Miramonte School Closing For 2 Days Over Double Teacher Arrests; Parents Protest (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

ROBERT JABLON   02/ 6/12 11:28 PM ET  AP

LOS ANGELES — The entire faculty at an elementary school where two teachers were arrested on suspicion of lewd conduct will be removed while the school district investigates, the Los Angeles school superintendent told parents Monday.

Superintendent John Deasy told parents and media on Monday night that the Miramonte Elementary School staffers are being replaced because a full investigation of allegations is disruptive and staffers require support to get through the scandal, too.

An entire staff has been trained to come into classrooms at Miramonte to take over teaching for the time being, and there will be a psychiatric social worker in every classroom to help students and staff cope with any issues.

"The last thing I'm worried about is a budget issue," Deasy said. "The Number One thing I'm worried about is the students."

School officials canceled classes at the school on Tuesday and Wednesday as a cooling-off period, said district spokesman Tom Waldman.

Deasy emphasized that all staff members being brought into the classroom went through a "very rigorous screening process."

Maria Jimenez, 51, said the parents whose children are enrolled at Miramonte are divided over the move.

"Some are in favor. Others are against it because they did this without advising us or consulting us," Jimenez said.

The move follows the arrest of two Miramonte teachers: Mark Berndt was charged last week with committing lewd acts on 23 children, while Martin Springer was arrested Friday on suspicion of fondling two girls in his classroom.

More than a quarter of the students at Miramonte were absent from school Monday while parents demanded more protection at the school, with attendance reaching just 72 percent, according to figures from the Los Angeles Unified School District.

About three dozen parents and supporters protested in front of the main doors of the school earlier Monday, some carrying a banner that read, "We the parents demand our children be protected from lewd teacher acts."

The protest was an unusual event in the poor, overwhelmingly Latino neighborhood, where many parents and students struggle with the English language.

Many people finally gathered around former state senator-turned-lawyer Martha Escutia, who lectured them in Spanish about how to organize for the media and suggested a catchy name for their fledgling movement: Mothers of Miramonte.

As night fell, about 100 angry parents marched from the elementary school to the nearby meeting with administrators.

School police watched and sheriff's deputies were on hand, but there was no violence.

Berndt, who worked at the school for 32 years, was charged with committing lewd acts on 23 children, ages 6 to 10, between 2005 and 2010.

The acts cited by authorities include blindfolding children and feeding them his own semen in his classroom in what children were allegedly told was a tasting game.

Berndt, 61, remains jailed on $23 million bail and could face life in prison if convicted.

Springer, 49, was arrested on suspicion of fondling two girls in his classroom. He was being held on $2 million bail.

Springer taught at Miramonte for his entire career, which started in 1986, the district said. He taught second grade.

The school board is scheduled to discuss firing him in a closed-door meeting Tuesday.

Investigators said they know of no connection between the Miramonte cases. Berndt and Springer know each other and took their classes on at least two joint field trips in the past decade, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The district set up a toll-free hotline on Monday to receive reports of suspected abuse at Miramonte, said school board President Monica Garcia in a statement.

Garcia added that the district would step up efforts to ensure students and staff realized the importance of reporting misconduct.

In the same school district, a janitor at a San Fernando Valley elementary school was arrested on suspicion of committing a lewd act with a child on a campus.

Paul Adame, 37, was taken into custody after a mother told police on Sunday that he had inappropriate contact with her child during school hours Friday at Germain Elementary School in the Chatsworth area north of Los Angeles, police Capt. Kris Pitcher said at a news conference.

The captain declined to provide details but urged anyone who might know of other possible victims to contact police.

Adame was booked and released on $100,000 bail Monday. It could not be immediately determined if he had an attorney.

There was no immediate connection between the arrest of the janitor and the cases at Miramonte, which is 15 miles away in an unincorporated county area of South Los Angeles.

Here's two separate of how out of touch school officials and the teachers unions are. This is what we are paying for.

Maybe it's time the Huffington Post did to do a good story on the overblown salaries of teacher union officials.

I'm going to weigh in on this a little bit. The problem seems to be that we expect that people in position of trust and authority are proving not to be trust worthy, and abusing their authority more and more. We need to raise the bar for those that are put in a position like teacher, police, doctors, dentists, clergy, TSA, immigration, nurses, political representatives that if they break the law or moral codes that they are entrusted to uphold, that they will face a harsher set of penalties than even the general public. Can we all agree that something needs to change and NOW.

Obsessed are we? There are many positive aspects to both. To focus solely on the negative and generalize is unfair and myopic.

The Parents are right. This same group of administrators that certified these two deviates is now going to send a new crew in that may or may not be different from the last group. The incompetance is unbelievable.

Why are illegals being allowed in our school systems? If the children cant even speak the language you KNOW they are illegal. Why is this being allowed? I understand the issue at hand...but THis wouldnt have even happened if these children were not allowed into the school in the first place. Now the illegals will sue the school district (as well they should) and win TONS of money ( as well they should) and it ALLLL SHOULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED.

i think the parents of california school children pull their kids out of school and demand that these stupid teacher unions do away with tenure and every teacher in our country be fired and replaced with young teachers looking to work and serve their districts. the system is so full of corruption that only a major shake up will have even a snowball/s chance in &^%% in being corrected.

Oh, lets's take a deep breath and think rationally. All teachers are not responsible for the sick, criminal actions of a few. Most teachers are dedicated professionals who are committed to a noble task and are just as appalled as anyone else (or more so because the guilty have disgraced the ideals of the profession and harmed those they were hired to and morally responsible, to protect). Tenure and unions for the most part serve to protect the rights, working conditions and contractual terms of employees, not to protect guilty, ineffective teachers. Teachers don't want colleagues not dedicated to the job. It makes their jobs more difficult. If a 5th grade teacher is awful, the next year the 6th grade teacher has to deal with the consequences of it. As far as replacing all teachers in the country...there aren't enough to do it with. Additionally, less than half of all new teachers last the first year in the profession. Far less than 30% make it to 3 years. In this day and age, would you want the responsibility?
It takes a team of students, parents, staff, administrators, district supervisors and community partners to make it work...and make it fail. The responsibility and accountability for success is shared. So is the blame.

Panic shouldn't replace reason. How do you turn over the whole staff of
a school in two days? I think that this is a case where the school is
reacting badly to a situation that is going to cost the students dearly.
However, we must always remember that the protection/comfort of
the teacher/staff is paramount.

firing all of these teachers and hiring new ones isn't going to fix the budget either your still going to have to hire more teachers probabaly the same amount and some may even demand a higher pay then the ones who are working now i think this school district is making a very story and costly mistake ...Don't Like What I Have To Say?..... Don't Care 2 of 2 comments

This is so wrong....Why remove so many caring and wonderful teachers on the actions of two bad ones? At least you & the parents all know all of these teachers and they can't talk to the teachers alot easier and who says bringing in all new teachers how do you know your not gonna get 4 dirty teachers this time? You don't know the teachers your bringing in while you know these teachers who have been there for years...Like i said don't punish these teachers based on two those bad ones they probabaly love their job and their kids and besides removing these teachers and bringing in brand new ones in the middle of the school teachers might made some kids clam up and i know my little girl doesn't like change and if all the sudden her teachers changed in the middle of the year she'd be really upset and i'd worry about her not being so good in school.....They need to start a petition or something to keep these kids in school i know i would fight to keep these teachers in the school it's not fair to them or to the students at all...1 of 2 comments

What in the world is John Deasy thinking. He's removing the entire staff of the school. He's not concerned about the budget. He's going to have a counselor in every counselor with new teachers. Where are these teachers coming from. No one can hire that many highly qualified teachers and have them trained for this type of tragedy overnight. He's punishing every child at that school for this disgusting teacher's actions. What a disgusting way to handle this situation. Those teachers that are innocent are being treated so unfairly. They've also gone through a horrific situation. John Deasy is showing his lack of leadership skills and showing how a terrible situation can be made even worse. Just two or three weeks ago, John Deasy was saying that anymore cuts would leave LAUSC in a position that would make it impossible to provide a quality education. Now, he finds enough money to replace at least 30-40 teachers, custodians, office staff, cafeteria workers, administration and supervision staff. We're talking millions of dollars here. Where did he find that money?

How can they prove he fed the kids semen, did I miss something? That would be very hard to prove unless he was caught on hidden Camera or an eye witness saw him making preparations.

Second question, they said this was a "Latino neighborhood, where many parents and students struggle with the English language." Hey, I'm struggling with paying my taxes to support these people. If they can't speak English how do they hold a job, and how did they become citizens? My guess is we taxpayers are supporting and paying for the education of Mexican citizens. Send the bill to Mexico, and if they won't pay it send back the residents of this "Latino neighborhood, where many parents and students struggle with the English language." They won't have to struggle with the language back in their home country then, will they !

In no way do I condone the actions of people who abuse children, but how is this legal?

Would also be interested in their "...very rigorous screening process." for the replacement staff. Given the time span to accomplish this task I'm sure it wasn't more than a phone tree asking whether or not they were available for an extended time within the next week.
