A mother of two from the inland Queensland town of Roma, Australia, died early Friday after sacrificing her life to save her son from the rushing floodwaters that devastated many areas of Queensland over the weekend and forced thousands of people from their homes, the Sunday Mail reports.

Jane Sheahan was driving with her 7-year-old son Darcy through the flooded streets of Roma Friday when fast-rising flood waters swept their vehicle off the road, according to the Sunday Mail.

Blair Humphries, a local father of four who ran out to help Sheahan, told the Sunday Mail that one man already at the scene tried to reach the pair with a ski rope and another staked out a telephone pole downstream in order to intercept the two if they were swept that way. Humphries and a third man then entered the water to try to help the mother and son back to safety.

In the meantime, Humphries said he was appalled to see a group of bystanders gathered at the scene with no intent to help, some of whom were videotaping the event on their camera phones.

By the time Humphries and his co-rescuer reached the pair, floodwaters had begun pulling them apart, and Sheahan realized only one could be saved.

"Save my son!" were the last words Sheahan said before she handed her son up to the men and was swept under the floodwaters, according to the Sunday Mail.

Sheahan's body was found later that afternoon under a bridge. The incident is the first recorded fatality resulting from the floods currently plaguing Queensland, according to the Australian Associated Press.

Investigators are still trying to figure out why Sheahan was driving on a flooded road, but her brother said it could not have been a reckless decision, refuting the accusation of one witness interviewed by the the Sunday Mail that his sister had ignored warnings from onlookers to get off the road.

"It's totally untrue ... It gives the members of the public the impression that she was irresponsible," Sheahan's brother John Simon told the Brisbane Times. "My sister would never have done anything like that, she would never ever risk her children in any way."

One local official said he believes Sheahan could have been driving sandbags to areas with rising floodwaters.

"The lady was helping others out. That's what people do out here," Federal MP for Maranoa Bruce Scott told the Sunday Mail. "She was actually in the process of carrying additional sandbags into the area where the floods were rising."

It's true we are not a people of standers-by but if you know the power of flood water you think twice before wading in, even to save another. That being said you'd have to tie me down to stop me trying to help. That you would record a mother and child in trouble (regardless of how they got there) before you try to help them says so much about you and the people who raised you. Feel shame if you have the capacity, but definately hope you never need help, karma has wicked skill when using irony.

It is written on the Anzac Memorial, "Heroism has no greater act than this, to give up your life for another." I paraphrase, hope you get the drift.
These people live in a harsh land (200 miles from me), and their great strength is they look out for each other.

From a survival point of view she screwed up. As it is there are now two motherless children. Had she saved herself there would not be a motherless child, let alone two, and she could maybe have been a mother of another child(ren). Logic not love.

Your logic is flawless, but I don't think any parent could save herself and leave her child.

They do, fairly often.

Wow I don't know what to say to that. Without question the most cold blooded response to tragedy I've read recently.

What a sad story. I must say that in our current times when all we hear on the news is stories about parents doing the unspeakable to their children, it reaffirms my belief in the human race to hear of this woman's sacrifice for her baby. May she rest in peace with the knowledge that she saved him.

How incredibly sad. May she rest in peace.

Man, I'm so glad that the son is ok. Thank goodness for Humphries and the other people who helped out.

How can the brother say she would never have done that, when thats exactly what she did? typical woman trying to drive through flood waters, causing others to risk their lives to try and save her and her son. as for the onlookers not helping, why should they go into the floodwaters and drown like her? thats lame.

It say's that the people there help out one another... well someone forgot to let that small crowd know this. How could they watch and not help.. she might be alive today. I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

They cared more about taping this woman fighting for her child, and her own life, then to go help. I hope they all end up in h ell.

And able bodied people stood around recording it on their phones! reminds me of when I was 14 and a woman knocked on my door asking help to find her 18 month old son. Two friends, 16 and 17 years old arrived at that time and we three went to a deep hole in the nearby creek. We waded the pool and found the boy. bob passed him to Butch who passed him to me - we passed him to a fireman, but it was too late. I will never forget the dozen or more cops and firemen standing around while we kids waded in the water - so sorry for her to have had to sacrifice like that.

There's only so much room in a pool of water.

...I feel for this family, on the other hand if she was delivering sandbags she should not have had her son in the car with her under ANY circumstances. imho

This is the first article of a mom saving their child, unlike drowning them. May she rest in peace

If I knew I was going to die trying to save somebody I would not do it. Sorry, nobody will love my son like I DO. And he needs ME alive. So people can say all they want about the bystanders but they must have judged it would cost thier lives. But i WOULD die for my son if it were me or him. NEVER if it were me or you.

I would if it were a child. I couldn't live with myself if I watched a child die and I did nothing. All children are worth that to me.
