Dustin McCombs, Accused Rapist, Uses Facebook To Taunt Sheriff's Department, Gets Self Caught

Accused rapist Dustin McCombs took to Facebook to try to convince police that he wasn't guilty.

That's what he told the Jefferson County, AL, Sheriff's Office Facebook page after they shared a "Wanted" picture and description of 21-year-old McCombs in an album titled "Creep of the Week".

A warrant was put out for McCombs' arrest on January 5. He apparently had several other misdemeanor warrants as well. What the sheriff's department were likely hoping for was to get some leads as to the fugitive's whereabouts — but instead they made direct contact.

"And good thing I moved out of state," read McCombs' first Facebook comment under the photo police shared with his "Wanted" description.

McCombs's response ignited a two-hour comment war between McCombs, Facebook users, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Facebook administrator.

Though the conversation has since been removed, the website BuzzFeed featured screenshots of the conversation in its report.

LOOK:

"Doesn't matter where you moved the warrant calls for nationwide extradition. You will be brought back to Alabama to stand trial. Please turn yourself in and spare yourself all that trouble. It will be easier on you and your family," wrote the administrator.

"You guys can just hold your horses," McCombs replied.

The administrator offered to take the conversation off of Facebook, but McCombs declined. "[O]n here is just fine," read his response. However, his tone eventually shifted from defiance to concession.

"Can I turn myself in to St. Clair County since thats where the warrant is, I hear it's nicer over there," asked McCombs in another Facebook comment. He then persisted with questions, including the specifics of misdemeanor warrants and whether he could retain a court date without surrendering. He even expressed worry that his character had been "defamed" by the "Creep of the Week" association.

Other users also engaged with McCombs.

"You know they are going to knock on your brother's door, your parents', etc., until they find you," warned one commenter, to whom McCombs wrote, "Funny part about them knocking on all of their doors is none of them know where I am. And yes I'm going to turn myself in, when I'm ready, are you going to post my 60K bond?"

The Sheriff's department quickly chimed in, "Dustin, be quiet. Do not talk about the case here."

McCombs naive use of Facebook eventually led to his arrest.

"The person featured in the Creep of the Week album this week, Dustin McCombs, was captured in Ohio today by the U. S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. He will be returned to Alabama to face the charges against him. He remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law," Jefferson County Sheriff's department posted on its Facebook page Friday, February 3.

"Thanks for having this page JCSO - wish the Birmingham PD would update their FB pages and keep us as informed as you do," posted one commenter.

"This is a pretty silly-acting individual to be facing such a serious charge," Chief Deputy Randy Christian told Alabama Live. " Of course we are happy to let him know that, yes, we can catch you, but more than anything we are happy that maybe his victim is a step closer to getting justice."

We already know law enforcement agencies troll social websites to find wanted criminals and to prevent crimes. In late January, two 20-somethings arriving from the U.K. were deported before getting through customs for one's tweets about "destroying America."

Other have used social media to their advantage while hunting for lost items. For example, a man recently located his stolen laptop hundreds of miles away by using a tracking program and the help of Twitter users.

The police have already made their own case harder by publicly slandering a "presumed innocent" man and trying to influence public opinion by referring to "his victim" needing "justice." The police have convicted him and are now actively trying to prejudice public opinion to get a conviction..guilty or not! Most people posting here also seem to have decided he's guilty without knowing anything about the case itself. Google "Greg Kelly". Just saying, there's been no trial or evidence seen yet...so do we, in this country, reeeeeally hold to "innocent until proven guilty"? And if he does turn out to be innocent, are the cops going to do anything to counteract the effects of their public slander?

Thats awsome. What a moron. "Good thing I moved out of state" are you kidding me? If hes guilty of rape then I hope his fellow inmates return the favor. I also believe the cops are flat out wrong for posting pics under creep of the week. He has not been convicted of anything so for the cops to post that they are clearly wrong. I realize the cops cant be bothered with the law and due process. Yet another reason to dislike the police. Its just like posting pictures of people arrested of drunk driving and prostitution BEFORE they are ever convicted. Its wrong and it will eventually bite them in the behind.

Maybe it shouldn't have been posted on Creep of the Week, but they DEFINATELY should have posted his picture, so he could be identified and caught.

Only trouble is,. the police have already prejudiced the public against him and proven THEY have already decided he's guilty. "Creep of the Week"...if they really "presume he's innocent" then why is he a creep? And the police have already decided he has a victim...again, if he's presumed innocent, he doesn't have a 'victim.' The police have already convicted him and now they're trying to convince the public he's guilty without a trial.

His fellow rapists. Duh! Just kidding. I find it a waste of time to question the intelligence of most people on FB.

Who are the morons/monsters who "liked" his posts? Seriously, which 13 people knowingly cheer on an accused rapist?
10:05 AM on 02/08/2012
Funny, how that word "accused" get's ignored. He's innocent until proven otherwise.

I agree with you totally. A good lawyer will eat that police dept for lunch in the courtroom. You cant label someone creep and then list that they are wanted for rape. The cops have already convicted him in the court of public opinion. There is definitely something wrong with the police posting their most wanted pics under "creeps of the week". I am not saying this guy is innocent but how would you like it if the police called you "rapist of the week" with a nice big picture when you had done nothing wrong? Thats essentially what they called him they just used the word creep. Thats garbage and is illegal. Its called defamation and again a lawyer will win in court easily I might add.

Yes they can but so can an entire police department as well. It is illegal to post pics of most wanted and label them creeps. That is clearly illegal and I hope someone takes them to task for it. Not this guy though, unless hes innocent. I know if it was me being accused and I was innocent I would be furious and sue the pants off this police dept.

It is not illegal to post pictures of wanted persons and list what they are wanted for.

Another dumbest criminal in America. He will be Bubba's cellie and folks know how rapists are treated in the graybar hotel.
