Ashley Day Allegedly Tried To Run Down Bicycle Cops With Car To Avoid Ticket
A 25-year-old Chicago-area woman was charged Saturday after allegedly attempting to run down a bicycle police officer with her car after the officer signaled to pull her over.
Ashley Day, of Hazel Crest, Ill., caught the officer's attention after she allegedly made an illegal U-turn near the intersection of Randolph and Stetson in Chicago's Loop while talking on a cell phone Saturday afternoon, the Chicago Tribune reports.
When a bicycle officer tried to pull her over, Day allegedly put her car into reverse and nearly struck the officer. When a second bicycle officer also attempted to pull her over, the woman reportedly tried to run that officer down as well, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Day was taken into custody when she was finally stopped in the 100 block of North Lake Shore Drive, NBC Chicago reports. Her charges include two counts of felony aggravated assault while operating a motor vehicle against a police officer, the traffic violations and one count of misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude police. A judge set her bail at $10,000 Sunday.
Chicago police officers were also attacked in two other separate incidents over the weekend, Fox Chicago reports. Friday afternoon, Jenkins Cooper, charged with attempted murder and cannabis possession, allegedly shot at a police officer when the officer attempted to serve a search warrant of Cooper's South Side home. In the city's Lawndale neighborhood, Terry Jones allegedly shot out the back window of a marked police car.
No officers were hurt in any of the attacks.
