses. The Democrats had theirs two weeks ago and nominated President Barack Obama. If the Democratic party in Nevada fields strong candidates they have a good chance to win.

Anybody that votes for any of the Republican candidates when their concern is the economy and jobs is voting against the economy and jobs. The deficit in this country is due to the Republicans and Romney has proved he has no idea how to create jobs. Why don't they just admit that they don't like a black Dem in the White House?

Hello, once more, Tennessee! The answer to your rhetorical question: ......because it is unfashionable and not PC today---even for Republicans---to admit racism. With the economy slowly improving, following Boy George and his crew wrecking it, there is no tangible reason to so desperately desire Obama out of office.

Of course, some neo-cons will argue that it is not race at all, but, rather, the President's "socialist" economics, where, obviously, The Big O is just slightly left of center, no where near being a socialist. The fact that he disappoints me, an ardent leftist, should be a test case that he is anything but a socialist. Take care....

By voting for deficit increase he has made the situation worse, and further eroded the value of our currency. He lied about bringing the troops home, attacked Libya without congressional approval, and is allowing the C.I.A. to start conflict in Africa, which is also increasing our national debt.It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats or the color of skin, but it has everything to do with the integrity of the candidate.I am voting for the sane one,Ron Paul.

I am listen to Ron Paul right now and I have come to a conclusion, yet I am sorry to say that this man is crazy and very dangerous with all the notion in his head that this stuff will work. He is crazy just listen to him rally on about the government and yet he gets a government check each month and will get angry as hell if it stops. He is so greedy that he got his son a job in government. He made his money off medicare and the old people by overcharging them. After he got cutt off from stealing he went to Washington to fight back and he's been doing this every since. How sick is this...sick man.

You and I can agree that Ron Paul's ideas are nutty, but you are either very misinformed or flat out lying about him in the rest of you post. He has refused his government pension, has paid into social security, not the Congressional retirement fund and he has never accepted a medicare payment in his life as a doctor. If a patient could not afford to pay and had medicare or no insurance he either provided his services for free or at a very greatly reduced rate. So call his ideas nutty and I'll agree, but why bother making all the other stuff up?

Goodafternoon libs, now for the rest of the story:

Saturday, February 04, 2012

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 26% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -14 (see trends).

In a potential Election 2012 matchup, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is at 45% while President Obama earns 44%. This is the first time in any poll that Santorum has led the president.

just saying....
