Cee Lo Green: 'F*ck You' Meaning Explained
Cee Lo Green has finally named the targets of his hit song "Fuck You," and their identity may surprise you.
The song is written like an angry note from a spurned lover, but as Green tells Esquire, it's actually a metaphorical shot fired by an overlooked artist.
"I'd been recording for three years and I had over seventy songs, and I was ready to be heard," he said. "But my label was just sitting on it, and it was very disheartening, not knowing if what I was doing was good enough. It seemed like I couldn't please anybody. So of course, figuratively, I was like, 'You don't you like me? Well fuck you!' It was very cathartic."
The track went on to become the most popular of his career, surpassing even "Crazy," the hit single he recorded with DJ Danger Mouse under the name Gnarls Barkley. "Fuck You" was Time Magazine's No. 1 song of 2010; won a Grammy and was nominated for two others; and has sold more than 5 million digital copies.
