Many With Only High School Diploma Laid Off During Weak Recovery

Jobless Recovery

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 7/2012 5:13 pm Updated: 02/ 9/2012 12:08 pm

For many in the United States, the two years since the end of the recession have been worse than the downturn itself.

Among those Americans with only a high school diploma who have lost a job since 2007, a third became unemployed after the official end of the recession, according to The Washington Post.

It's a troubling statistic in its own right -- job seekers without a college degree are having serious difficulty finding work in the current market, and the unemployment rate for high school graduates is more than twice that of college grads -- but it also underscores the fact that, for many Americans, the recovery hasn't felt very different from the recession that preceded it.

Economists consider the Great Recession to have ended in the summer of 2009, nearly three years ago. That's the point when the economy stopped outright shrinking and began growing again. But the subsequent period of modest expansion has been marked by job cuts, uncertainty and a gradual erosion of financial security for many Americans. These conditions are expected to remain pronounced for a long time to come.

U.S. employers cut 529,973 jobs in 2010, according to the outplacement company Challenger, Gray & Christmas. In 2011, that number rose to 606,082. At the same time, wages and benefits barely grew, with the high jobless rate giving employers little incentive to pay workers more. Today, there are still nearly 13 million Americans looking for work.

It's not that life has gotten much better for those with a job either. All together, median household incomes have now fallen more in the recovery than they did during the recession.

Meanwhile, as many as 49 million Americans live in poverty -- a record high -- and almost half the households in the country lack the kind of savings necessary to weather a financial emergency.

People without a college degree are having a particularly difficult time finding work, but they're not the only demographic hard hit by the crisis. The unemployment rate among very recent college graduates is well above the national average. While Baby Boomers account for a huge percentage of the long-term unemployed. And African-Americans have a jobless rate of 13.6 percent -- more than five percentage points above the national level.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this post mistakenly referred to a high school graduation certificate as a degree.

We live in strange times...its hard to say to one what skill is smart to pursue. Theres alot of preasures and pros/cons to everything. Quite a few legitimate college degrees one could pursue but the starting salaries for careers suck. its easy even if theres a job to be had upon graduation that you can put more into paying for college than you will make. Like say you could spend $100,000 to get a degree in Aviation...and jobs for airlines are available but Continental was offering $18,000 for starting Piolets. Thats about as much as I'd expect the flight attendants make.

Legal services can be outsourced. Hell they say they can take x-rays today and outsource them. A doctor in China can be emailed the x-ray and diagnose you. Of course something like Surgery has to be performed in the present...but who knows looking at a picture or x-ray or analyzing data or something can be done from anywhere. These are bizzare and challenging times. And unless its something physical and tangible its bound to be outsourced.

We may not be far off from a world where we don't even send our kids to school...they might attend a virtual school online or turn on the TV or something. Imagine you could have one person do that instead of employing thousands of teachers. Who knows what the future holds really or whats possible.

Cuba has free education, but what good is it, if you can't write what you think, or read what you like, if you do, you are put in jail or a bullet meets your brain. Way are some of you looking for something for free, sounds like you're waiting for government MOSSES to save you. Take those skills you have and start your own business, I did,, it's slow, but it beats working for someone else. When you find something you enjoy doing, you'll never work a day in your life.

There are tents cities in major cities in this country and they have been for sometime now, even before the Occupy Wallstreet Protesters started prptesting. Cities like Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Chicago, and St Louis, just to name a few have whle families living in tents and the numbers are growin.g Why does the mainstream media not show this?. In the city of Los Angeles alone there are over 4 million homeless people and 1 million of them are children.

So my husband at 52 years old who has worked manufacturing is sunk? Where in our society is this fair? he has worked his whole life , has paid ss has paid income taxes and he was let go by an employer who was tightening the purse strings and he has had maybe 5 interviews since june. Why on gods earth would they approve people for homes using the GROSS INCOME when you have minus from GROSS income insurance, income tac, ss, and medicare. That is why we are all hurtung and losing our homes. In 1991 i bought a home in hollywood ,fl i was approved on my NET income. itwas 25% of my net. I had 3 children and a broken ankle and never even came close to losing my home. this is a crying shame to take our jobs and approve homes we can never afford.

We've reached a point in society where many of the "good" jobs with annual salary and benefits now require a Bachelor's degree. Some application requirements will even state "Bachelor's required, Master's preferred."

The Bachelor's degree is the new high school diploma, the Master's degree is the new Bachelor's degree. Only having a high school diploma in today's economy is probably the equivalent of saying "high school dropout" 30 years ago.

Society will not go backwards, the best way to help increase the number of jobs in the country may be bring back the manufacturing jobs.

NOT JUST THAT...YOU MUST GET INTO A CAREER WHERE THERE WILL ALWAYS BE JOBS....I WOKE UP A LONG TIME AGO. WHEN I GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE WITH THE HOPES OF BEING AN ANCHORWOMAN OR A NEWSWOMAN I WAS SADLY MISTAKEN. MY DEGREE IN COMMUNICATIONS/MEDIA DID NOT HELP ME FIND A JOB IN THE FIELD. I HAD TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND REACH FOR A MASTERS DEGREE IN A FIELD THAT HAD MORE JOBS AND JOB SECURITY. I ATTAINED TWO MASTERS AND I AM WORKING ON MY PHD AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY. IN AN ECONOMY LIKE THIS I AM CALLED FOR SEVERAL JOBS AT A TIME THAT PAYS WELL OVER 70K PER YEAR. I AM GLAD I WOKE UP EARLY .....

Highest level of poverty in the industrial world.

And the righties want to blame O for it.

That's like keeping your money in a bank that gets robbed by Bonnie and Clyde, and then blaming the guy who comes in to clean up for the theft.

Bush stole our economy.

What we need is a tough marshall to go out and round up the bad guys now.

In our country, nobody gets to be a "tough marshall" all on his own. Any marshall needs a strong Congress behind him or nothing gets done.

If he hired William K. Black, the guy who put over 1500 bankers in jail for the savings and loan scandals under bush 1, we'd see some serious justice, and congress doesn't get to say boo about it.

With two wars off the books paid for with money borrowed from China, and then his tax cuts for the wealthy on top of his ownership society mortgage bubble based on record low FED rates and unregulated lending, Bush's economic policy is like getting Ebola.

You can't be standing there bleedingout and blame the doctor for not fixing it.

You gotta find the guy that caused the infection in the first place.

This is interesting since 60% of all new jobs being created are being filled by Mexicans who probably have not graduated from high school. Hilda Solis really IS doing her job then..............LMAO.

Exactly....people need to understand, today's business's are out for profits.....profits and hiring illegals is the new black. I'm looking for a damned second job and just about every single one I see is wanting bilingual speech as part of the new resume'...seriously???

Only in America, pal, only in America!!

Wanting someone who is bilingual is not the same as hiring illegals.

And the unemployment rate for people who are of Hispanic background is 50% higher than that of people who are white. And the unemployment rate for those who are foreign born is a couple of percentage points higher than that of people who are native born.

So it is not as though foreign-born Hispanics are taking all of the jobs from white native-born people. The statistics don't bear that out.

Boy, do I turn the figures sideways, or what?

Lost my job in '07. Took almost 2 years to find another. HS diploma, no college, 58 years old. Now at 61 retire in 4 years with a good pension on top of SS, nearly free medical, house paid for and money in the bank. That's after being nearly completely broke by the end of '08

Older people such as myself might be in bad shape if they didn't prepare properly when younger. I bring up my situation to point out that not everyone needs a degree. If you're not college material go learn a trade. Trade skills will always be in demand and salaries are good. Sometimes very good.

Being good at a trade and having a strong work ethic will carry you a long way. Just never stop learning and never stop exploring new roads. You can lose your house, your money, family, friends, etc. The only thing they can't take away is what you know and how well you do what you do.

Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, Michael Dell, etc don't have college degrees.

There is more than one way to be successful. The trick is ...find what you are good at and apply some passion and hard work.....and success is guaranteed.

If college wasn't so darn expensive then maybe more people would be educated. Student loans, grants and scholarships are drying up, people can't find jobs, employers won't hire some people unless they're already employed...it's a vicious cycle. And our snobbish government doesn't consider people with certificates in trades as well as AA Degrees to educated, so what does that tell you? All of the people I know with marketable trades are working and making nice salaries. However, the ones who have a wall full of degrees are having a tough time. Go figure.

Oh my goodness, I taught at the university level for a time, and those kids couldn't even formulate a short paragraph. In my current career, I interview some of our college graduates and it's just sad. Give me someone who is mature and has experience any day of the week over some of those young people.

If people have been accepted into college, then they are "educated." They might not have completed with a degree, but that doesn't mean that they lose all of their marbles just because they didn't. Are you saying that high school graduates do not qualify as "educated" persons? How about those new graduates on their way to Harvard or M.I.T?

I'm not sure what you mean. What do you consider a "marketable trade"? And what does the government have to do with this? And what kind of degrees do the people who are having a tough time have? Recent degrees or are these older people?

Almost every report about marketable college educated people, does not make mention of people with certificates in a trade nor people with AA Degrees. Look it up. I have friends and family who are cosmetologists, make-up artists, electricians, plumbers, chefs, dental hygienists, etc. who are working steadily. I also have friends and family, if they aren't employed, having the hardest time finding jobs because the jobs want are few and far in between and the ones that they could possibly get have been leery about hiring them because they feel that they're overqualified. I hear it from them and even acquaintances. You're damned if you have higher education in some fields and damned if you don't. Now HR friends of mine have been telling people to dumbdown that resume because it may work against them.

Do you really think the Repubs could have done better? If so, on what do you base your opinion?
09:16 PM on 02/08/2012
A republican president would not have broken spending records within the first year of his or her term. He was elected and started spending, which has not proven to have been effective in getting us out of this bad economy, in fact, it has probably delayed the recovery from the recession. Most recessions last on the average of 11-22 months. We have been in this one for years and are very close to double-dipping...
