PANAMA CITY — Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, who was toppled by a 1989 American invasion and later convicted of drug running, was transferred from prison to a hospital on Sunday because of extreme hypertension, health officials said.

Health Minister Franklin Vergara said Noriega's blood pressure was very high, nearly leading to a stroke. The former military strongman arrived to a hospital, and doctors saw signs of a possible brain hemorrhage.

Further X-rays and evaluations yielded normal results, Vergara said.

"He is conscious, knows where he is and we are not finding any injury with long-term effects at this moment," said Vergara.

Noriega will remain in intensive care for 24 hours, he said.

Panama's National Police said earlier Sunday in a statement that the 77-year-old Noriega had possibly suffered a stroke. Police took him from El Renacer prison where he was serving out his sentence to Hospital Santo Tomas in Panama City.

One of his three daughters, Sandra, was seen entering the hospital, which was guarded by police agents.

In December, Panamanian authorities said Noriega was suffering from mobility due to a stroke several years ago. He had paralysis on his face's left side and leg.

Noriega, who ruled Panama from 1983 to 1989, spent about 20 years in U.S. and French prisons on drug-trafficking and money-laundering convictions, before returning to Panama on Dec. 11, 2011. Shortly after returning home under heavy security, he was seen publicly in a wheelchair being helped by prison authorities.

Noriega was Panama's longtime intelligence chief before becoming its top leader.

While he had been considered a valued CIA asset for years, the U.S. government soured on him, especially after a top political opponent was killed in 1985 and Noriega appeared to join forces with Latin American drug traffickers.

U.S. President George H.W. Bush ordered an invasion in December 1989 to oust him from power. He was captured and brought to Miami.

Prosecutors said Noriega helped the Medellin cocaine cartel ship "tons and tons of a deadly white powder" into the United States. But the defense said the indictment "smells all the way from here to Washington."

Jurors convicted him in April 1992 of eight of 10 charges. Under the judge's instructions, they were told not to consider the political side of the case, including whether the U.S. had the right to invade Panama and bring Noriega to trial in the first place.

When his 17-year sentence ended in 2007, France extradited him on money-laundering charges.

Noriega also had legal troubles awaiting him in Panama, where he had been convicted in absentia of murder, embezzlement and corruption charges that carried a combined 60-year prison sentence.

This is NOT the big news of what is happening currently in Panamá. It is the protests which seem to be headed toward a general uprising against the government. The InterAmerican Highway has been barricaded in several places by members of the Ngöbe upset about the lack of the president (and his ministers) keeping a verbal pledge made by the president last year promising that there would be NO mining on the Ngöbe lands. The Ngöbe also have sympathizers from other indigeneous groups, labor unions, students, church officials and farmers. The police have used force and have killed at least one protester (4 according to the US State Department's website). The people are not happy that their wishes are being ignored by the government officials intent on permitting foreign corporations mining permits in violation of the national Constitution. I find it not only surprising, but shocking that our news media (including this one) have said NOTHING about this. Makes me very suspicious that our media is being controlled by outside forces.

No. The REAL news is the protests in Panamá over government policy and its lying to the citizens there. Check out prensa.com and the Panama News for a taste of the real news. I have absolutely NO idea why it is that this is not being reported by the US news sources; it certainly is getting reported elsewhere in the world.

?? Don't read/speak Spanish, but from what I can garner the situation looks similar to that of Hugo of Ven. Class division on a huge scale resulting in two - rich & poor. It's near the same in Mexico and the U.S. is moving in the same direction.

Funny that George Bush Sr. who was the director of the CIA, worked with Noriega, I think that was when he had a war on drugs, where did that go? In fact, how did the CIA fund the black operations, they could not get approval for from congress?
Then when Noriega was about to spill his guts, what happened?
Sad part, our government is still funding the production of drugs, that filters into this country, why you may ask? They make money, there are users on the street, the police have a job, the lawyers are appointed, the courts get money, the hospitals, you name it, it is involved in some way, do I think werid, think about it, then tell me.

I agree. GWHB lost all my respect when he didn't resign the presidency and surrender himself to the AG for being an accomplice in the mess. Noriega was on our payroll (CIA's) for a long, long time; including when daddy Bush was Director of the Agency.

...the nurses should get the bugger up and make him run fast around the hospital complex dragging his pee bottle behind him...of course, this would all be in the interest of seeing how much it takes a dictator to have a stroke. coma, coma, c'mon manny!!!

A part of the reason for the invasion was he threatened to tell what he knew.

Yep, Noriega and Ollie North was in the drug smuggling trade. Guess who went to prison and who became a hero to Republicans.
Remember reading stories about Air America (CIA) smuggling drugs. When they caught the pilots, they said they were following orders from Col. North. Guess who went to prison and who didn't.
North became a millionaire. And not from his miltaity pay.

I wonder if "Pinapple's" involvement with the drug trade had anything to do with the Reagan/Pointdexter/ Negroponte/Ollie North Iran-Contra affair?
03:34 PM on 02/06/2012
Unfortunatey Noriega was an embarrassment to the US as he was a co conspiritor with LTC Ollie North in the Iran Contra scandal. The US invaded a soverign nation, kidnapped it's President, killed several innocent citizens along the way and rail roaded him in his trial. The whole invasion smelled as bad as the Bay of Pigs or Grenada, the US committing Armed Forces where we are not welcome. Is it any wonder that the US is hated in most of Latin America, except by the ruling class which we keep in power--------- or attempt to topple when they displease us.
