Tom Brady, Patriots Miss Chances In Super Bowl 2012

By HOWARD ULMAN   02/ 5/12 11:42 PM ET  AP

INDIANAPOLIS -- Tom Brady's two long incompletions in the final minutes, and several missed chances throughout the game cost the New England Patriots a chance at another Super Bowl victory.

It also resulted in their second loss to the New York Giants in the big game in four years, 21-17 on Sunday.

"We just came up a little bit short," Brady said. "There were some missed opportunities out there. It was a very hard-fought game. We fought `til the end. I'm very proud of that."

With just over four minutes left, Brady tossed a pass to the left side to a wide-open Wes Welker near the Giants 20-yard line. But Brady's most reliable receiver – and the NFL leader with 122 catches – couldn't hang on.

After the game, Welker sat at a podium and stared straight ahead. His eyes were red. His hands were folded in his lap.

He blamed himself.

"It comes to the biggest moment of my life, and (I) don't come up with it," Welker said. "Most critical situation, and I let the team down."

Minutes later, the Giants marched for the go-ahead touchdown with 57 seconds remaining.

But Brady had one last chance. He threw a desperation pass half the length of the field into the end zone. Aaron Hernandez went up among three defenders, and the ball was tipped – out of reach of a lunging Rob Gronkowski as the ball fell to the ground and time ran out.

"I felt like I was close," Gronkowski said. "But close isn't there."

Added Brady: "We got to the 50, and ran out of time."

There were plenty more wasted chances by a normally disciplined team that prides itself on not making mistakes.

"I thought we played very competitive, had our moments where we moved the ball and stopped them," coach Bill Belichick said. "We were in the lead for a good part of the game. We just came up a couple of plays short."

More than a couple.

The Patriots forced three fumbles, but the Giants kept the ball after each one.

"Those plays like that don't happen too often in a game and we didn't capitalize on the opportunities," wide receiver Deion Branch said.

The worst of those missed chances came when Brandon Spikes recovered a fumble by Victor Cruz with 4:14 left in the first quarter. But the Patriots were penalized for having 12 men on the field. That gave New York the ball at the New England 6.

Two plays later, Eli Manning hit Cruz for a 2-yard touchdown and a 9-0 lead.

Then Brady got hot, completing a Super Bowl-record 16 straight passes, and the Patriots surged to a 17-15 lead. They had a chance to make it a two-possession game when a mix-up on the Giants defense left Welker alone.

On a second-and-11 at the Patriots 44, the sure-handed receiver had a chance to score. All he had to do was catch the ball and, perhaps, make it to the end zone. Amazingly, the ball went off his hands.

"It's one of those plays I've made 1,000 times," he said.

But there were a lot more plays that cost the Patriots their fourth Super Bowl championship in 11 years.

"I think every guy in the locker room wishes they could have done a little more," Brady said.

Three fumbles but no turnover? Dumb luck?

I'm kind of looking forward to the return of Josh McDaniels...wondering what other Pats fans or serious, knowledgeable football people think about this.

(No snark please...I would appreciate no response rather than a mean one.)

Both teams fought all out and the game could easily have gone either way.

Losing to the Giants would be easier to take if:
- Eli Manning could stop blaming the receivers for his sometimes crappy throws. I blame the media as well, WHY can you not hold this guy accountable? Pathetic

- The Giants could knock off their fake injuries to give themselves a free time out.

Personally I think the MVP should have gone to the Giants punter, seriously he is the one who actually won this game for the Giants.

Law, Malloy, Harrison, Samuels. Pats haven't been the same since they had a strong secondary that could blitz. Now Bill loves LB's since his time with the Giants and the front is solid but until they upgrade the secondary so they can run those different look blitzes to bring the heat they are going to have a tough time winning another. Gronk being hurt was a bummer but you can't fault the rest of the offense for not performing. Tom and Chad didn't have enough chemistry for him to step up when they needed to changed offensive set with Gronk's injury. Forgive Gisele, she was just being a good wife, though I'm sure Tom is gonna have to take some grief from teammates and explain to Gisele American sports wives don't get to be so free with their opinions.

You left off the Giants pretending to be hurt when they need to give Eli Manning some time.

How many injured player time outs did the Giants need? You didn't see the Patriots pulling that kind of crap.

Since Monday's are for armchair quarterbacks, let's speculate on the importance of the game's first score, the safety the Giants received as a result of Brady intentionally grounding the ball from his end zone. If that doesn't happen, then the Pats' last possession is for a game-winning or tying FIELD GOAL, not a touchdown. How would that have changed the Pats' strategy as they drove for the Giants' 30 yard line instead of the Giants' end zone?

I hope Brady's wife doesn't read this. Being beaten about my head with 6-inch stilettos can't feel very good.

Pass to Welker was tipped I believe. Other Pats receivers did, however, drop passes that hit them in the hands.

I'm not a football expert, nor am I a pundit; however, I thought the gamewas great - could have gone either way. Yet, Brady's spouse would have done much better by staying out of the critique.

There were at least two blatant pass interference plays by the Pats that the refs let go. That's the breaks.

For this game, everyone says, a play here a play there means the game. Well you can say that for every play including the coin toss. If any play is different the out come will be different. That is why they play the game and do not rely on the fact sheets. You can say, if this guys misses a block, a tackle, a pass, a kick, a run back, the game is different. A penalty that was not called or was called and should not have been, changes the game.
You just cannot point to any play and say for sure, the game would have been different, every play counts, not just the obvious plays that seem to change a game.

Games that are not close on the scorboard are often said not to have been turned by one or two close plays. That's the difference.

My point is any play has the elements of being 'the play' or one of 'the plays'. Someone makes an open field tackle, if he does not, it goes for big yardage and could be 'the play'. In essence, every play is one of those 'plays'. It is nice for argument sake to pick a few plays that turn the game and if you look at every play and analyze it, a block made or miss turns any play into a turning play. If the coin toss goes to the Giants, the Pats get the ball first, it changes the entire game. Every play is now different and who knows what the out come is.

#1, there is no Guarantee that if Welker, had caught his last pass that it would have resulted in a touch down, it was not an end zone pass. #2 Welker, turned out ( as usual) a Concrete performance all night long, play after play, Quarter after Quarter. #3, Welker, is the work horse of the Pat's Offence. He was running holes in the Giant defence all night long. Welker, reminds me of a great baseball player by the Name of Cal Ripken Jr, Cal just kept his mouth shout and played ball, he holds the record today for most games played consecutively, He wasnt the most famous player in the world, but upon his retirement he got a standing ovation as a vsitor to another teams stadium the Orioles, will always remember his name. Welker is the same type of person. For the media to beat up on this man because of one missed pass that may or may not have resulted in a touch down is Ridiculous. And shamefull.#4 He will be back next year, and my guess is that he will be one of the tools that land the Patriots another Super Bowl.

A Welker catch would have allowed the patriots to run out the clock more and the giants would have most likely called their last time out. A catch there means the giants might not even get the ball again, or if they do it would have been with little time and no timeouts. The patriots did not need another TD to win the game. Another first down after the Welker catch would have allowed the patriots to run the clock down to zero(or very close to it). The reaction of the patriots players on the bench shows how big that drop was.

Thats the breaks, If you have played sports then you know that things like that happen. You win some you loose some, Welker , had a hell of a game and I would not be the first Hell of a game that he has had. There were other passes missed, on that drive, yet I dont see any other name's. Welker is the Patriots work horse. The defence is responcible for stopping the Giants touch downs. So, out of 500+ receptions, Welker , drops one. If the media and Welkers team mates are upset about the drop then maybe they can trade him for someone better. ( good luck).

As I stated on a different thread, Brady also owns a portion of the Welker drop. You could tell the pass to Welker was a poorly thrown ball by the way WW was twisting back to the outside (while running backwards) to get his hands on it. Should he have caught it? Absolutely. Could it have been thrown much better? Undoubtedly.

You know Cybolt, Welker has been on the receiving end of over 500, game winning receptions for the Pats. The Pats may have never even made the superbowl, without him.
I guess if they are really this upset then they can trade him, and then they can play against him. My guess is, He aint goin anywhere.

It was a very good Super Bowl. Both teams played great. It came down to the final minute. Who could ask for a better game? Both teams are full of talent and skill. I enjoyed it. Im a Patriot fan,I thought that Welker, and Woodhead had a very good game. Welker, is a very good ball player, year after year he puts in a solid performance ususally gaining yards after reception. He just keeps his mouth shut and plays ball.To have the press try to make him the "Norwood" of this Super Bowl, is dispicable. The game was a nail bitter to the end, a 1 point game in the fourth Quarter. Who could ask for a better performance?
03:30 PM on 02/06/2012
Yes, I agree with your comments about Welker. I am a Buffalo Bills fan and I do take exception to your implication and others feelings that Scott Norwood was a goat in the Super Bowl against the Giants. Scott was one of the best Field Goal kickers of his day, and he kept his mouth shut and went about doing his job (qualities you used to describe Welker). Scott missed one - Welker missed one. They are both very good players who missed one, and let's remember that Scotts field goal was not chip shot - it was over 40 yards out. Enough said.

Yeah, Norwood, was a great kicker, Had a bad day. It Happens. Welker's reception would have created a first down. But Didnt. There were others on that drive that completely missed the ball, I dont see their names. Welker, is the teams work horse, and a good one. I guess the media had to blame someone. I, am also a Jim Kelly, fan . Enjoyed watching him play, Got his, rookie card........Some where around here probably under something. Lol.
